I'm not a woo person by nature, I'm more of a sceptic but there has been two or three occasions where I've encountered something unexplainable.

Do you believe in the paranormal?

YANBU - yes (please explain why)
YABU - no, it's a load of bollocks

Kendodd · 11/01/2021 20:14

What a load of bollocks, of course ghosts don't exist.

For those who think they do and have seen a ghost. What is it you think you've seen? Some dead person resurrected so they can walk around?

PoppiesinOctober · 11/01/2021 20:18

Yes I do.

A few years back, standing hunched over the breakfast bar in my grandparents empty house, (we were selling it) crying over something - not sure what, but I was very upset.

Then, I felt the strangest presence ever - like a hand was touching my lower back. Honest to God, I actually felt pressure on my lower back, so much so that it made me jump.

Very strange.

StormBaby · 11/01/2021 20:18

@Spied I too have had a couple of ‘non human’ encounters which were far scarier than the ghosts

2021isgoingtobeasshitas2020 · 11/01/2021 20:19

Yup. Had a few encounters. I was really shaken up with the last encounter I had. I have seen black figures before, but this time it was the full person. I then went to see who it could be and then they were gone.

anothernamereally · 11/01/2021 20:21

A couple of unexplained but not ghostly things - time slips maybe:

Looking up on a summers day sat in the garden, blue sky with a few small fluffy clouds, watching a plane that went behind a cloud and didn't emerge the other side - I was really expecting a report of a missing plane!

I drove through a rainbow- I know this isn't possible- still did though, my dc were in the car and we all commented how pretty the colours in the car were for a second or two.

Youseethethingis · 11/01/2021 20:21

Yes. Convinced I’ve felt the presence of my grandparents from time to time.
Regardless, here’s my main point: I cannot believe that my baby son just no longer exists. He has to exist somewhere or I don’t want to exist either.

Iwantitidontwantit · 11/01/2021 20:28

@Bump2021 - sorry this is long. The evening started with a bbq with my family and DP. Lots of ghost tales from them that I laughed and scoffed at (in a friendly way!) and made clear I didn't believe. Went to bed around midnight. Laying in bed on my side facing DP, just chatting. I had my hair up as it was hot still. I then felt something slide up the nape of neck and rest cupping the back of my head...and I mean really cupping. I didn't say anything about what was happening to DP as I couldn't make sense of what I was feeling. Also felt the worst feeling of dread i'd ever had. About 5 seconds later he stops talking and stares over my left shoulder right where I could feel the cupping. He looked shocked and went white. I asked him what he was looking at, he said nothing as didn't want to scare me. The pressure on the back of my head then went. As it did his eyes followed something down the length of my body. He then confessed he'd seen what loooked like a hand! At this point I still didn't say what I'd felt as I was too scared to admit it, would have made it real. We went to bed shortly after. Had what can only be described as the worst nights sleep of my life. I was boiling hot and absolutely drenched in sweat. It was like I'd poured a bucket of water on the bed. Every time I closed my eyes it felt like they snapped back open, like I could not keep them shut. Could not take my eyes off a spot by the curtains. Felt like there was something there, looking at me. In the morning told DP what i'd felt and he said also had a terrible night but was freezing cold. I know it sounds like bullshit and not very scary. If I'd read this from someone else I'd not believe. But it happened. I felt it. DP saw it. It was not a friendly spirit! Told my family the next day. At this point my dad confesses he kept feeling something touching his forehead in bed but didn't want to say and scare us all! Had to stay there another 3 nights after and got no sleep. When I came home I felt like whatever it was had followed me, as my house felt wrong. Me and DP don't live together but I made him stay for the next two weeks. The feeling did fade but if you offered me 1 million to stay in that place again I wouldnt take it! That completes my essay

SirChing · 11/01/2021 20:29

Yep I do believe and I have had a couple of experiences myself.

The thing is, out of the millions of people who have ever believed they saw a ghost, only one person has to be correct in order for them to be real. So on a balance of likelihood, I would say they probably do exist and we simply can't explain what they are yet.

Santaiscovidfree · 11/01/2021 20:35

My dgm always claimed she didn't believe in God. .
Years after she died I was The Designated Driver for a work trip to see a spiritualist. Wasn't having a reading as a load of tosh imo. New workmates so went along...
As it happened the reader had a space and they all jollied me into going in...
Where she told me my dgm was infact a religious woman (Confused) and proceeded to tell me great detail of her death. Aortic aneurysm, 4 % make it off the table and details of her beloved garden. She also mentioned I had lost a baby... About 10 years before and I swear I have never dwelled.... She described a ds who fitted our family spook description... I had to get someone to drive back. Shook me to bits... I had never made the connection at all.. Did make a lot of sense.. My dh heard him giggling and shout mamma a few years ago. Creeped me the hell out I can tell you..

frumpety · 11/01/2021 20:35

I have had one experience, it was odd , then annoying, rather than scary. It happened for an entire week though, not just a one off.

CoronaIsWatching · 11/01/2021 20:38

@MilkMoon

No. Once you factor in human tendencies to discern patterns/faces in things, tiredness, poor light, being half-awake or dozing, optical illusions, superstitions, hypnagogic and hypnagogic hallucination, suggestibility (especially when in groups of teenagers with an ouija board at night, or in someone already nervy or rattled, alone somewhere that frightens them), over-imaginative young children, superstitions, a liking for a ‘good story’,and a desperate human desire to believe in life after death, that pretty much covers it.
This. But I still love a good woo thread!
TaraR2020 · 11/01/2021 20:41

I voted YANBU but I'm not sure about the term 'paranormal'.

