To ask if you rotate your clothes?

When I was small, my mum used to pack winter clothes away in the spring and bring out summer clothes - and vice versa in the fall. I'm from up north (way up north), so it made sense as we had proper snow gear etc.

My DH (from London) and friends (mainly Londoners too) think this is really odd behaviour. Obviously I have some stuff for all seasons but knitted dresses, thick scarves and woolly socks get boxed up around Easter, and strapless dresses and sandals brought out. It means everything gets looked at too in case it's no longer needed/liked, and aired outside. Is it just me?

(I've also just packed away most of my work clothes as I'm only going in once a week and a few smart outfits suffice. I like a fairly empty wardrobe)

Don't see the point in packing them away (don't have space anyway).

I love the archaic use of "fall" for autumn too - is that a regional thing?

Plonque · 12/01/2021 15:29

No, but I live in northern England where it's common place to need a snuggly jumper in mid August.

aceyace · 12/01/2021 15:30

Yes I put heavy coats scarfs jumpers in a suitcase and bring out the dresses sandals etc around Easter

alienspiderbee · 12/01/2021 15:31

I think there isn't enough variation in the seasons for it to be worthwhile. Especially when it can end up being 20 degrees in March and 10 degrees in August

Boulshired · 12/01/2021 15:32

Not for season but I seem to have a rotation of sizes going on.

Robbybobtail · 12/01/2021 15:32

I dont pack them away as i have enough wardrobe space to have a winter and a summer wardrobe so to speak! If you have limited space though i can see the sense in packing heavy winter stuff away and putting it in the loft/under the bed etc to make room for lighter stuff.
Eeh by gum, those sissy southerners dont know what it's like to need proper gear to wrap up against the biting northern cold do they OP?Grin

EternalOptimist7 · 12/01/2021 15:33

I put stuff up in the loft but I have to because I have so much. I keep some “ neutral” clothes down eg layers but basically my wardrobe is Autumn/Winter or Spring/Summer.

Whenwillow · 12/01/2021 15:34

I do that. We're short on space so clothes that aren't worn go in the loft, then come out again in the appropriate season.

Whenwillow · 12/01/2021 15:35

Also you say 'fall' so are you from the US?

pontiouspilates · 12/01/2021 15:37

I do this. It's always nice to 'rediscover' clothes that have been packed away for a few months.

alienspiderbee · 12/01/2021 15:38

Actually I did this when living at much more southerly latitudes as the seasons were far more distinct. In the temperate climate of the UK I might need to wrap up against the cold at any time of year!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 12/01/2021 15:38

Yes especially holiday summer clothes , don't have enough room in wardrobe for both and not going to wear a summer dress in dec, so put things like that under bed.
Don't pack as much winter stuff away as jumpers can be worn all year , but def hats , scarfs , xmas clothes and really wintery wear. Im originally from london

SpudsandGravy · 12/01/2021 15:38

When friends mention doing this I've often wished I was organised enough, but sadly I'm not.

During lockdown, though, I've been rotating them from the bottom of the pile draped over the back of a chair in the spare room to the top, into the washing and back again :-)

refusetobeasheep · 12/01/2021 15:39

Yes I do this - grew up in Yorkshire

Bananalanacake · 12/01/2021 15:40

I thought you meant rotate as in when you have ironed them you put the clean Tshirts, tops at the bottom of the pile and wear the ones from the top. I do that, even with pants, thought it was normal.

Angeldust747 · 12/01/2021 15:42

Yep, maxi dresses and summer stuff go in the suitcase in the loft. Very wintry stuff goes away in the summer, but I'd say 90% of my stuff is our year round

HintOfVintagePink · 12/01/2021 15:44

Yes we do this. I don’t like rammed wardrobes so we rotate around Easter and again around early October. It’s lovely to rediscover things each time.

We keep basics out all year round and ‘occasion’ wear in a separate cupboard (not that we need it much!)

South coast here

Imiss2019 · 12/01/2021 15:45

Yes would drive me bonkers to see summer dresses and shorts next to chunky jumpers.

Plus it feels like getting a new wardrobe twice a year!

Ithinkhedidit · 12/01/2021 15:45

I don't, although I do have friends who do this. I'm south west. I have very few clothes I don't wear year round - most of it can be layered up in autumn/winter and even in summer there are many days I appreciate a warm cardi and thick socks! So it's not something I feel I need to do.

Snap. When I lived in the SE I used to do this, but now I live in the north of England. While there are still very hot or very cold days, they seem to be able to occur any time within a 6 month period!
maloofhoof · 12/01/2021 15:46

Yes I've always done this

isadorapolly · 12/01/2021 15:46

I do, for me and all the kids, but it’s not something my mum did. I only want to see things I can actually wear right now when I look into my wardrobe.

sunlightbuttons · 12/01/2021 15:51

Yes I do this and I'm in the south. I don't really have enough wardrobe space otherwise. My wardrobe is a very normal size, but I just have loads and loads of clothes Blush

No! I shall Google....!

I do too, find it annoying having my heavy coats and scarfs in my way and taking up unnecessary space in my wardrobe.
