AIBU to think 80% furlough pay should be topped up ?

Ok I have Nc’d for this. I’m not sure if how I’m feeling is justified or not and would appreciate opinions.

Firstly can I say I totally understand in many many ways I am lucky to still have a job. People are going through so much worse, and I really hope I don’t sound entitled/ungrateful but I’m just panicking and fed up as this all came totally out of the blue today.

I work for a small charity, only 8 staff and 300 volunteers. I love the place and what we do. Work wise I’ve never been happier. I don’t get paid much - £20k and I turned down a £5k pay rise in September deferring it until next August when my youngest leaves school and any extra help I get from the government ends. I thought this would help save the charity money. I do really care about the place.

I was briefly furloughed on full pay last March for 6 weeks but otherwise have luckily continued to work throughout. And I work hard, really hard because I love it and I want to. I do 15-20 more hours a week than I’m paid for. I don’t mind low pay or long hours at all but I guess I need to feel valued ? And I have up til now.

This morning my boss rang and told me as of today I am going to be fully furloughed at 80% pay. The charity aren’t going to top it up.

This means over £300 a month less pay. Things are already really tight financially here. I have an 18yr old 6th former and a 20yr old who’s not going back to University this term and it makes a huge difference to my food bills. We don’t really have any spare money each month. So I’m feeling scared about how we’re going to manage. I get no help from their dad and he hasn’t had contact with them in 4 years. I just feel so responsible for everything and our belts are so tight already I don’t know what to do. I just keep crying today.

The reason why I’m pissed off is the section I’m in charge of, managed to take £80k over budget despite the chaos of the last year. It’s rare I blow my own trumpet but I put everything into achieving that. So I keep being told we actually have ‘excess funds’ because they weren’t expecting me to do so well. They’re spending £10k on non vital improvements this month alone.

I’ve offered to use all my holiday (18 days from last year which i never got a chance to take and 25 days this year) so that I could still get paid the same - but apparently it doesn’t work like that.
I know I’m just feeling scared today so don’t know if I’m being entitled / unfair or whatever. I guess knowing they have more than enough to top the pay up, but are choosing not to makes me feel unvalued and a bit shit.

So AIBU thinking they could have topped up the 20% ?

However cruel this may sound, 80% of your salary is damn good going compared to a hell of a lot of other people.

RaspberryCoulis · 11/01/2021 14:58

You seriously expect 100% of your salary for sitting at home doing nothing?

redheadwitch · 11/01/2021 14:59

You need to demand an urgent appraisal and get that salary increase you are due. That way you will be getting 80% of the increased salary and it may even you out in terms of monthly income.

However in terms of furlough; no, I don't agree they should be topping you up again. 80% to sit at home and no nothing is a good gig.

alienspiderbee · 11/01/2021 15:00

This seems like madness to me, never forget it's a business relationship. As you've now found out, they'll protect their interests so you need to look out for yourself.

BornIn78 · 11/01/2021 15:00

You sound like a real martyr. Who even turns down a 5K payrise when they already don't have any spare money each month? You are a fool.

YABU.

Witchend · 11/01/2021 15:03

I suspect turning down the £5k increase made them think that you didn't need the money.

And ask the university dc for money from his loan to pay for food.

Mammyloveswine · 11/01/2021 15:03

Your eldest 2 need to get jobs and contribute.., I imagine supermarkets etc are hiring? Or takeaways?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/01/2021 15:04

I'm not sure I understand: you turned down the pay rise because you wanted to save the charity money but now want them to top your pay up to 100% now they are trying to save money in a financially precarious time by furloughing you?

MangoMask · 11/01/2021 15:06

KaptainKaveman - No of course I don’t think you’re being cruel. It’s just come as a total shock today as I had no idea I’d be furloughed. I really do understand how much worse other people have it.
RaspberryCoulis - I’d much prefer to be at work and thought I would be tbh. I would try and get another job (anything) to make up the difference but I don’t think I’m allowed to. I don’t even think I can volunteer anywhere whilst on furlough but I’m going to look into that. Last thing I want to do is be sitting around at home.

And 5 comments in we gave the you're a martyr comment.

OP you're not allowed to do anything nice on mumsnet without being a martyr. Sounds like you turned the pay rise down as with gov help you'd be no better off but it would save the charity money?