I think there are things we've not yet been able to scientifically explain and I've had a few odd, unexplainable experiences.

Love hearing about the Unexplained and I'd love ghosts to be real, but I'm generally a sceptic.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 11/01/2021 20:43

Ghosts like wispy spooky things , probably not . Things we cant explain ....hmmm definitely.
I lost my Italian grandma when DS was 3 , a few months later we were just coming downstairs after his bath and I was thinking about her, a strong memory that was really making me feel sad. As we walked down the stairs ds in his sweet little toddler voice just said " bye nonna " out of nowhere. I didnt feel spooked, I felt like as if she was watching us .

sadcatdiary · 11/01/2021 20:45

I believe in miracoils.

BanditoShipman · 11/01/2021 20:45

@Robbybobtail

I’ve never seen anything myself however - my best friend, who happens to be the most sensible, normal, pragmatic person in the world moved into her dh’s mums house a few years back, after the dm had died. It’s a lovely house but bf just didn’t feel comfortable there, understandable of course but she couldn’t shake the feeling that her Mil’s presence was somehow still in the house and it would never feel like home. She decided to go to a highly recommended psychic to see if she picked up on anything or to try and set her nerves at rest. Had never been to one before and she was highly sceptical but felt she had to do something as it was starting to affect her relationship. She gave a fake name over the phone and the lady lived a good drive away, so no way the woman knew anything about her. As soon as she had started the psychic said “I know you said your name is Annie (I’m giving fake names of course) but I have your MIL here and she says your name is Lucy”!!! She then went on to say some completely random stuff that no one could have ever guessed, one of which was “and MIL says to tell you it’s ok, you can throw away those old floral curtains”! Bf was completely gobsmacked as she had only been saying to her friends how she felt guilty getting rid of stuff, especially the floral curtains that had been in the living room as she knew her MIL had spent a lot of money on them!

Although I’ve never believed in stuff like this I do believe my friend 100% - I’ve known her since we were babies and she is just not the kind of person to lie or make up stories.

They actually sold the house last year mainly due to my bf still never feeling comfortable there!

But this is a contradiction, if she was really the most ‘sensible, normal, pragmatic person in the world’, she would never have gone to see a psychic!!
Spied · 11/01/2021 20:50

My strange experience with a strange creature happened in my halls of residence when I was at University.
I went to lock my bedroom door one evening and as I did I felt a tremendous force trying to open it ( I was alone in the hall, hadn't been drinking and wasn't overly tired/stressed). Anyway, I wasn't strong enough to close the door and as I gave-,in to the force a strange dark creature with red glowing eyes ( I kid you not) dog sized but pretty sure two legged ran into my bedroom and towards my open wardrobe and disappeared inside.
I was hysterical and I ran out closing the door behind me and spent the night in the communal kitchen, alone and terrified.
The next day I summoned the courage to go to my room. Opened the door and wedged it open, creeping inside. I was beyond terrified but I needed to go in to my room to get my belongings and phone etc.
I could not see or hear anything and everything was as I left it.
I emptied my wardrobe and there was nothing there. Window was closed and there was no way out but this thing had gone.

littlepeas · 11/01/2021 20:50

I’m open minded. I think there is a lot still to be discovered about our world (and the universe).

SirChing · 11/01/2021 20:51

The thing with psychics/mediums (the ones who truly believe they are and don't do readings for people for money or anything), are they hearing/seeing dead people or are the able to somehow read the mind of others?

I read somewhere in a "woo" book, that mediums are actually being fooled by demons, who present as dead people, in order to convince others to believe in the occult. But that supposes that demons are real of course, which is a whole different Avenue of paranormal.

OliverBabish · 11/01/2021 20:53

I voted YANBU because I think there are things we don’t understand, but I’m not sure I’d call them ghosts

Always makes me laugh when I think of what I saw on here once - how come it’s never a girl from the 2000s in a Britney T-shirt? Why is it always gotta be a Victorian chick in a grey dress

Spied · 11/01/2021 20:55

@StormBaby
Please tell.
( I've rushed my story- but you get gist.
I did tell it fully on a thread a year or so ago)

SirChing · 11/01/2021 20:57

@OliverBabish A poster on here once mentioned a friend who had the ghost of a lady wearing a tracksuit, who walked upstairs constantly carrying a laundry basket.

The most depressing ghost I have ever heard of!

Buttonmoonb4tea · 11/01/2021 20:57

@StormBaby I think I've read your previous post. We're you the only one in the halls, was it term break or something?

MsJinks · 11/01/2021 20:58

I can’t believe all life that has ever been just continues forever, or my own (scary thought). However, I don’t disbelieve people who have experiences either, and I do think some people can see things about people, or the future, that most can’t. I’ve felt a tap on my shoulder and seen a clock fly off a wall myself - both these things can be explained I know, however both could also have appeared to be linked to a warning on an issue with very, very high energy living people - separate incidents, times, people. I wonder if their own energy caused these things at times. I do think there is energy that is left somehow after death as well, so some imprints such as the loop ghosts, or some sense of the person - not the person themselves’living’ as a ghost, happen. My physics is pretty dire but I believe energy itself never dies, so this makes some sense to me even if I can’t explain it well. There is so much we don’t know yet and whilst we lump all inexplicable incidents as having to be either ghosts or ‘our mind’ I think there is a lot more understanding to come that will identify differing incidents in many different ways not just has to be a ghost or has to be a mind trip . Do love these threads, though never really conclude what I believe.

Buttonmoonb4tea · 11/01/2021 20:59

Sorry my previous post was for @Spied

Snaketime · 11/01/2021 21:01

I believe. I have had many encounters.
