To be PISSED OFF WITH MY HUSBAND for saying I love you to bits?

I LOVE YOU TO BITS?

WTF?
That is something a friend says about another friend, when there is something wrong, like in:

I love her to bits, BUT really she is wy out of line on this one and she should just shut up now. Or something.

Or, is "I love you to bits" something passionate you expect your husband to say?

So I am asking you my fine ladies: what is the meaning of "I love you to bits".

How is it I never spot the typos in the preview?

LuckyUnderpants · 28/10/2007 01:47

count your blessing scaryscarynight, what i wouldnt give for someone to love me to bits, to love me full stop would be enough for me, so whineing and appreciate what you have

willbiteyourneckandmakeulikeme · 28/10/2007 10:32

agree with op;

a simple...... "i love you"...is enough

kittywitch · 28/10/2007 11:27

Yeah, you've got more than a lot of people. I don't think you appreciate just how lucky you are.

saffy202 · 28/10/2007 11:33

Not sure if you are unreasonable or not but I always say to ds2 "I love you to bits and bobs and back again". It's just a nonsence saying really

agree too OP
its a real horrible senseless expression popular phrase at the moment
leaving me wondering bits of what..

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 11:41

TMMAM - the very nature of posting on that boards indicates the poster knows he/she is unreasonable. durr!

I am very reasonable about most things. But, I miss my husband lots.

Kittywits, you know nothing about what I have to be lucky about or not....

I think it means 'i would still love you if you were in bits, now follow me to my shed.........'

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 11:45

TMMAM - considering he is across the other half of the globe, and has been for the last two weeks, and will be for the next two weeks, a simple "I love you" followed by "I miss you" would be a lot nicer. And appear a lot more sincere than "I love you to bits" which I wonder where he heard in the first place....

I love you to bits....is a bloke's way of saying 'I Love You'.....the 'to bits' bit is a typical blokey thing which they seem to throw in/add on.....The most I get is 'Love Ya' and even then its normally said on the phone NEVER said to me in person probably because I'd stand there, in a shocked state wondering what the hell he's done wrong!

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 11:55

TMMAM - You see, my husband has never said it before. Only time I have ever heard the phrase is when a (girl) friend would say about another woman "I love her to bits, but, really she is a tad annoying at the moment the ways she goes on and on about that new bloke", or "She is my boss, I love her to bits, but, I wish she would stop giving me such short deadlines" etc. Never in a romantic sense.

But I understand the feeling you describe, and that is the one I want expressed to me!

MALO · 28/10/2007 11:58

Men can change y'know especially when so far away...don't knock him for it - its just his way of telling you he misses you and loves you......there's probably loads of MN's on here who'd love that said to them down the phone!

VVVQV is right on this one- be grateful!
