Group on FB

So I joined a group of women on FB. To support each other during lockdown and generally have a chat and a nice time online. Ater a week or so the admin changed a photo of the group to one with 5 women holding hands, the pic was taken from back, so no faces. IT was a painting or so from 50's I think or could've been done in retro style. I pointed out that the picture was not inclusive as it was only showing white women and didn't have other women of colour or ethnic minorities. I got a lot of abuse back. Was I wrong? I am a bit shocked and disheartened that in 2021 I had to raise this and no one really was bothered and nearly all the women asked me to shut up and not talk about it

@Gingerwhinger0 there were other photos available, the other posters, the not so nasty one, did offer suggestions.

If it’s the group I’m thinking of the photo you can’t even tell if all the women are white!

By that token it should also include a person in a wheelchair since there are probably some disabled group members. And a transwoman because they should be represented as well. And it should probably also include a man because it’s sexist to say they can’t join a support group. It’s impossible to find a picture that represents everyone, nor can you expect unpaid volunteers to fanny about looking for an image that suits you. If it was something that actually impacted on your life I’d be right behind you in demanding equality and diversity, but at the end of the day it’s just a photo on Facebook?

If it’s from the back can you tell that they’re all white women? Are they naked or something?

I don’t think YABU to point it out. But I suppose your tone might have affected the answers you got. You snapped at @WorraLiberty for literally asking you a question after all!

Disabled doesn't necessarily equals wheelchair though does it? And the op clarified there were other photos that could have been used.

They're not excluding ethnic minorities though are they. They just don't have POC in a picture.

And where does it end? Do the admins have to do an audit of the ethnicity of all their members and have one woman per ethnicity in the profile picture? They'd probably have to get that commissioned. Because having a token WOC to show "hey we're diverse in here" is just as insulting, if not more, than having a stock picture of white women. These people are admins, it's not their job and their not held to some equality commission.

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows I have mentioned many times, other photos were suggested, but not used! They just chose that 1 photo of all white women. I get it that they are unpaid admins, I get that its just a groups. That still doesn't make it ok. Wouldve taken them just a few mins to change it to be more inclusive

But it's not inclusive unless it includes everyone. One WOC doesn't represent the many many none-white women on there.

If the backs are turned how do you k ow they're white women?

Hard to judge without seeing the offending photo.

It's a random pic of five women. Now if it had been 500 or even just 50, that consisted of only white women I might think it really inappropriate. A photo of 5 people is unlikely to be inclusive of every member or a random group. No one in a wheelchair? No one wearing a Hijab or a mitpachat? No one missing limbs? There are lots of people not represented. What about everyone else?
I do agree they handled it badly. There's far more tactful ways to say what they did.

Most people would just look at the photo and see a group of women

You making a mountain out of a molehill. You are finding a reason to create an issue.
