'What republic?' asks *DongDingDong, apparently ignorant of the nature of the political entity we know as the United States of America.

@DGRossetti

I agree. Like Charles Stuart, he's being put on trial. Thankfully for him, though, he won't be beheaded, he's only facing being barred for life from standing from federal office.

I'm also reminded of the early period of the pandemic when Trump was attempting to push states into opening up their economies again. I remember the Governor of New York (I've temporarily forgotten his name) refused to oblige and said of Trump: 'He's not King.'

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/01/2021 17:13

buttery81, that poor horse!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 13/01/2021 17:14

Hmm. I hate the thought of Trump being a blueprint for the Republican party future, but I'm afraid this writer is right.

Thanks, @buttery81, I was already feeling quaite unwell. That's finished me off. G&T to settle the stomach, I think (it's OK, sun well over the yardarm where I am, GMT+2)!

Andrew Cuomo, Governor of NY. He always stood up to Trump.

(his brother is Chris Cuomo anchor on CNN. They look alike but the penny didn't drop for a while!)

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/01/13/politics/inauguration-security-us-secret-service-washington

The US Secret Service on Wednesday officially took charge of security for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration as authorities warn of new threats across the country and unfold a massive security presence in Washington, DC, after last week's violence at the US Capitol.

I detestJim Jordan too. Trump has just given him the Medal of Freedom, the highest honour you can get. Yuk.

It must be quite galling for people who genuinely deserve this sort of honour to realise that anything handed out by Trump is automatically devalued.

PerkingFaintly · 13/01/2021 17:23

Putin's laughing so hard he'd fall off if he tried to sit on a horse just now.

All his Christmases really have come this fine festive season.

A lot of people returned honours after the Beatles were given MBEs in the 1960s.

The whole system stinks anyway. When the monarchy goes, they can take their **ing honours with them.

ListeningQuietly · 13/01/2021 17:25

The Cuomo Family have done quite well for themselves Smile

There's a fair bit of Whataboutism going on in the House debate.
Some dreadful excuses for not voting to

I admit to being biased, but I get much more irate at extreme female Reps and Senators than male ones. Is it because I expect women to have a more measured attitude?
Similarly apologists like McNinny and Jenna Ellis - both highly intelligent women who are prepared to do and say anything to get Trump re-elected

TheSilveryPussycat · 13/01/2021 17:26

Sorry to harp on, but in normal times would the public have been able to attend on Wednesday?

The suffragettes were probably opposed by more women than men.

Also, if a person shows you who they are, believe them.

Thank you for the thread.

Holding my breath till the 20th, and trying to find time to follow the thread properly. Grin

Yes

Hence why the visitor ropes were up
And the press etc were in the gallery watching and filming

You clearly haven’t RTFT, @mathanxiety Hmm I explained what I meant in a subsequent post.

It's interesting isn't it. I have found myself in the past expecting more of a female politician because they are female. Which is ridiculous.

However, in the case of Trump and his ilk, I can't irate with them because he does not hide that he is a misogynistic perv and I don't understand how they can support that.

DGRossetti · 13/01/2021 17:41

And sexist.

CaveMum · 13/01/2021 17:42

@terrywynne unfortunately the US political establishment is incredibly misogynistic - you only have to look at attitudes to abortion to realise that.

We are a far from perfect country, but at least the regulation of female bodies is a very minority opinion.

BruceAndNosh · 13/01/2021 17:43

My most recent bete noire is Marjorie Taylor Greene , Quackpot Rep from Georgia. Vehement mask denier, refusing to wear one even while in crowded lockdown room in Capitol.

She is still tweeting that Trump will continue in office after 20th

Gingaaarghpussy · 13/01/2021 17:45

I'm currently watching CNN and Jim jordan has just said his bit. I felt the need to shout that he was full of shit.

NotaRealLawyer · 13/01/2021 17:50

Blimey. Jim Jordan wore a jacket. No shirt sleeves rolled up as per usual look.
He must be deliberately trying to upset Rousette. He knows you are looking in R.

(These threads must have him worried about his sartorial elegance. Rumour has it that: he has been lurking on Style and Beauty.)

I think I turned the sound down while he was talking about putting a man on the moon.

Would it be fair to say his act has run out of material?Grin
