This is very long but worth a read. It pulls together how the movements developed, how they fit together, what they want and how they justify getting it.

He was there on Jan 6th, and also was at the Million MAGA March, the Michigan vote count, and various other events of the same ilk.

Many of the incidents and protests detailed in the report were posted and discussed on these threads at the time but to see it all set out and described in such detail in one account is truly horrifying.

Well worth the time to read it.

To quote DH (US born and bred) "The US is fucked."

Thanks for that link ZZ. Horrifying and enlightening in equal measure.

@pointythings

If you read the actual article about the Boogaloo Boys, you will see that they oppose lockdown, support gun ownership and are extreme libertarians. While it is true that BLM seems to have divided the group, overall they could reasonably be described as far right.
If you also read up more about the Boogaloo movement and how its being used today its not reasonable to say it can be described as far right.

They are anti government and about race wars.

pointythings · 18/01/2021 10:07

Race wars = far right.
The first para of the article you've linked to describes them as 'right-wing extremist'.

Being anti-government does not make you not right wing. Extreme libertarianism = right wing.

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2021 10:09

Did you read the BBC article?

This relatively new anti-government subculture is perhaps the most dangerous of the bunch. Steven Carrillo, a 32-year-old US Air Force sergeant from California, has been charged with the murder of two officers during the George Floyd protests, one in Oakland and another in Santa Cruz.

Peaceful protesters they are not.

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2021 10:11

And from USA today

But there are various facets to the loosely organized group: One generally stems from its original ties to neo-Nazis and white supremacists, while a newer facet is libertarian.

"There's a lot of overlap and the boundary is blurry because they both evolved together," said Alex Newhouse, digital research lead at Middlebury Institute's Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism. "It is very difficult to know if the 'boogaloo boi' you see standing in the middle of the street at a protest is there in solidarity or to incite violence."

TheNorthWestPawsage · 18/01/2021 10:20

The New Yorker article linked to by ZZTopGuitarSolo late yesterday clearly and concisely describes several of the more organised groups who are protesting in the US. For the most part, they are not currently "united" and it seems to be their own version of serendipity that they have all come together under Trump.

However there is no dispute that each and every one of these groups wishes ill will on at least one other section of the US population. They are not there for the good of "the people".

www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/biden-keystone-xl-1.5877038

'U.S. president-elect Joe Biden has indicated plans to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline permit via executive action on his first day in office, sources confirmed to CBC News on Sunday.

A purported briefing note from the Biden transition team mentioning the plan was widely circulated over the weekend after being shared by the incoming president's team with U.S. stakeholders.

The words "Rescind Keystone XL pipeline permit" appear on a list of executive actions supposedly scheduled for Day 1 of Biden's presidency. '

Several lawyers commented last year that contracts made in the open knowledge of a possible change in material circumstances (i.e. a change of administration) are difficult if not impossible to enforce in court.

So I hope any companies due diligence would have stopped them bidding for the permits, because if they are rescinded, it could be no refunds.

PhoebeSnow · 18/01/2021 10:36

Could someone please explain to me how a three / four bankrupt person could stand as president in the first place? It’s something I’ve wondered for a long time. I mean once could be bad luck, but surely more than that shows lack of judgement at the very least.

PhoebeSnow · 18/01/2021 10:37

Is it just because it has never been forbidden?

JamieLeeCurtains · 18/01/2021 10:40

Maybe they are coalescing under Trump to some degree because of the way that Trump portrays himself as 'anti-government'? 'Drain the swamp' and all that.

The man at the head of government is anti-government. The ultimate boogaloo dream.

TooTrueToBeGood · 18/01/2021 10:51

Loving the irony of this tweet from Mike Pompeo on his official Secretary of State Twitter account:

"Deeply troubled by Russia's decision to arrest Aleksey Navalny. Confident political leaders do not fear competing voices, nor see the need to commit violence against or wrongfully detain, political opponents."

I wonder if he realises just how perfectly the last sentence applies to his boss.

DGRossetti · 18/01/2021 10:52

I hope the internet is being flooded with "Do you want a pardon ? Just send 10 BitCoins to this address and we will do the rest" type emails.

The beauty being, the more dodgy it looks, the more authentic it is. And there must be a few rich numbnuts out there that would fall for it.

Just think: even if you don't need a presidential pardon, these rare certificates will only increase in value as you pass them down to your heirs

(appeals to greed: check; mentions "family": check; uses "heirs" to sound impressive: check).

Hi Phoebe My understanding is that Trump has never been personally bankrupt. ( Although close to it a few times) . A number of his businesses have declared bankruptcy over the years, but not Trump as an individual.

Businesses with his name are set up, so that they are legal entities in their own right.
So the firm goes under, it's seen as an artificial legal body in it's own right, not the Orange One himself.

Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino = Bankrupt
Trump Castle Hotel and Casino=Bankrupt
Trump Entertainment Resorts = Bankrupt

Donald Trump. Not Bankrupt. (Yet)

DGRossetti · 18/01/2021 11:10

With the added fun of 50 state laws to be able to do it under.

I would imagine that US law is not that radically different from UK law, in that the protection of a limited company only applies if there is no deception of shareholders and/or regulators ?

The NRA refiling from NY to TX might have something to do with this - TX having laxer laws ????

If the hard drive wasn't encrypted, then the USA has a lot more to worry about than the Trump sideshow, trust me.

Ee yes, im not disputing that they are only being peaceful protestors. I'm just saying thay not all these groups are Trump supporters, some are anti government, some are about cresring race wars and some just want start a civil war.

Actually draining the swamp isn't about being anti government what he has been saying and talking about is what you call the conspiracy theorists speak about in terms of new world order, so draining the swamp is removing those people.

I mean you can go right into all that stuff if you really want to but thats the basis of it

DGRossetti · 18/01/2021 11:35

some are anti government, some are about cresring race wars and some just want start a civil war.

Helter Skelter and all that - the sentiment behind it hasn't gone away. Lynette Froome now walks free ...(and Sirhan Sirhan is still in jail from 1968 too).

When my DF was growing up in Italy, "draining the swamp" was actually just that ...

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2021 11:45

So they are not all pro Trump, and?

NotaRealLawyer · 18/01/2021 11:49

Sirhan Sirhan still alive and in jail? Jeez, off to have a look at that.
