@Dongdingdong

Trump was capable of destroying the world.

And yet... he didn't destroy the world, despite spending the last four years as the most powerful man on the planet. An inconvenient truth to you lot I know!

A POTUS' first term is typically 'softly softly' to see how the wind is blowing wrt their agenda and because they want to be re-elected to a second term.

The SECOND (and last) term is when they typically really let fly. Luckily we prevented that in November.

Given the atrocities and double dealings we had during Scrotus' first term,dealings that already resulted in impeachment, God only knows what he'd have gotten up to in the next 4 years.

A wise person once said "The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour".

Roussette · 13/01/2021 16:36

HOWEVER, it may well have been a year ago she showed people round but some in the picture have been arrested apparently.

@NotaRealLawyer

Yes. Duncin. You are way ahead of me there. Smile
Haha, I read it just before you posted

The ITV programme last night showed Robert Moore filming inside the Capitol - the only Tv crew to have done so. There's an interview with him about it that can be downloaded from Radio4Media Show podcast

BBC live blog

First procedural vote done... now onto the next
The House has just wrapped its first procedural vote on the rule that will guide the upcoming consideration of the impeachment article itself.

The rule has passed. Now, they're onto the second procedural vote on the resolution. After this concludes, we'll get to debating the impeachment article.

Again, we're expecting the actual vote on impeachment to come around 15:00 local time (20:00GMT).

Wow Ali Alexander, a black man who started the Stop the Steal movement, says he was assisted by 3 Congressmen! On CNN now.

Thanks!

I don't much like the company she keeps. How many of those have been arrested for violent trespass in the Capitol? Three, four, more?

TheSilveryPussycat · 13/01/2021 16:45

So have I got this right? Members of the public could walk around the Capitol the day before the congressional event? Shouldn't security have been very high, and the Capitol closed to outsiders - one of those people could perhaps have planted an explosive device.

CaveMum · 13/01/2021 16:47

@ScaredOfDinosaurs

Start with Fawlty Towers - "Well we didn't start it!" "Yes you did, you invaded Poland!"

My brain went straight there too Grin

@AcrossthePond55 I’m sure this is true of most presidents. But I don’t think Trump even knows the meaning of the words “softly softly” TBH. I’d say “all guns blazing” is more his style.

Silvery
Members of the public have the right to watch their lawmakers in action

in the UK the public chamber in the House of Commons is normally full

Jim Jordan calling for Liz Chaney to be removed from leadership.

I detest that man.

Yes. On a zoom call last night my house rep. called these tours what they were - reconnaissance tours.
DGRossetti · 13/01/2021 16:54

One of the reasons Trump is where he is, is because he genuinely appeared to believe that he was going to effectively start the House of Trump as the US ruling monarchs. One ringpiece to bind them all, if you will. He thinks he is an absolute monarch in the style of our own much missed Charles Stuart. Whose trial I noticed was discussed by a few US legal scholars as to the origins of the concept that a monarch can be tried by their country ... occasionally I've noted British legal cases referenced by US jurists.

Roussette · 13/01/2021 16:57

I detestJim Jordan too. Trump has just given him the Medal of Freedom, the highest honour you can get. Yuk.

He has history with his wrestling which was enough for me. And he never wears a jacket which really gets on my nerves Grin

@gwenneh - is your House Representative Mikie Sherrill, or is there at least one other member of Congress who saw this happen on Jan 5th and called it that?

DGRossetti · 13/01/2021 16:59

P J O Rourke and Ron Paul ...

Yes, that's her.

NotaRealLawyer · 13/01/2021 16:59

DGR, my own opinion is that he's always wanted to be Vladimir Putin.
Especially, the " President for Life" part.

(Although, I don't think he has the same bare chested horse riding skills)

gwenneh · 13/01/2021 17:03

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom It also sounds like Rep. Val Demings said the same on CNN -- but I didn't see that first hand.
