To be a bit jealous of over 50 holiday bookings

Toomuch2019 · 14/01/2021 09:06

I probably am but here goes

I was reading an article about surges in over 50s holiday bookings driven by the fact that they are anticipating getting vaccinated soon.

And I'm finding myself incredibly envious that there is a subset of the population that will be able to go about living normally and going abroad while the rest of us are locked away waiting for a vaccine.

I don't feel like I can plan anything holiday wise at least abroad right now as there is no timeline on vaccines for under 50s and I don't want to risk getting ill in another country. Particularly if insurances will only cover vaccinated people (which isn't the case yet but can see it moving in that direction).

I know there is no answer and obviously I'm not arguing vaccines aren't in right order but does anyone else feel wound up with articles like this rubbing it in?

I'm over 50
I doubt I'll be vaccinated soon....
I wouldn't be booking a holiday
PS I'm 52 I'm not old and I've worked through all lockdowns with KW children in schools !!!!

peak2021 · 14/01/2021 12:16

I don't feel upset, just upset that there will be many more people unable to take advantage of this because of the incompetent government and its slow response in March and September especially.

As they have died from the virus.

randomer · 14/01/2021 12:17

A few older people may be able to on holiday.I am older with family in Europe, I see no immediate opportunity of seeing them.I wish people would think.

Port1aCastis · 14/01/2021 12:18

Oh FFS
Which other Countries will let folks go in from UK
Why be jealous of something that's not likely happen
Ageism isn't helping anyone

CheltenhamLady · 14/01/2021 12:19

@Icanseegreenshoots

cheltenham I guess you would think that if your kids have had easy effortless access to lots of money from you! It wouldn't be so hard to get through university - buy cars and houses if your parents are bankrolling it all!

I think we are mostly talking about the vast majority of the young people that do NOT have access to Mummy and Daddy's coutts account actually.

You sound detached from reality quite frankly.

Again, you assume, that was not the reality. Every parent has to help fund their child through university today that is the way the system is set up.
Londonmummy66 · 14/01/2021 12:19

It's infuriating - as is obvious from the user name I fall into that category but I'm sick of the way we are locking our children up and trashing their education and then unlocking for the older adults first just like last time round.

For those saying that the vaccines are taking a long time to roll out, London hospitals are already onto vaccinating the 70-74 age group

edwinbear · 14/01/2021 12:19

Over 50's are not going to get some magical pass exempting them from the rules though Confused

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/01/2021 12:22

Over 50s are still paying tax anyway. My husband, almost 60, is still working as front line NHS and, although I am retired, I don't get my state pension yet and am paying tax on my workplace pension. We will also be paying for Covid for the rest of our lives.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/01/2021 12:25

Holidays? I should be so lucky. I'm 58 and work in the NHS full time and have been giving vaccinations on my days off.
There won't be any holidays for a couple of years.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 12:26

cheltenham In your neck of the woods maybe, but I guess you are conveniently forgetting all of the young people that simply can not afford to go to uni, and do not have parents that can help them. So they don't get to have a university education at all. University is fast becoming an education and option just for the wealthy as you have just confirmed, and how is that progress exactly?

At least pensioners had the opportunity to get into a good university because they were free, if they were bright enough. Now you have to pay tens of thousands of pounds to get a decent education, and the debt hanging over the young for decades should they be lucky enough to get a job at the end of it all. Yet we still have people like you saying it is 'fine' for young people when that is not the experience of so many. You are clearly just speaking from your own bubble of privilege with no clue at all as how others are faring.

FastFood · 14/01/2021 12:26

Good on them.
They suffered like anyone else, if they can relax and go abroad, I'm happy for them, at least some of us are experiencing a bit of hope and relief.

maddening · 14/01/2021 12:27

I thought that the rule was that they all need to carry on social distancing etc as otherwise it will undermine the effort?

randomer · 14/01/2021 12:29

pensioners...such an odd word. You wake up one day and you are one. And you have 90 somethings to care for.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 12:37

Why does the word pensioner bother you - it is a correct name for someone of retirement age.

PENSIONER:
a person who receives a pension, especially the retirement pension.

randomer · 14/01/2021 12:39

Sorry, having a bad day.Its so sad, everybody squabbling like chickens in a coop. You dont see yourself as a pensioner but the years roll by and suddenly you are.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 12:41

The young are unlikely to ever be called a pensioner, as they will most likely die paying the trillions of pounds of debt before they are able to claim any kind of pension or retirement provision, given the age of retirement just keeps going up and up.

I genuinely don't think the term pensioner will be in use twenty years from now. So maybe it should be seen as term for privilege rather than the usual entitlement that surrounds it.

@Toomuch2019

I'm feeling bad for posting now. I didn't mean to start such an angry fight.

It has made me think a lot so thanks to those who posted that IABU, particularly as jealousy of those who are vulnerable is not a nice emotion, I accept that.

I guess what I was looking for was some shared empathy "yes it's crap isn't it, I get why you are riled, the bbc shouldn't be publishing things like this as it is sh*t stirring. But don't worry one day this will all be forgotten". Thank you to those who understood what I meant and that I wasn't trying to antagonise things. But I can see that was shortsighted and should have seen where it would go.

I'll leave the thread now as I understand IABU.

I don't think it's actually your fault that the ageist and kneejerky politico-bots gravitated to your thread. Some of the more offensive posts on the thread are coming from.people that are fairly well known for running to any provocative thread title. Wink
GypsyLee · 14/01/2021 12:47

I'll be travelling asap I'm over 50, but it won't be holidays abroad.
I've been in bricks and mortar since March, I feel suffocated and want to be able to go on the road again.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 12:48

Grin That is fabulous live

randomer · 14/01/2021 12:48

entitlement?

UnderTheAurora · 14/01/2021 12:49

Is the OP also jealous of all the over 50s who have died because they are at greater risk from covid?

If the young were self isolating for the over 50s and percieve that as a hardship, have they told their own parents and grandparents what selfish fuckers they are for being older? I hope they've also had a go at all the people with diabetes, lung disease, cancer, heart disease and other health issues. What about fat people? It's the OP cross at having to isolate for them too?

KarmaNoMore · 14/01/2021 12:50

I’m over 50, looking at the delays and uncertainty I don’t expect to be vaccinated until Christmas (if I am lucky)

Don’t feel jealous, most of these people will have their holidays cancelled or plagued with issues.

MiaMarshmallows · 14/01/2021 12:50

DP and I have booked holidays for this year but I don't think it will be one rule for our age group and one for everyone else. The restrictions most likely remain the same regardless of having the vaccination.

IndieTara · 14/01/2021 12:51

I'm 54 and ad far as I know I'm number 9 in the top 10 category rankings for who gets the vaccine first.
Maybe you meant over 50's who are also frontline workers ?
