Group on FB

So I joined a group of women on FB. To support each other during lockdown and generally have a chat and a nice time online. Ater a week or so the admin changed a photo of the group to one with 5 women holding hands, the pic was taken from back, so no faces. IT was a painting or so from 50's I think or could've been done in retro style. I pointed out that the picture was not inclusive as it was only showing white women and didn't have other women of colour or ethnic minorities. I got a lot of abuse back. Was I wrong? I am a bit shocked and disheartened that in 2021 I had to raise this and no one really was bothered and nearly all the women asked me to shut up and not talk about it
@WorraLiberty How come you can talk and other have to shut up about racism?
I just wondered if you might answer my question, considering it's you who started the thread? Confused

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:25

@Gingerwhinger0 there were other photos available, the other posters, the not so nasty one, did offer suggestions.

If it’s the group I’m thinking of the photo you can’t even tell if all the women are white!

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:29

@CardoMondo not the one that you are thinking then, this one you can definitely tell

All I asked for was, an inclusive photo showing the diversity of the group
By that token it should also include a person in a wheelchair since there are probably some disabled group members. And a transwoman because they should be represented as well. And it should probably also include a man because it’s sexist to say they can’t join a support group. It’s impossible to find a picture that represents everyone, nor can you expect unpaid volunteers to fanny about looking for an image that suits you. If it was something that actually impacted on your life I’d be right behind you in demanding equality and diversity, but at the end of the day it’s just a photo on Facebook?

OhCaptain · 10/01/2021 14:30

If it’s from the back can you tell that they’re all white women? Are they naked or something?

Mamamia456 · 10/01/2021 14:30

Upload the photo OP so we can see it.

I agree
OhCaptain · 10/01/2021 14:31

Ah. X-post.

I don’t think YABU to point it out. But I suppose your tone might have affected the answers you got. You snapped at @WorraLiberty for literally asking you a question after all!

yellowmaoampinball · 10/01/2021 14:33

Disabled doesn't necessarily equals wheelchair though does it? And the op clarified there were other photos that could have been used.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/01/2021 14:33
@yellowmaoampinball there were other photos suggested, but this was the one chosen. Other women dont seem to think there is anything wrong in todays age to just exclude other women from ethnic minorities
.
They're not excluding ethnic minorities though are they. They just don't have POC in a picture.

And where does it end? Do the admins have to do an audit of the ethnicity of all their members and have one woman per ethnicity in the profile picture? They'd probably have to get that commissioned. Because having a token WOC to show "hey we're diverse in here" is just as insulting, if not more, than having a stock picture of white women. These people are admins, it's not their job and their not held to some equality commission.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:34

@OhCaptain I snapped as I am sick and tired of racism being brushed under the carpet every single time.

What are you on about?!

She asked if people actually asked you to shut up and stop talking about it it. That’s all she asked! Hmm

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/01/2021 14:35

Sorry, who's been racist?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:36

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows I have mentioned many times, other photos were suggested, but not used! They just chose that 1 photo of all white women. I get it that they are unpaid admins, I get that its just a groups. That still doesn't make it ok. Wouldve taken them just a few mins to change it to be more inclusive

They actually said, Can you shut up and not talk about it?

That ^^ was what I wrote.

You could try reading, instead of making up your own crap to suit your agenda.

WorraLiberty · 10/01/2021 14:39

Thank you @OhCaptain

I was beginning to think the OP has a weird ability to read posts no-one's actually written.

But it's not inclusive unless it includes everyone. One WOC doesn't represent the many many none-white women on there.

If the backs are turned how do you k ow they're white women?

notinthiseconomy · 10/01/2021 14:40

Hard to judge without seeing the offending photo.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:40

@WorraLiberty yes they did ask me to stop and not talk about it, as it was just a photo! And didnt bother anyone

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 10/01/2021 14:41

Ok

londongirl12 · 10/01/2021 14:42
Hmm
AvoidingNextdoorNeighbour · 10/01/2021 14:42

It's a random pic of five women. Now if it had been 500 or even just 50, that consisted of only white women I might think it really inappropriate. A photo of 5 people is unlikely to be inclusive of every member or a random group. No one in a wheelchair? No one wearing a Hijab or a mitpachat? No one missing limbs? There are lots of people not represented. What about everyone else?
I do agree they handled it badly. There's far more tactful ways to say what they did.

Most people would just look at the photo and see a group of women
