To ask if you rotate your clothes?

When I was small, my mum used to pack winter clothes away in the spring and bring out summer clothes - and vice versa in the fall. I'm from up north (way up north), so it made sense as we had proper snow gear etc.

My DH (from London) and friends (mainly Londoners too) think this is really odd behaviour. Obviously I have some stuff for all seasons but knitted dresses, thick scarves and woolly socks get boxed up around Easter, and strapless dresses and sandals brought out. It means everything gets looked at too in case it's no longer needed/liked, and aired outside. Is it just me?

(I've also just packed away most of my work clothes as I'm only going in once a week and a few smart outfits suffice. I like a fairly empty wardrobe)

No, though I do put my summer sports kit in the bottom of the wardrobe and vice versa. I don't have much really distinct summer wear that I wouldn't wear in the winter with for eg a long sleeved t under or a cardigan over.

Pigtailsandall · 12/01/2021 15:56

@Whenwillow

Also you say 'fall' so are you from the US?
Canadian. Well, half Canadian, and we lived there till I was 12. So I've never learned to say "autumn"!

Also hence the snow!

Yes. DH and I both do this.

We don’t have enough wardrobe space to keep everything out, and who needs long johns to hand in July, however unsummery it might be?

OzziePopPop · 12/01/2021 15:57

Yes, I do this, who’d want a summer dress in this weather??

CremeEggThief · 12/01/2021 15:58

I don't really, as I have enough space in my wardrobe and drawers for all of my clothes. However, I roughly divide them into warmer/cooler weather sides of the wardrobe and I have an 'out of season drawer' too.

MustBeThursday · 12/01/2021 15:59

I do it. I live in the midlands.

puffinkoala · 12/01/2021 15:59

My mum used to do this, but I have enough space (and few enough clothes) not to have to. Also a lot of my stuff I wear throughout the year like jeans - it's only really shorts that I hide at the bottom of the drawers until the summer.

Newstart20 · 12/01/2021 15:59

I do this as we really don't have much wardrobe space. I pack away winter stuff in April and bring out summer stuff then. I only put away really obvious stuff such as hats, xmas jumpers, thermals and flip-flops, beach dresses, shorts.

Pigtailsandall · 12/01/2021 15:59

@Bananalanacake

I thought you meant rotate as in when you have ironed them you put the clean Tshirts, tops at the bottom of the pile and wear the ones from the top. I do that, even with pants, thought it was normal.
Ah I do this with DH's stuff so they rotate but not my own. Otherwise he would just wear two things! (I do his laundry which is not very MN thing to do. But I find laundry folding oddly soothing)

Yes. I dress seasonally (all 4 seasons, not just warm/cold). I keep summer/spring clothes in the spare room and autumn/winter/all year clothes in my bedroom. Currently planning a dressing room though so hopefully I'll be able to section it better. Out of season shoes and gloves/hats etc live under the bed, I have a shelf that either has sun hats or scarves on. My Christmas jumpers have their own little section in DH's wardrobe Blush

NoSquirrels · 12/01/2021 16:02

We're actually short on storage space elsewhere (no loft storage, for instance), and I have a pretty minimal wardrobe so we keep it all in our wardrobes and drawers. When I have tried packing things up before, I can never find the optimum moment to rotate stuff - always reaching for the jumper when the weather turns, as it does in Britain, and end up feeling annoyed that I actually don't need the summery dress! My DH wears short-sleeved shirts and shorts year-round, so no point for him, either. The most I do is clear out the hats/gloves/scarves and heavy winter coats, and pack away obviously summery/wintry footwear.

beachlife9 · 12/01/2021 16:03

@Pigtailsandall I'm from London and I do this

onemouseplace · 12/01/2021 16:06

I do, but I'd say it's only about 20% of my wardrobe that gets put away - so high summer/ summer holiday clothes and then really thick jumpers/ winter boots.

I do have a sort out of the rest of my clothes at the same time, so it's quite a useful exercise.

tuttifuckinfruity · 12/01/2021 16:06

When you said way up north I assumed you meant the Highlands of Scotland. I see now you meant Canada.

And no, I don't do this, but it very much appeals to me. I would like to be organised enough to do this some day.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 12/01/2021 16:09

I do that, but only because of space reasons.

EarlGreywithLemon · 12/01/2021 16:10

Yes, we do that. We have very little wardrobe/drawer space but we do have under eaves storage, so it makes sense.
But I always find I have a lot more to “rotate” than my husband. For him it’s mostly a matter of putting winter coats and hats away.
It also makes sense because we always have some pesky moths flying around. If I leave winter stuff hanging in the cupboard untouched through the summer, I always find that it’s been chewed away Envy (not envy)

Yes this is me too, the really thin summer stuff and really thick winter stuff gets put away.
lollipoprainbow · 12/01/2021 16:12

Yes but only because I don't have space in my wardrobes for all my clothes so I have to rotate summer and winter stuff! Summer clothes generally come out May time and winter stuff September/October.

FrankskinnerscRoc · 12/01/2021 16:13

I do a capsule wardrobe so stuff gets packed away. Plus I keep a suitcase packed & ready to go should I need to dash off on last minute holz.

Pigtailsandall · 12/01/2021 16:13

Sorry, up north was a little tongue in cheek.

I do think clothes rotation does enable you to buy and accumulate a bit more than necessary than if you keep everything in plain sight...

drspouse · 12/01/2021 16:14

I do, and we do for the DCs to prevent them from wearing shorts in January or wooly jumpers on a hot August day (one is too young and one has SEN so they would do this).
DH doesn't but he only has about 3 jumpers and never wears shorts.

IamEarthymama · 12/01/2021 16:14

I certainly do and have done so all my life, as did my mother.
I like linen dresses and shorter skirts in the warmer months and snuggly long dresses and thicker jumpers and tights in the cold.

To my shame there wouldn't be room for all my winter coats to be out with my lighter raincoats and jackets. This last few months I haven't worn my wool coats as much as I would usually wear them when "going out".

I do love my clothes! It's a real treat to see them all when the bags come down in the Spring and Autumn. I always forget about some things and am pleased to see them.
I recycle things I haven't worn as much by passing them on to charity shops or eBay.

Watermama · 12/01/2021 16:15

yes but I live in Scotland, so change out coats, boots, warm outdoor wear alongside jumpers etc for all the family to free up space.

Lindylooboo · 12/01/2021 16:16

I do this. I love it. It's like getting a whole new wardrobe twice a year because I forget what I have. I live in the US in a snowy state, so my winter gear is bulky and I prefer not to see it in the summer. I hate snow and I don't want to be reminded of it in the glorious summer months.
