Group on FB

So I joined a group of women on FB. To support each other during lockdown and generally have a chat and a nice time online. Ater a week or so the admin changed a photo of the group to one with 5 women holding hands, the pic was taken from back, so no faces. IT was a painting or so from 50's I think or could've been done in retro style. I pointed out that the picture was not inclusive as it was only showing white women and didn't have other women of colour or ethnic minorities. I got a lot of abuse back. Was I wrong? I am a bit shocked and disheartened that in 2021 I had to raise this and no one really was bothered and nearly all the women asked me to shut up and not talk about it

@Burnthurst187

Well that won’t help people in the long term.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 18:43

@AwaAnBileYerHeid but it wasnt a photo of black women. How do you know how I would have reacted?!!

Not fb but I’m part of a large WhatsApp group of mums from school. If this was suggested everyone would immediately say omg I’m so sorry I didn’t think about that, let’s change the picture to something else. . . Because they’re not twats!

I’m sure there would be some very discreet eye rolling from the odd member but to outright have a go at you for this - not nice people

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 18:44

@Burnthurst187 I did leave. However its always good to speak first and make your voice heard. I thought it was not the right photo so I said so. They ganged up against me, so I left

Also anyone who thinks the OP is ridiculous but also thinks the events in America last week were awful - have a long think. This knee jerk anger at someone suggesting inclusivity and diversity in this country is worrying

TheFuckingDogs · 10/01/2021 18:47

OP you’re not not not unreasonable

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 18:47

:blueangel19 again, I said that the photo was not a correct representation of the group. Thats all. If that is all that it takes to piss people off, then fine! I just think that its easy for people to just brush difficult topics under he rug and not talk about it.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 18:48

@TheFuckingDogs thanks

What is the name of the group in FB?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 18:51

@OverTheRainbow88 its easy to find a more inclusive photo. There were plenty of choices as well, posted by one other lady. However, the majority just jumped on me for saying that the photos will all 5 white women wasnt inclusive

Virtue signalling at it’s finest 🤗

@OhCaptain no idea what you are trying to read

I'm in a hobby type group on FB and the exact same issue was raised ( not by me ) but I think it's a fair point actually. Surely a group identifier pic should relate to the people who are in the group?

@sst1234 I am really interested in knowing how, I, in this case of merely pointing out that the photo wasnt inclusive, been self promoting?!! Mind boggling.

Oh, I have a fair inkling...

MargotMoon · 10/01/2021 18:57

Fucking hell OP, I think the responses to this post demonstrate quite neatly the point you are making. What a pile-on. Good for you for saying something, not that you should have had to, representation is not that difficult

Oblomov20 · 10/01/2021 18:59

you would have really got my hackles up by complaining about racism where there was none. I'd be avoiding you in the group from now on.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 19:00

@FreshFreesias thanks not

No one has a problem with someone suggesting inclusivity and diversity. What they do have a problem with is someone creating such a drama out of....what exactly? Does every photo from now on need a token person included, whether that be black, white, disabled etc?

@AwaAnBileYerHeid take 2 to clap, I raised the topic. I was jumped upon by the other women. So, please. I didnt do anything other than let them why I thought the photo was not right. Sorry to expect a bit of decency in 2021 and have a photo that represents the group as a whole.

OP posts:
AwaAnBileYerHeid · 10/01/2021 19:02

And OP, you never really answered my question....how would you react if it was a photo of 5 black women? Would you have been jumping up and down that there were no white folk? No one with overt religious wear ie headscarves?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 19:05

@MargotMoon thanks, it does boil my blood that a simple request can blow up in such a way. Many people dont think its wrong here. I am really surprised. 90% of the women in the group didnt think the photo was wrong. Ah well.
