I like how Americans are allowed to change their vote (in case they have somehow got it wrong - brexit nerds may remember this has happened in the UK)

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 21:38

@JamieLeesCurtains

Is that 4 Rep abstentions or absences??

197 is a shit number for Trump.

Its still 197 more than it should be for anyone who has taken an oath to the constitution.
ludothedog · 13/01/2021 21:39

So 5 Republicans didn't vote. I guess they didn't have the courage to vote for impeachment but did not want to vote against it either. Now that's really disappointing.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 21:40

What happens to the 10 who voted against?

As we found in the UK, sticking your neck out against the party (even if there's no party whip) ends your career. And gets you death threats.

4 not 5. 1 Dem doesn't appear to have voted too.

not clear why. or who.

JamieLeesCurtains · 13/01/2021 21:41

I'm imagining Trump ranting, Red.

I didn't even make two hundred? Two fucking hundred??! I want names. I want NAMES!

As far as within the majority of the party, I don't think anything will happen.

But the MAGA crowd will be baying for 'traitor's blood'

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 21:42

It’s a pity Trump isn’t younger as he’s got to live with this for the rest of his life.

I’m sure he will cope!

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 13/01/2021 21:42

Probably checking with Rudi if they can get a recount.

I’m actually amazed this man hasn’t had a stroke - all that anger and high bmi...

Very long, from CNN

The House has just voted to impeach President Trump for the second time – making him the only US president to ever be impeached twice. The resolution passed 232 to 197.

The impeachment resolution the House voted on charges Trump with a single article, "incitement of insurrection" for his role in last week's deadly Capitol riot.

There is no such thing as a routine impeachment but this one is unprecedented in all sorts of ways.

The overall impeachment process laid out in the Constitution is relatively simple:

A president commits "high Crime or Misdemeanor"
The House votes to impeach
The Senate conducts a trial
This impeachment process will feel entirely new and different from the one we saw in late 2019 around the Ukraine investigation, most notably because the Senate trial is expected to occur after Trump leaves office.

Here's why that's important:

New President Joe Biden will be asking the Senate to vote on his Cabinet nominees and act on legislation to address the Covid pandemic as well as relief for Americans hurt by the troubled economy.

In 2020, Senate business ground to a complete halt during the trial. This time, incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is hoping to pursue a half-day schedule to conduct the trial part of the day and business the rest of the day.

The charges this time are much simpler to convey and understand, however. It should still take some number of days with Chief Justice John Roberts presiding and senators sitting in judgment. When both of the new Democratic senators from Georgia are seated, it will take 17 Republicans voting with Democrats to reach a two-thirds majority and convict Trump.

The swift effort to impeach him certainly puts Trump in the position of wanting to keep Republican senators on his side. In that regard, it would keep him in check during the last week of his presidency.

Remember: Impeaching Trump in the House does not remove him from office. Neither a second House impeachment nor even a Senate vote to convict Trump and remove him from office would prevent him from running again, in 2024 or beyond.

Rather, after two-thirds of senators present voted to remove Trump, a simple majority of senators present would have to approve an additional vote to bar him from the presidency in the future.

Barring him from further office could also cost him his more-than $200,000 per year pension if the Senate wants to take that way.

Sunbird24 · 13/01/2021 21:43

He’s probably claiming this was stolen too and he actually won by a landslide...

TooTrueToBeGood · 13/01/2021 21:45

The vote may have passed but it is utterly shameful that 197 voted against. What exactly would he need to do for those disgraceful excuses for public servants to find their consciences?

The saddest thing of all is that Trump and his minions are just the head of the boil. There is a whole bucket load of pus underneath them that needs draining and it goes right to the heart of American society.

I'm sorry for those decent Americans out their but I think the rest of us need to seriously consider appointing another nation into the role of Leader of the Free World. Land of the Free and Home of the Brave my hairy arse.

Roussette · 13/01/2021 21:46

I’m sure he will cope!

I doubt it very much. More than half the House voted for impeachment, including TEN of his own party.
No one stands up to him from his party and who knows by the time it reaches the Senate, it could well be more.
This is very damaging for him. It means he can't run for office again an the name Trump is tainted forever so that rules out Ivanka or heaven help us Don Jr.
His ego will be damaged beyond belief. Let's hope his cult followers get bore with him being a loser.

I believe the term is "won bigly" Wink

Never mind. He's shat on his kids chances.
lionheart · 13/01/2021 21:48

@littlebillie

So what happens next, is he still president?
Still president but there will be a trial.
Igotjelly · 13/01/2021 21:49

Could Mitch M's reluctance to bring back the senate early be a backdoor sign of wanting to wait until Dems control the Senate in order to increase the chances of conviction?

Of course on top of all the other stuff going on.....

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 21:51

I think we will see an Oklahoma style attack on a US democratic institution / a politicial assasination(s) within 4 years.

This is here now. 197 House Representatives just legitimised extremists.

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 21:52

Surely his behaviour since losing the election meant that was already the case though, even before the impeachment?

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is simply being impeached is not enough to prevent him running again. He needs to be found guilty by the Senate otherwise he's free as a bird politically.
minou123 · 13/01/2021 21:54

Is Trump releasing a video tonight?

chomalungma · 13/01/2021 21:54

Has anyone seen Designated Survivor?

It's Netflix - and basically involves an explosion at the State of the Union - with the only survivor being the Cabinet member for Housing who was in the White House.

Given what's happened recently, it's not as fictional as it seemed at the time.

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 21:55

Technically he can, yes.

I hope so. Although I'll probably have to save my popcorn for the morning as going to bed soon.
