I have a friend who lives in Palm Beach
Trump is tolerated there
no more than that

I found this in the Miami Herald, 22 Dec 2020, re Mar A Lago:

"Then in 2002, Trump signed another agreement, this time with the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States, transferring development rights for the historic landmark [Mar A Lago] to the non-profit. The deal substantially reduced his property taxes in exchange for a pledge to “forever extinguish their right to develop or use the property for any purpose other than club use.”

“In order to avoid an embarrassing situation for everyone and to give the president time to make other living arrangements in the area, we trust you will work with his team to remind them of the use agreement parameters,” Reginald Stambaugh, an attorney representing some of Trump’s neighbors, wrote in a letter last week to Mayor Gail Coniglio.

"Stambaugh argued that Trump — who before the start of the pandemic made frequent visits to the club — was already in violation of the agreement. "

I think this is a rather naive view of the subject tbh.

Well, I am nothing but politically naive! It was just an image, after all.

But to be clear: I have no idea what fate likely awaits Trump, in terms of legal repercussions. But I am hopeful he will not be in a position to run again in 2024; and I am hopeful he will not be in a position financially to set up Trump TV or similar; I am hopeful that he will pay in all manner of ways for his actions and inaction over the last four years, financially, and legally. Socially, he is dead in the water. I don't think he want to take iced tea with his MAGA support base.

Lweji · 17/01/2021 12:02

Hopefully he'll be in jail in 2024.

The one story in 10 that gives me hope for our future. There are some brave young people out there. There always were, and always will be ...

news.yahoo.com/maga-protester-punched-black-woman-215801637.html

MAGA protester punched by Black woman security guard fired by UMass Hospital

Therese Duke’s identity was exposed by her 18-year-old daughter on social media

The white woman caught on tape getting into a physical altercation with a Black female security guard the evening before the Capitol riots lost her job at UMass Hospital. The termination occurred after her daughter went viral for exposing her identity on social media.

On January 5th, Therese Duke and a group of pro-Trump protesters that included other family members were filmed harassing Ashanti Smith, a security guard working at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington D.C.

After Duke made a failed attempt to grab Smith’s phone out of her hand, the woman proceeded to punch Duke in the face once, to dissuade her. Following the incident, her very liberal 18-year-old daughter Helena Duke exposed her on social media.

@cbt944, it's quite something isn't it to think that that grifting buffoon actually looks down his nose at much of his own base? And they just take it from him.

I really struggle with the psychology of that.

Roussette · 17/01/2021 12:18

Trump loathes them all, they are just cannon fodder to him. If only they would realise. He finds them disgusting.

'“The people Trump despises most love him the most,” said Howard Stern, who hosted Trump on-air for years. Stern said, thesre are people he would not want in his hotels. “He’d be disgusted by them,” he said. “Go to Mar-a-Lago, see if there’s any people who look like you. I’m talking to you in the audience.”

In a video released by the group Republican Voters Against Trump, Troye recounted how Trump said in a task force meeting that one benefit of the pandemic was that he no longer would have to shake hands with his supporters.

“I don’t like shaking hands with people,” Troye quoted Trump as saying. “I don’t have to shake hands with these disgusting people.”

The psychology of abusive relationships is inescapable.

What should be of more interest - especially here (Hmm) is that it's clear being abused is an equal opportunity pasttime. It seems there are men who worship Trump in exactly the same way as women end up dependent on their abusers.

JanuaryChill · 17/01/2021 12:49

There are many many different types of abuse. And men can suffer domestic abuse too, although in far lower numbers than women.

What is the estimated gender split for Trump supporters?

Lweji
We really don't care about a wall that we knew it was never going to be built.

I do, however, care that the funding for that (and I would like some serious auditing of the cost per mile and who got given it on the basis of what quotes) was taken from monies previous allocated to education and housing for the families of a military that Trump alleged he supported. There's a degree of dishonesty there which I feel should definitely be called out.

This misappropriation might even in part explain why there was a surprising drop in overseas military votes cast for Trump in November 2020. Along with his disrespect for the war dead and his assertions that they were losers, and his disgusting comments about McCain having been captured and tortured, and other such things that many of the military may have perceived as slaps in the face.

Yohoheaveho · 17/01/2021 13:19

An excellent delegator to a splendid team
This phrase encapsulates so much of what was wrong with Trump!

I know a lot of US military personnel, living as I do in an area of the UK where there are two large USAF bases. And yes, most of them were Republican voters. All of them without exception did not vote last year. They didn't vote for Biden as far as I know, but they also did not vote for Trump - and these are lifelong Republican voters. Trump really shot himself in the foot with his comments and his diversion of funds.

Mine was only a suspicion, pointythings; thank you for the comment which seems to confirm it! Anecdata, I know, but the drop in military votes for him seems to have been real.

Some figures in this WP opinion piece from December

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-border-wall-was-a-complete-waste-of-time-and-money/2020/12/24/444c165e-4564-11eb-b0e4-0f182923a025_story.html

For taxpayers, to whom Mr. Trump promised that Mexico would foot the bill — it hasn’t paid a dime — the wall has been a raw deal. The administration managed to devote some $15 billion to construction, an amount that was supposed to be sufficient to build more than 700 miles of barriers. As The Post reported, roughly $3.3 billion of those funds — some diverted from building projects on U.S. military bases worldwide — will remain unused when Mr. Biden takes office. However, of that amount, $700 million will be required to unwind existing construction contracts, leaving a savings — if you can call it that — of about $2.6 billion.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/01/2021 13:53

Somebody is being paid $20 million a mile for that wall, going buy the amount actually built and the money spent. Does Trump have any friends in the construction industry, d'you suppose?

Unlikely

www.politico.com/news/2020/07/12/trump-border-wall-make-me-look-bad-357706

Saying it was done to embarrass him, President Donald Trump on Sunday said a reportedly defective section of his new border wall should not have been built by a private company.

DuncinToffee · 17/01/2021 14:02

And ofcourse Bannon is still facing trial in the 'We Build the Wall' fraud case.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/01/2021 14:12

That suggests three miles of defective wall cost a mere $42 million, not $20 per mile. Clearly they were unable to afford the highest quality material at the cut rate.

DuncinToffee · 17/01/2021 14:12

John Oliver did an episode where they went back to check on the wall and mentioned one of the companies involved

www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/aug/24/john-oliver-trump-border-wall-stupider-than-i-thought-was-possible

Nevertheless, the administration has continued to dole out massive contracts to wall-building construction firms, with the egregious example of North Dakota-based Fisher Sand & Gravel, whom Trump allegedly liked because the company’s owner, Tommy Fisher, frequently appeared on Fox News.

Fisher Sand & Gravel is a company with a checkered past, that partnered with a shady nonprofit whose backers are now under indictment for skimming money for their own use, in order to have a foreman who’s not an actual foreman help build a wall that looks like it’s going to collapse or get pushed over,” Oliver summarized. “And if you know anything about this administration, it will not surprise you to learn that Fisher has now wound up with over $2bn in border-building contracts.”

Wow. That guy really tells it like it is in simple and understandable words.

Unfortunately, the cult members don't like simple and understandable. They like double-speak and buzz-words.

I can’t stop laughing at the image of secret service men and women having to run round to Obama’s house to use the loo. I am also terrified, especially as some commentators seem to think that these two are actually the scariest members of the whole family in terms of future grabs for power.

They should have asked Chris Grayling to take over.
