Scrolling through dog adverts and I came across this

www.pets4homes.co.uk/classifieds/2942042-visual-fluffys-french-bulldog-kc-puppies-bedlington.html#

Is this a joke or a typo? The description says it’s a very very rare kind of dog, but seriously?

YANBU - ridiculous price for a dog ?

YABU- This dog is worth it?

@Babyroobs

Poor dog - a life kept pregnant.
Do you drink milk?
Peacocking · 12/01/2021 01:38

I know someone that bought a 15k puppy. A tibitian (sp?) mastiff. I'm very used to animals and have been a dog groomer in the past, but this dog is fucking terrifying and gives me the chills. 15k worth of potential killing machine as far as I'm concerned.

Why does it give you chills? Is it aggressive? My friend has a 13yr old cane corso which is an Italian Mastiff. He's huge and they're often used as guard or enforcement dogs so he can look intimidating but they've trained him from 10 weeks old and he is the most well behaved, affectionate and gentle dog. And I don't like dogs tbh!

The most aggressive dogs I've ever known were a poorly trained chihuahua who left me with a nasty scar and a brown lab who hated children (rescue, presume a difficult history). This was only discovered by accident but the behaviour was consistent: see child and attack. Not warn, not become fearful, attack.

It's not breed is it? It's training or experience.

15k for a dog is ridiculous though.

GooodMythicalMorning · 12/01/2021 15:42

I'll say it again. Threatening someone because of the breed of their dog is not on! You make yourself sound ridiculous. You no nothing about why someone owns a certain dog or how. Now pipe down unless you have something sensible to say as threatening violence is not on.

QuestionableMouse · 12/01/2021 16:18
@questionablemouse just because an experienced top event horse would be a lot more than that. A potential decent event horse could be that much before they've done much, but a successful top eventer would be an awful lot more. Unless it was ancient. If she brought it on herself and did the top eventing, she must have bought it before it was a top eventer. Anyway, it's not relevant and now I'm off to search for event horses I can't afford....
Please keep telling me that I'm wrong. 🙄

I said not much more than the 17.5k not that figure exactly. There's at least three horses in the same price range on Horse quest right now.

Suzi888 · 12/01/2021 16:20

Sad poor dog.

Blacktothepink · 12/01/2021 16:39

Disgusting 😡

Yes and no.

Some breeds have been selectively bred for aggression, and for independence. They are often very powerful breeds, too, because they have been bred either to fight or to protect herds of stock fro wolves and bears.

A large, aggressive independent doglike this (eg caucasian ovcharka) needs careful handling and training - it's to to say they can't be good, safe family dogs, but they HAVE to be properly trained and kept under control, because they are big and strong enough to kill.

I know what @Peacocking means - sometimes you get a vibe of a particular dog, or breed, and you just aren't comfortable with it. I'm experienced and confident with dogs, and personally, I'd always trust my gut.

The only breed I'd put a blanket ban on myself (in the sense that I'd NEVER consider keeping one - not that I'd want to stop other people from having if they can cope with them) is an akita.

They are stunningly beautiful dogs, but the three I have known well have been aggressive and unreliable with people and other dogs. Maybe bad breeding - I don't know - but it's put me right off the breed.

@Plussizejumpsuit

I'd like to get a kitten after my cat died. My existing cat would likely only accept a kitten rather than an adult. So just did a quick search. There are just regular moggies on there for 200 to 600 pounds! Wtf?! I don't think breeding is ethical so I'd only ever buy a moggie anyway and all cats are lovely. My point is this is extortionate!

Really makes me worry if people are just doing this for loads of cash. And therfore what's the welfare like?

I've just got another one after losing my old girl. I also saw ridiculous prices for moggies.

I contacted our local rescue and adopted a gorgeous 6 month old moggy who was given up by the previous owner who had paid £300 for her!

My adoption fee? £65!

Prices are mad for pups at the moment but the problem is if they price them "properly" people will buy them to sell them on. To protect the puppy's best interests breeders are having to bring their prices in line with the unscrupulous people that would otherwise profit. We've spoken to breeders who admit feeling terrible about it so have actually decided to not breed this year.

SophieDahling · 12/01/2021 22:55

Sure, dogs are cute. My DC are desperate for one. But I cannot get over the ethics of dog breeding and ownership. So many otherwise decent people are happy to buy puppies, remove them from their mothers in full knowledge that the mum was bred for money and will be bred time and again - for money. French bulldogs are common where I am, every time I see one I silently judge the owner.

