When I was small, my mum used to pack winter clothes away in the spring and bring out summer clothes - and vice versa in the fall. I'm from up north (way up north), so it made sense as we had proper snow gear etc.

My DH (from London) and friends (mainly Londoners too) think this is really odd behaviour. Obviously I have some stuff for all seasons but knitted dresses, thick scarves and woolly socks get boxed up around Easter, and strapless dresses and sandals brought out. It means everything gets looked at too in case it's no longer needed/liked, and aired outside. Is it just me?

(I've also just packed away most of my work clothes as I'm only going in once a week and a few smart outfits suffice. I like a fairly empty wardrobe)

I do that with some of my clothes - usually put away the really summery things in winter, and also rearrange things in my cupboard - so might put the coats to the far side in winter.

RozHuntleysStump · 12/01/2021 19:07

Yes,I do. I only have a small wardrobe and a chest of drawers so can’t have too much on the go at once. No point it being half full of summer dresses when it’s too cold. I’m thinking of storing all my smart clothes too since I seem to live in jeggings and comfy tops these days. Not even my gym clothes are seeing daylight.

faithfulbird20 · 12/01/2021 19:08

Yeah we did this as kids and adults. Otherwise I'd be wearing winter clothes in summer! I still try to do it now but with limited space it's hard...I just layer up...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/01/2021 19:14

Yes, I pack away things like shorts, summer dresses and skirts in those vacuum bags. I don't have huge amounts of wardrobe space so I always do this. It also makes finding things so much easier if you only have about 2/3 of your clothes in the wardrobe.

Sceptre86 · 12/01/2021 19:16

Yes I do and I do the same for the children. Dh wears t-shirt in winter but then puts the heating on full blastHmm

StoneofDestiny · 12/01/2021 19:28

I just put winter clothes in a different part of the wardrobe and in different drawers - wouldn't pack them up - don't they come out all creased up?

RavingAnnie · 12/01/2021 19:30

I've never understood this. Apart from a handful of items, I wear the same clothes all year round pretty much. Just more layered in the winter.

Crapbuttrue · 12/01/2021 19:34

Yes, I do that and yes, friends think I'm weird.

I love unpacking last seasons stuff and seeing clothes I'd forgotten I had.

But this year I've got loads of clothes gathering dust.... occasionally I'll wear them to wfh but generally it's the comfy stuff

keyworkerhonestguv · 12/01/2021 19:41

Yes i do this! Helps maximise wardrobe space. Wouldnt bother if i had enough wardrobes.

Whiskysoda · 12/01/2021 19:46

I’m in the uk Midlands and I have two wardrobes, winter and summer basically
( well, I have three if you count my cruise outfits, all sequinned frocks and cocktail dresses,)

Nothing weird with having sweaters, socks and Winchester pyjamas in your drawers for November and shorts in your drawers for august.

Whiskysoda · 12/01/2021 19:47

Not Winchester, winceyette

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 12/01/2021 19:51

Yes definitely - don't have space to have all my clothes out at once!!

JaceLancs · 12/01/2021 20:08

I don’t have enough space so do this
I quite look forward to having a good sort each time
I also do it with footwear
Mostly wearing boots at the moment so no point in having sandals out

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/01/2021 20:12

my mother does this but I dont. Mainly because my winter wardrobe is basically my summer wardrobe with thick tights and a cardigan :o Ok so the little summer playsuits etc maybe not, but everything else is dual season. I mainly wore black jeans at work (hospitality) with varying tops and jackets depending on season/shift length so it didnt make sense to seperate them out.

I buy clothes with an eye on wearing them all year round if I can. So I bought an absolutely gorgeous Monsoon dress that looks lovely on its own with sandals in the summer but also looks really nice with a roll neck underneath and riding boots in winter.

whiteonesugar · 13/01/2021 09:48

Yes I do this, we are SE England.

I do it for the wardrobe space tbh, I dont want a load of stuff there that I wont wear for months, so I do a swap. We have an ottoman bed so its under there, easy to grab if we have an unseasonably warm or cold day.

Titsywoo · 13/01/2021 13:00

Yes I do as I hate having a packed wardrobe. Spring and autumn type clothing not so much but sunnery dresses/shorts or heavy jumpers etc go away at the end of each season. I just stick them in a vacuum pack bag so they end up pretty small and go in the eaves cupboards.

LilaButterfly · 13/01/2021 13:02

I do it for my kids mainly to avoid struggles when DD decides she wants to wear a summer dress to school in the snow.

kowari · 13/01/2021 13:05

No, they all fit in three drawers and on my valet rail. I put jeans to the back and shorts to the front in summer.

Bearnecessity · 13/01/2021 13:24

Yes I do this Op I don't like a wardrobe rammed with everything I own, I want to see clearly what I will wear.
