@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

The FBI don't have to provide a no-fly list anyway, if the airlines decide not to allow guns in passenger compartments (which isn't a right for passengers, because of cabin pressure; I think they are allowed in the hold in most places?) and to require mask-wearing (as they are fully entitled to do so long as it is clearly stated at the time you buy your ticket that this will be enforced).

Last I heard, the FBI hadn't yet issued any no-fly orders over this little local riot; has that changed? I know some congressman was wittering about it, but it wasn't true at that point.

Interesting to be discussing airlines rights to ban guns from planes in the same thread as Twitters rights to ban Trump.

Incidentally, it was only Trumps personal account that was banned. The official POTUS one wasn't ?

A much bigger issue here, really (and it applies to the UK) is the sneaky use of "personal" accounts to conduct state business without any oversight or risk of censure. Which risks eroding centuries of precedent about what constitutes law. Especially when coupled with the adoption of the UK government (with fuck all consultation) to ruling by proclamation rather than parliament.

NotaRealLawyer · 15/01/2021 13:24

The Club for Growth has supported the campaigns of 42 of the rightwing Republicans senators and members of Congress who voted last week to challenge US election results, doling out an estimated $20m to directly and indirectly support their campaigns in 2018 and 2020, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics

It's just a Republican Senator puppet show really isn't it? Jumping to the rustle of dollars. Hawley, Cruz and Boebert the main beneficiaries. No surprise there.

prh47bridge · 15/01/2021 13:28

@RedToothBrush - The question about 2/3 majority has been answered earlier in the thread. The requirement is that 2/3 of the senators present must vote for conviction. If a senator is present but chooses to abstain that is effectively the same as voting for acquittal. However, if a senator chooses not to be present when the vote is taken it reduces the number of votes needed to convict.

Now a left wing activist has been arrested for storming the capitol ....hmmm so not quite everyone involved was right wing it seems 🤔

This is an interesting read. There's more of those shadowy super-rich with dubious morals and aims with even more $$$ than you can shake a stick at.

Those poor deluded Trump voters who think the GOP etc are doing all this out of the goodness of their hearts.

This ^

Normally a prominent figure might indicate that their personal account is not reflective of their company views. Or even if it isn't stated a CEOs Twitter might have noticeable different content and will retweet from the company account not prosuce original announcements there.

The fact that Trumps personal social media became essentially the official accounts and his way of engaging with his followers is not the fault ofTwitter etc and then put them in the difficult position of managing a personal account which is making unacceptable comments but has also turned into the official communication channel of a head of state. Maybe they should have made it clearer to the US government that a personal account shouldn't be used that way but maybe politicians/staffers should have tried to enforce a distinction on Trump (except he's the president... And also it suited some of them just fine)

The National Archives will receive, preserve, and provide access to all official Trump Administration social media content, including deleted posts from @realDonaldTrump and @POTUS. Read more about preserving President Trump's archives

Duly noted. Do shout up if you find another.
DGRossetti · 15/01/2021 13:44

Of course Trump also made great capital out of Hilary Clintons personal email too.

TheSilveryPussycat · 15/01/2021 13:47

In those videos of inside the Capitol there were security shutters which were not fully down. Shouldn't they have been deployed when things outside looked threatening?

Back to "condemn." Wondered if the word on the autocue was "condone" and he misread it because he didn't even know the word condone.

Not if they prevent people exiting if there is a fire.

It's a well known fact that the US internal assessment of security threats overeggs the black protests and underestimates the whites. Reflecting an institutional bias, so you'd expect that. Another area where the UK and US rub arse cheeks.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/01/2021 13:52

If anyone has half an hour to spare, I recommend Adrian Chiles' interview with James Comey on R5Live this morning. It's on BBC Choices and starts just after 11am. It was fascinating and Chiles was a much better interviewer than I expected.

Yes, one rioter has. And so he should be. I believe he said he was there to document it all but was egging them on.
Not quite everyone, agreed, one was not right wing.... do let us know if you find another cycling Grin

www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/utah-man-charged-federal-court-following-events-united-states-capitol

The Complaint alleges that during the events at the U.S. Capitol, Sullivan, wearing a ballistics vest and gas mask, entered the U.S. Capitol through a window that had been broken out, pushing past U.S. Capitol Police once inside. The Complaint also alleges that Sullivan admits to filming and being depicted in video footage that shows him present, outside of the Speaker’s Lobby within the U.S. Capitol, at the shooting of a woman by a U.S. Capitol Police officer.

The details contained in the charging documents are allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law

Don't see any charges about being " left wing".

BruceAndNosh · 15/01/2021 14:03

This is about the left wing Activist arrested.
www.politico.com/news/2021/01/14/liberal-activist-charged-capitol-riot-459553

I'm not surprised, in fact I would have thought it strange if not a single far left rioter was found

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/01/2021 14:03

I have tracked down the left-wing activist, who went to the police on 7th January about the shooting he witnessed at the Capitol, was on CNN that evening, and has since been arrested. He clearly isn't a Trumpist, and he was certainly filming throughout events there.

The fact that looking for "left wing" and "activist" and "Capitol" finds precisely one person's name in all of Hannity and the rest's comments is clearly of interest. Let's see, how many thousand was that crowd estimated to contain? And they have located a whole one of them who wasn't there to support Trump? Wowsers.

Oh, and the CNN videographer Jade Sacker, who was with him observing, makes two, if we assume CNN are Antifa. (Or BLM. Or whatever other organisation we use as a boo-word.) I am not sure whether she has yet been arrested for filming though.

DGRossetti · 15/01/2021 14:04

through a window that had been broken out

Hmm

I would have thought that at a very minimum external windows would be blast proof.

NotaRealLawyer · 15/01/2021 14:10

I think these threads, after all this time, are well known for having a wider perspective and deeper analysis, than merely putting people in left or right "boxes".

merrymouse · 15/01/2021 14:11

Don't see any charges about being " left wing".

He claims that he was an 'undercover reporter' and that was why he was inciting other rioters.

He has previously been arrested for "rioting and criminal mischief charges 'stemming from a Black Lives Matter protest in Utah last year".

Whether or not he is telling the truth, it's normal for a certain kind of person to be affiliated with a variety of fringe political movements.

It doesn't make any difference to the charges against Trump.

DGRossetti · 15/01/2021 14:14

He claims that he was an 'undercover reporter' and that was why he was inciting other rioters.

Isn't that gonzo journalism.

Hunter S. would have loved this ...

pointythings · 15/01/2021 14:29

Oh cycling, is that the best you can do? I mean, there's hordes of people out there claiming the majority of the mob were Antifa and BLM and they orchestrated the whole thing, and it was all fake news...

Nobody on this thread has claimed saintliness for the left, or its complete absence on the 6th. You're just committing a lot of whataboutery.
