To ask if you rotate your clothes?

When I was small, my mum used to pack winter clothes away in the spring and bring out summer clothes - and vice versa in the fall. I'm from up north (way up north), so it made sense as we had proper snow gear etc.

My DH (from London) and friends (mainly Londoners too) think this is really odd behaviour. Obviously I have some stuff for all seasons but knitted dresses, thick scarves and woolly socks get boxed up around Easter, and strapless dresses and sandals brought out. It means everything gets looked at too in case it's no longer needed/liked, and aired outside. Is it just me?

(I've also just packed away most of my work clothes as I'm only going in once a week and a few smart outfits suffice. I like a fairly empty wardrobe)

There is not enough space in my wardrobe for all my clothes (small room, not loads of clothes!). Anything obviously seasonal goes in a suitcase in the roof as the seasons dictate. But I always have woolly jumpers on hand!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/01/2021 16:16

I've tried to but I found trying to do the buttons up when they were round the back too difficult and now I just put them on normally.

drspouse · 12/01/2021 16:19

@FrankskinnerscRoc

I do a capsule wardrobe so stuff gets packed away. Plus I keep a suitcase packed & ready to go should I need to dash off on last minute holz.
Ah what a lovely concept! When I lived in a developing country in the sticks I kept an overnight bag packed as if we decided at 1pm that there was urgent business in the capital an hour away we had a 50/50 chance of not getting back before dark i.e. having to stay over.
goody2shooz · 12/01/2021 16:23

I didn’t even HAVE summer clothes when we lived in Scotland (cold period houses)... Now we’re re down south I do the rotation of summer and winter clothes too, but I always have woolly cardis to hand whatever the season! Cauld tattie - as we say. I love pulling out the summer stuff after these long winters! Would love to do the whole ‘winter curtains and rugs’ thing too, but make do with changing throws and bringing out sheepskin rugs in autumn.

latedecember1963 · 12/01/2021 16:24

Not so much clothes, although I do put winter coats, scarves and hats away after Easter until Autumn.
I do rotate my shoes. It's always a sad day when I put my summer sandals away at the end of September.

pricklymole · 12/01/2021 16:26

No, I wear the same clothes year round with the exception of switching trousers for shorts in the summer. They all stay in my wardrobe year round.

CleverCatty · 12/01/2021 16:28

Yes, in small attic space but sometimes I forget what I have up there.

I have loads of clothes (too many) so helps if I have the ones out which are 'season appropriate'.

Confusedandshaken · 12/01/2021 16:28

The only thing that really changes between the seasons is that I put jumpers over my T-shirts in winter and wear boots and socks instead of flip flops. The jeans stay the same for all except the very hottest summer days. I do move my winter coats and hats from the hall to the wardrobe for the summer.

BlueSussex · 12/01/2021 16:28

Well I live on the South Coast and have always done this Blush

Coats, boots, jumpers, thicker clothes go up in the loft. Down comes cotton dresses, sandals, etc

It's lovely as you forget about half of it - well I do anyway.

Disclaimer: I have far too many clothes

CorianderBee · 12/01/2021 16:29

No we don't have room. We have a wardrobe each and if it doesn't fit you can't have it.

LooneyLovefood · 12/01/2021 16:30

I don't have enough clothes to warrant putting anything away at the end of a season. Aside from the obvious sun dresses, sandals and hats/gloves etc I'd say I wear pretty much the same wardrobe year round but just add leggings/tights/cardigan/vest to dresses when it gets colder.

LadyofMisrule · 12/01/2021 16:33

We have beautiful but impractical antique bedroom furniture, so I rotate because not everything will fit. This year, since (a) we will not be going skiing, and (b) our house costs a fortune to heat and is still barely lukewarm, all the thermal base layer stuff has been put into general circulation to wear at home. I'm currently wearing merino under my pyjamas. All my office clothing has been boxed up and packed away; so have the uncomfortable work bras. :-)

Bluntness100 · 12/01/2021 16:34

I think this is generally only done when you don’t have enough space, otherwise why would you. You’d be sitting with half empty wardrobes and drawers.

DuzzyFuck · 12/01/2021 16:34

Yes I do this but down to space more than anything else. The most obviously seasonal stuff (Huge jumpers, winter boots, hats & scarves, shorts, sun dresses) go in my hard sided suitcase for the season they're not needed. I try and do a clear out during each changeover too; if I haven't worn it at all or much since I unpacked it, it goes.

RedRiverShore1 · 12/01/2021 16:34

I do because we have very high cupboards at the top of our wardrobes which are a pita because I have to get the small steps out to reach them so I swap some of the clothes round each spring and autumn to put out of season clothes in them

MimsyBorogroves · 12/01/2021 16:35

No, but DH's mum (SW) did this.

speakout · 12/01/2021 16:36

Yes, I do this.

I also have clothes stored away that only come out for hot holidays abroad- living in Scotland these don't get worn even in summer.
Too chilly.

I do this. Why depress yourself flicking through rails of pretty summer clothes when it's minus 4?! Keeps clutter to a minimum and it's easier to see and use more items.
All 'out out' items stayed packed away this year, not a heel or party frock in sight 😢

cdtaylornats · 12/01/2021 16:41

bring out the dresses sandals etc around Easter

Then stare at them until it's time to put them away in August.

whatswithtodaytoday · 12/01/2021 16:44

No, it's quite normal to need a jumper in August or a t-shirt in January in this country. I do move out of season clothes to the less accessible part of the wardrobe, but it would be so annoying to have to go burrowing in a storage box whenever the weather changes.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 12/01/2021 16:44

Yes I rotate my clothes 4 times a year, I've got clothes for most seasons but I've only really started doing this the past couple of years and it helps me keep an eye on what is coming into my wardrobe and what needs removing from my wardrobe. I'm looking forward to bringing my spring clothes out which include thinner knit jumpers and dresses etc.
I suffer from Raynauds so need a lot of thick jumpers and thermals in the winter and they take up a lot of room in my wardrobe.

Whenwillow · 12/01/2021 16:45

I'd love to go to Canada. Its on my bucket list @Pigtailsandall
Did you Google project 333? Changed my life! I love it Smile

Scaredykittycat · 12/01/2021 16:45

If I had the space I’d have them out all the time. I don’t so yes they get packed away and rotated.

DappledThings · 12/01/2021 16:46

I don't have anywhere enough clothes to necessitate this. My change to summer clothes mostly means taking the leggings off from under my skirt and removing a jumper. And swapping trainers for sandals.
