Me too.

@DuncinToffee

Cresring?

So they are not all pro Trump, and?

Typo and should of said creating

Point being on this thread people attending these protests have been labelled trump supporters doing what trump said, im just pointing out that not every protester is. Those turning up on inauguration day aren't either

Interesting piece, with lots of footage, on a policeman wearing a MAGA hat and co-ordinating with the crowd.

He's a registered Democrat, and by gaining some of mob-leaders' support he successfully extracted his police colleagues from where they being physically attacked.

He's been suspended pending investigation, so we'll see what comes out in the wash.

One of the most interesting things about the Boogaloo Bois is how they use meme humour, particularly silly humour, in their messaging and recruitment, even though they literally want a war. That's also why they wear Hawaiian shirts.

It's like Trump and his plausible deniability - 'I was only joking!'

DGRossetti · 18/01/2021 12:27

If that is police misdirection and it worked, it rather holes the notion that these protesters were in any way "organised".

The very first thing you do if you are seriously organised for violence and protests is ensure the integrity of your unit. Or so the more active members of the Student Union were advising in the 1980s. It took more than a policeman in a "FUCK THE POLICE" T-Shirt to fool them.

I'm a little wary of the efforts to paint a picture suggesting that every other person is some sort of MAGA ninja. They play far too well into a drive to get people to happily give up their liberties.

pointythings · 18/01/2021 12:28

cycling you're doing it again... So some of those planning demonstrations aren't necessarily Trump supporters (though they are unpleasant right wing racist people). Fact is, the vast, vast majority of those planning demonstrations or worse are Trump supporters. Same with events on the 6th - a tiny fraction of a percentage were not right wing Trump supporters, but the vast, vast majority were. We get it. You can stop being so persnickety now. Can we please now get on with expressing ourselves without being pulled up on minuscule and insignificant details?

BelfastBloke Something I saw a lot when dealing with workplace bullies too. The "only having a laugh" brigade, very clever with it, despite nearly killing new young colleagues.
DuncinToffee · 18/01/2021 12:48

That police officer did the right thing, he got his colleagues out safely, even if it turns out he is a Trump supporter.

Surreal thought of the day

Sirhan Sirhan is younger than Joe Biden

www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/uk/donald-trumps-menace-and-hunger-for-affirmation-a-dangerous-recipe-comey-39977509.html

"Donald Trump’s constant need for affirmation makes the next few days a dangerous time in the United States, former FBI director James Comey has warned.

Mr Comey, who was fired by Mr Trump in 2017, called the outgoing President a “demagogue” who has a “menace” to him in private similar to that of a mob boss."

Demagogue is my husband's favourite term for Trump. Mine are more base.

Until a few months ago he thought my interest it what Trump did was odd. Now he sees just how dangerous the man is and rants more than I do.

How do you know a tiny fraction were not trump supporters? Or are you just using what you see in the media as you main evidence where your told they are all trump supporters.

You don't know the percentage.

Either way peolle post on here making statements that its ALL trump supporters. I'm just pointing out it isn't true to say that and why.

Is their an issue with correcting misinformation?

JamieLeeCurtains · 18/01/2021 13:05

@knittingaddict, I think a lot of people have only recently realised who and what Trump is and what he's done.

pointythings · 18/01/2021 13:08

Okaaaaay... So now we've reached 'lamestream media' level. Do I believe the reporting about the 6th and about the nature of Trump supporters? Yes, for the most part. These are people who have a social media trail a mile wide, so there's corroborating evidence aplenty. Some have been turned in by their own families.

Do you believe that they were plants from Antifa and BLM, cycling? Put there to make Trump and his people look bad? That would be a conspiracy.

The percentages are irrelevant in this, unless you believe what I've just suggested may be your position.

What you're doing isn't correcting misinformation, because nobody on here has claimed

  • That Joe Biden is perfect
  • That the people storming the Capitol were 100% Trump supporters
  • That those planning demonstrations or worse for Wednesday are 100% Trump supporters

Your method of debating is to set up a straw man and burn it down. We're not buying it.

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2021 13:09

That reminds me, the poster with the qanon partner, I really hope she is ok.
I am sorry that I can't remember her username.

Wow on that BBC footage with the Capitol police officer. If he went through all that wearing a MAGA hat and gaining the trust of rioters,he deserves a medal, because he got his fellow officers out of a very sticky situation.
Stupid woman hugging them all... they were only there and in danger because of her and the likes of her.

DGR I strongly got the impression of there being some organised groups and organisers, but the mob they'd been able to round up being partly composed of vegan shamans, Elizabeth from Knoxville and all-purpose conspiraloons. And indeed some of the organisers may have been people like that, too. So even the more militarised organisers ended up cat herding – hence the limited success.

But that's just my impression: I'll wait for the real analysis anon.

I've always wondered - does anyone actually say 'tom-mah-toes'? Because if not, you can't say that. Just correcting misinformation.

This. Absolutely this.

I thought much the same when whichever far-right group it was promoted a version of the "OK" hand gesture as a self-identifier for white supremacists.

When spotted, they claimed, "Oooh, it was just ironic, a joke on lefties to see if they'd fall for this being a thing." Meanwhile their followers really did adopt the hand signal.

Win win for the white supremacists. Got their little code for their in-group to bond, while mocking anyone who called them out on it.

Roussette · 18/01/2021 13:29

This article confirms what we all know - the huge majority of rioters were Trump supporters, and what is shocking is, it was at grassroots level they were told to take America back and occupy the Goernment by Repub lawmakers, elected officials, state senators, school boards, mayors, town councillors and sheriffs from 18 states.

They organised buses, made speeches, live streamed, shared contact information and coralled these people to make 6th Jan happen.

A shocking read

Pointythings I say "tom-ah-toes" but I also say "pot-ay-toes".
This confuses both left and right.
I blame my anarcho-syndicalist roots.