I think it rubs people up the wrong way when they might not have a job or are doing loads of work in a non furloughed role. I also think people on here assume everyone can easily save the difference on on not buying lunches at work and in not paying travel expenses. How much will you save there?

Is you 20 year old working? Could they contribute? If also advice pursuing your DCs dad via cms for what you're owed.

HermioneWeasley · 11/01/2021 15:08

Surely with 2 young adults in the house and you being free 24/7, between you, you can earn £300 in a month? Parcel delivery, cleaning, taking in ironing, care work, supermarkets?

Totallycluelessoverhere · 11/01/2021 15:08

If your university child is staying at home then he has his loan to cover the cost of food and living costs, same as if he had gone back to uni.
80% is pretty generous seeing as people on furlough don’t need to spend anything on travel to get to to work or need any work clothing etc

BornIn78 · 11/01/2021 15:10

OP you're not allowed to do anything nice on mumsnet without being a martyr

There's being nice, and then there's turning down a 25% payrise despite voluntarily working an extra 15-20 hours a week unpaid, while having absolutely no spare money each month. That's not "nice" it's bloody stupid.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 11/01/2021 15:10

you turned down 5K payrise, are you insane?

Godimabitch · 11/01/2021 15:10

80% of your salary for not working is pretty damn good!
You've got two other working age people in your home who are also capable of understanding money is tight and not to be gluttons.

If we had to top up furlough to 100% we'd just sack them instead. I cant afford to pay people to sit at home. When you furlough someone you lose money anyway since the whole point of employing someone is for them to earn you money, so dont expect special treatment for earning them money, that's the whole point. If you're not working, you're not earning them money, but you're still getting 80% of your pay.

HeyMister · 11/01/2021 15:12

How frustrating for you. I know people who are getting that top up, hate their jobs and happy to be sat at home. Annoys me! You deserve the top up. You sound so passionate about what you do for work and I'm sorry this has put you in an awful position financially.
Is there anything you or your kids can sell that you no longer need/use?

Godimabitch · 11/01/2021 15:13

As far as turning down a pay rise so you can keep claiming benefits goes... well that wont have reflected well on you at all and was a stupid decision.

Robbybobtail · 11/01/2021 15:14

Taking in ironing

I wondered how long til someone said this - bingo on the first page!

fiorentina · 11/01/2021 15:16

As a charity they are subject to tighter furlough rules, I am sure they’ve checked that they can furlough you, but they may have to justify any making up of the 20%. They shouldn’t stop you getting employment elsewhere though during furlough.

Have them adamantly refused part time furlough, can you propose an alternative?

schmockdown · 11/01/2021 15:16

Turk g down the oat rose was very poor judgement.

allmycats · 11/01/2021 15:16

Don't be greedy.

MangoMask · 11/01/2021 15:17

Plussizejumpsuit - That’s exactly it re turning down the pay rise. I wasn’t trying to be a martyr just trying to do the right thing. I don’t mind not having much money because I love my job.
I was just feeling shocked and worried but it looks like I’m being unfair.

Does anyone know if you are allowed to do other paid work if you’re getting furlough pay ? I was told not but maybe I’m wrong on that as well.

I do appreciate the feedback though. I don’t mean to be ungrateful for what I’ve got.

I'm the main earner by 3x DH - work for a very large multinational professional company that hasn't taken a hit finances wise from what I can on the latest forecasts ....I was furloughed with no top up. Our household income more than HALVED and we lost over £2k a month

Why can't your 18 year old and 20 year old help out as adults??

Was turning down the £5k pay rise a tax/benefit fiddle????? If so it's bitten you on the arse!

Didiusfalco · 11/01/2021 15:17

You shouldn’t have turned down the pay rise 🤦‍♀️. I understand because I’ve taken a similar approach to work and been burned before, you need to start seeing it as it is, which is a business (yes, I know technically they are a charity but they run on the same principle). With regards to the furlough, I think you technically have to agree to it. It might be worth laying your cards on the table and explaining your situation. If you are a good employee and it’s a small team there may be some leeway for you to carry on working somehow.

BornIn78 · 11/01/2021 15:18

Yes you are allowed to find other paid work while on furlough.