Imagine those female dogs were humans. Bought and sold to provide offspring for the wealthy.

Snowvid19 · 12/01/2021 22:57

I’m under the impression that purebred fluffy french bulldogs are incredibly rare and do attract prices like this, even pre-covid puppy prices.

Tehmina23 · 12/01/2021 23:08

I don't understand why people pay so much money for expensive dogs & cats. I suppose you pay for a certain breed & for the temperament of that breed.
I definitely prefer rescue pets as I like a challenge...

My last cat was reduced to £25 by the RSPCA- she was almost feral & unsocialised & difficult to home so they were happy when I came along.
She was a beautiful long haired black cat who grew to be affectionate yet still feisty, she was a great pet for ten years before she sadly got cancer.

My current cat is a very nervous pretty black & white long haired cat cost £70 from Cats Protection. It's taken nearly 3 years to get her to sit on my lap! But she's so sweet.

My sister bought an exotic Persian kitten with a long pedigree from Pets4Homes for £500 & he only lived 4 years tragically.
He had every health problem an exotic Persian can have including breathing difficulties, stomach problems, eating issues, problems keeping his face clean, not liking being brushed daily, and sadly heart failure which he died suddenly from.
My sister was devastated as he was such a loving pet.

SunsetSenora · 12/01/2021 23:12

A friend of mine in San Francisco told me a woman got mugged recently for her puppy. Left her jewellery, wallet and other dog, just took the French Bulldog puppy at gunpoint and ran.

ShowOfHands · 13/01/2021 10:10

@SchadenfreudePersonified our neighbour has an Akita, beautiful but needs a LOT of stimulation. I know what you mean about different breeds and reasons for breeding but wondered what it was about the dog mentioned by the pp, if it simply was a breed issue or an individual dog issue.

VickyEadieofThigh · 13/01/2021 11:05

Indeed but not all rescue animals are a challenge - many just need a home.

We're on our 3rd rescue dog - we specifically adopt older dogs because they're hard for the charities to rehome and we feel we can help more dogs this way.

Our latest came from a small, entirely volunteer-run charity which takes dogs from the council pounds. He was about 11 when we took him and it's clear that he'd had a loving home previously (we think he was owned from a puppy and owner eventually became too ill - or died) because he's just perfect. He's deaf - but that's absolutely no problem (we use sign language with him) and bonus - he hardly ever barks!

I know puppies and kittens are lovely but the puppies take masses of training, especially toilet training. What's more, as others have indicated, the issues of the puppy breeding 'trade' are increasingly disturbing and dog theft of the 'desirable' breeds/cross-breeds is rife.

I wish more people would consider rescue dogs.

Tehmina23 · 13/01/2021 11:58

@VickyEadieofThigh yes my dad had 3 rescue cats & they weren't a challenge were just normal cats!
I knew my Millie would be feral but I thought my current cat would not be a challenge- how wrong I was... she's the most nervous cat you could ever meet.

Yes - I agree.

It's a dreadful thing to condemn a breed because of an individual (possibly badly bred dog), and I know I've done it in my own mind with akitas.

There are some breeds though which are very challenging and need owners who know what they are doing (and maybe are physically strong enough!). Sadly, these are the breeds which often attract idiots who want something a "bit different".

Mydogisagentleman · 13/01/2021 12:26

Ridiculous amount of money and she is going to have an awful life.
Our Bedlington is the light of my life. It took me 18 months to get him, I thoroughly researched the breed and eventually got him. They are prone to copper toxicosis due to shoddy breeding.
I was desperate and contacted a few advertisers from that pet site. Not one could offer me proof that the parents had been genetically screened so I walked away.

InsertRudeWord · 13/01/2021 12:58

That's awful. I think the novelty of puppies is waning now that people are faced with winter and adolescent dogs, so I hope things go back to normal now and fewer people will buy as a fad.

KenAdams · 13/01/2021 13:51

@VickyEadieofThigh - add to that "and I paid shitloads for it, so now I'll sell my 7 month old dog for £2k to recouperate my costs. Oh, and it's not neutered, so happy breeding puppy farmers" and you're spot on.

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 13/01/2021 13:58

We adopted two greyhounds over lockdown . £125 each and both lovely dogs with fantastic temperaments. £15k is ludicrous. I imagine that price will keep reducing over coming days

Santaiscovidfree · 13/01/2021 15:00

Oo pointy hounds you say? Proof or you lie!!. Grin

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 13/01/2021 15:46

I adore greyhounds - they're invariably lovely natured dogs. Too many of them end up in rescue centres.
