It's shameful that the US has come to this point with Trump selling it to the highest bidder. The US has spent so many years telling other countries to get their house in order & now it seems it needs to follow its own advice.

Is this legal to buy a pardon?

Anniegetyourgun · 17/01/2021 20:56

Didn't we hear rumours of pardon-selling a few weeks ago? It rings a bell.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/01/2021 21:02

@Coquohvan

Is this legal to buy a pardon?
Absolutely not, if the money ends up with the 'pardon giver' (Scrotus).

But if someone wants to pay Joe Fuckface to 'present his case' with absolutely no guarantees that a pardon will be granted, that's not illegal. At least as I understand it.

NotaRealLawyer · 17/01/2021 21:08

@Coquohvan

I can't see how it can be. Surely it's a bribe? Or is Rudy giving out legal "advice" to those seeking a pardon and giving the Prez a cut?

There was the Cash for Honours scandal in the UK 2006/2007 - but the money was going to political parties rather than straight into a PM pocket. (I need to go and check up on that.)

Pondering further, perhaps any pardon payment will be going to yet another organisation Trump will set up? Instead of directly into his back pocket?

Lweji · 17/01/2021 21:08

It will be a case of "follow the money".

Yes, but IIRC it was more 'there are rumors that there are rumors'.

It's behind a paywall, but I've usually found incognito will work to bypass it.

Won't it just? One thing Trump does know a lot about, shifting money around.

Found this really sums up it

Armed protesters have been reported in state capitols in Ohio, Michigan, Texas, Oregon.

2 dozen reported in Columbus, Ohio
twitter.com/VenturaReport/status/1350869092727717888
These guys look like armed miltia. They are calling themselves the Boogaloo Boys

Similar story in Michigan. Again group calling themselves Boogaloo Boys. But it is being reported they were only there for about half an hour.

In Oregon 7 appear to have turned up.

The Independent describes them as
The “Boogaloo Boys” are a loosely termed group of right-wing extremists who either expect or want to incite the “boogaloo,” a second American civil war. Many espouse openly white supremacist and neo-Nazi views. They are all staunchly pro-gun, and most of them are loyal supporters of Donald Trump.

It sounds like they are using this as an opportunity to try and recruit new members more than to cause trouble today (in part because they appear to be vastly outnumbered by security forces).

It sounds like there are some 6000 - 15000 people who share these views.

The boogaloo movement’s most extreme white supremacist element is ratcheting up calls for civil war.

RedToothBrush · 17/01/2021 21:21

Apparently there was also supposed to be a rally in Utah. Journalists have said that no one so far has turned up.

JamieLeeCurtains · 17/01/2021 21:21

I gathered that a lot of the money ends up in one of Ivanka's business accounts as 'consultancy fees'.

NotaRealLawyer · 17/01/2021 21:22

I was looking at that NYT article AcrossThe Pond55. Very interesting read. Seemingly Clinton was not averse to a "pay for pardon"

From the article.

There are few historical parallels. Perhaps the closest occurred in the final hours of Bill Clinton’s administration when he issued 170 pardons and commutations, some of which went to people who paid six-figure sums to his family and associates. But even Mr. Clinton, who was seen as flouting protocols, mostly rewarded people who had gone through an intensive Justice Department review process intended to identify and vet the most deserving recipients from among thousands of clemency applications.

Mr. Trump has shunned that process more than any recent president, creating an ad hoc system in the White House that Mr. Kushner has had significant influence over and has relied on input from an informal network of outside advisers, including Mr. Tolman. That system favors pardon seekers who have connections to Mr. Trump or his team, or who pay someone who does, said pardon lawyers who have worked for years through the Justice Department system.

NotaRealLawyer · 17/01/2021 21:23

NYT Article continues:
Few regulations or disclosure requirements govern presidential clemency grants or lobbying for them, particularly by lawyers, and there is nothing illegal about Trump associates being paid to lobby for clemency. Any explicit offers of payment to the president in return could be investigated as possible violations of bribery laws; no evidence has emerged that Mr. Trump was offered money in exchange for a pardon

Lengthy article, definitely worth reading if anyone gets a chance to see it.

I'm sorry to say that we were not wondering because it has been posted at least twice just on this thread. Wink

He seems quite popular for some reason. Grin

Lweji · 17/01/2021 21:31

One thing Trump does know a lot about, shifting money around.

It may not work so well if there is a will to really go after him. Even GOP prosecutors may have an interest in doing it.

Duggeehugs82 · 17/01/2021 21:31

Yes sorry so i went to mary trumps twitter as was reading this thread that sent me to him, then got distracted by watching it and going on twitter then thought would be good idea to post here 🤦🏼‍♀️😁🙈 and yes im not sure why hes so popular haha 😍

My letter to Democratic Leader Schumer.

The Senate should vote to dismiss the article of impeachment once it is received in the Senate. We will be delaying indefinitely, if not forever, the healing of this great Nation if we do otherwise.

Very true

loving our normal world where phrases like “zip tie guy” and “mypillow guy” and “q-anon shaman” and “zip tie guy’s mom” are commonly understood characters in the reality show we were forced into at gunpoint

www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/uk/donald-trumps-menace-and-hunger-for-affirmation-a-dangerous-recipe-comey-39977509.html

"Donald Trump’s constant need for affirmation makes the next few days a dangerous time in the United States, former FBI director James Comey has warned.

Mr Comey, who was fired by Mr Trump in 2017, called the outgoing President a “demagogue” who has a “menace” to him in private similar to that of a mob boss."

Maybe Trump can move to Norfolk

White House: The full-sized Oval Office replica in Norfolk

It was built for the 2018 film Watergate and is now regularly seen in films, dramas and also news reports.

Nope, don't want him in norfolk, thanx.Smile
