To be a bit jealous of over 50 holiday bookings

I probably am but here goes

I was reading an article about surges in over 50s holiday bookings driven by the fact that they are anticipating getting vaccinated soon.

And I'm finding myself incredibly envious that there is a subset of the population that will be able to go about living normally and going abroad while the rest of us are locked away waiting for a vaccine.

I don't feel like I can plan anything holiday wise at least abroad right now as there is no timeline on vaccines for under 50s and I don't want to risk getting ill in another country. Particularly if insurances will only cover vaccinated people (which isn't the case yet but can see it moving in that direction).

I know there is no answer and obviously I'm not arguing vaccines aren't in right order but does anyone else feel wound up with articles like this rubbing it in?

Elderly people in their 50s Grin

UnderTheAurora · 15/01/2021 10:31

I think pensioners need to help pay off the debt mountain, given the enormous sacrifices our young people have made for the elderly

Most 'pensioners' started paying tax 2 -5 years before young people do now. Many left school at 16 and went straight into work. The vast majority were at work by 18 as the opportunity to go to university was limited to a small percentage of the most academic only, which is certainly not the case now. So hopefully they've paid off the extra some on here consider that they owe in that additional tax and NI.

There is so much ageism on MN (I'm not even of retirement age but it's bloody obvious) and it almost always goes ignored when reported.

As for those jealous of decent private pensions, they were better because people died so much younger in the past and didn't have to be paid for as long.

If anyone thinks a state pension of £9,110.40 a year is a reason to feel angry with an entire generation, there's not much to say to that....

Christ the bitching ageism on this site is grim and foul
Pensioners paid their taxes for many many many years plus N.I.
Crack on and pay yours

Shitzngiggles · 15/01/2021 16:33

@Port1aCastis it really is awful isnt it? Never have I wanted a hide poster button so much as I have on this thread. One poster in particular seems to hate anyone over 50. Bizarre.

I am not sure what you mean, do you think only vaccinated ppl will be able to travel? It maybe cheaper for them wrt insurance, but I think the rules will be the same for all as they can still spread it.

I think (hope) it will be the same as last summer, so I have holidays booked.
If things dont get better noone will go anywhere vaccinated or not.

Over 50s here. We both went back to work May and shopped for our properly elderly (over 80s) parents and our vulnerable grown up dc. So not sure how people think they have saved us Confused
We've not booked any new holidays but will as soon as we can. We should however be on holiday abroad now but have rescheduled for next January, we didn't want a refund so as to help keep the travel companies employees in jobs.
Possibly be booking a UK holiday for the end of summer soon.
The shrieking and doom mongering on here is boring me quite a lot at the minute.

Port1aCastis · 15/01/2021 17:49

the shrieking and doom mongering

Ah yes and always always someone else shouldn't be doing stuff to save the selfish sorry arses who will not take personal responsibility for themselves but constantly blame others

malificent7 · 15/01/2021 17:57

Oh gosh im nearly 50...am I elderly?!

jamimmi · 15/01/2021 18:04

Really OP I wouldn't worry. Having had my 1st vacine as an HCP I can tell you quite clearly that the advise given is that all current government advice including masks and social distancing still applies even after the second vacine. As many over 50s wont have had it yet they maybe in for a shock . I know my 82 yr old MIL was. She too thought freedom after the vacine was a given. We dont know yet if it stops transmission only that it reduces the effects of COVID. I'm still kind of hoping to make my summer holiday delayed form Last year but no holding my breath fo me my Dh 51 and the teens.

Toomuch, so what if you can't travel abroad for the foreseeable? It won't kill you. We had a lot of hot weather last summer and hopefully will do so again this year. You'd be surprised how many really nice places are not that far away and you don't have any airport hassle.
