Group on FB

So I joined a group of women on FB. To support each other during lockdown and generally have a chat and a nice time online. Ater a week or so the admin changed a photo of the group to one with 5 women holding hands, the pic was taken from back, so no faces. IT was a painting or so from 50's I think or could've been done in retro style. I pointed out that the picture was not inclusive as it was only showing white women and didn't have other women of colour or ethnic minorities. I got a lot of abuse back. Was I wrong? I am a bit shocked and disheartened that in 2021 I had to raise this and no one really was bothered and nearly all the women asked me to shut up and not talk about it

So in a pandemic and thousands dying a week...does anyone really want to listen to you? Clearly the Fb didn't

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/01/2021 14:46

With respect OP if you were half as abrasive on the group as you're being here that's probably why they told you to shut up

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:46

@Normalmumandwife you could discuss other issues? I never said that the pandemic didnt exist?

OP posts:
UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 14:47

Amazing, most women do not see it as an issue.. Hmm

OP posts:
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/01/2021 14:51

Do you know what I see as an issue OP?

The fact this pandemic is seriously detrimental to women and more will be forced out of work than ever before. And no one cares.

1 in 5 women in the U.K. are raped. Convictions are at less than 1%. No one cares.

1 in 10 women are sexually assaulted. No one cares - in fact they're mostly accused of making it up.

1 in 4 are victims of domestic violence. No one cares - even at grass roots, you call the police after being hit by your husband and they tell you it's NBD.

The gender pay gap is as large as ever and not only does no one care, but people argue that it's a myth.

For WOC, the above stats on average are much worse.

Funnily enough I don't have the energy to get upset at trivial issues such as a Facebook picture.

sst1234 · 10/01/2021 14:52

OP, a picture on FB group is not going to solve racism and exclusivity. Sorry to use the cliche but you have fallen prey to the bustier signalling syndrome. Maybe spend your time beating the drum about things which really level the playing field, rather than words which and faux activism which looks good but achieves nothing but irritation.

sst1234 · 10/01/2021 14:52

*virtue signalling

That’s not very inclusive of you.

There could be trans women, trans men, non-binary people, intersex people and men posting on this thread.

OhCaptain · 10/01/2021 14:57

I said similar upthread. My guess is that’s exactly what happened.
sst1234 · 10/01/2021 14:58
@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows I have mentioned many times, other photos were suggested, but not used! They just chose that 1 photo of all white women. I get it that they are unpaid admins, I get that its just a groups. That still doesn't make it ok. Wouldve taken them just a few mins to change it to be more inclusive
OP are you BAME or do you just have white savior complex? Because most BAME people would money worked up about something like this, since most have to deal with real racism and worry more about than this nonsense.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 10/01/2021 15:00

@sst1234 thanks for that! I do belong to ethnic minority groups and have suffered from racism, hence decided to voice my opinion. I shouldn't have as I forgot no one really cares.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 10/01/2021 15:01

Jesus, reaching much? If it were a photo of 5 black women, would you have raised that as an issue in regards to lack of inclusivity? I think not.

That reads like “I’m white but don’t want to admit you’re right.” 🤣🤣🤣

It’s not that no one cares. I think you know that too. But inclusivity for BAME women is not going to be solved by these kind of empty gestures. That’s why it just annoys people because reducing inclusivity to these optics actually undermines the cause. It’s in authentic and disingenuous.
Exclusivity for BAME women starts when they are girls and their parents may not speak good English therefore not able to take interest in their education, communicate with teachers. It’s about what happens in healthcare for the same reasons. It starts when they don’t have high achieving role models to look up to. It is perpetuated in the workplace when they may not have the confidence to put themselves forward (true for women in general). How you change it is that as a woman - BAME or not, if you see a situation, you intervene subtly to break the hidden disadvantages. What you did, frankly just pisses people off for being vacuous and self promoting.

Staffy1 · 10/01/2021 15:11

Did you also complain that it was a group of women? Tell them they weren't very inclusive as there were no men?

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 10/01/2021 15:20

I shouldn't have as I forgot no one really cares

It's a huge leap to imply everyone who doesn't agree is uncaring & racist because they didn't like your suggestion.

Whammyyammy · 10/01/2021 15:22

Answer ridiculous, looking for issues to cause an issue...

SuperHighway · 10/01/2021 15:23
@WorraLiberty How come you can talk and other have to shut up about racism?
You think the admin is racist? Well surely you wouldn't want to be in the group anyway?

SmudgeButt · 10/01/2021 15:26

Completely reasonable to point it out IMHO. Maybe they intended to post something different every week or so? This week all white women, next week a mixed group, then a group wearing saris? I'd be fine with that.

We are having so many info things via email at work about WFH etc and one included a photo that shocked me - a family in the lounge, Dad working on his laptop, older teen son playing his guitar, younger teen son playing a video game & Mom with the hoover. I sent an email jokingly asking if it was meant to be retro or in an alternate universe. I got a response acknowledging that in retrospect they could see that it was just not right - particular as our company employs more women than men.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 10/01/2021 15:30
Confused
squeezeapplesmakejuice · 10/01/2021 15:34

Oh no! Why would you upset the group? I'm sure no harm was meant by the picture.

Heyahun · 10/01/2021 15:34

It’s fucking Facebook 😂

Just set up your own group if you need don’t like that one ffs

The drama

I actually think this was a reasonable request. No, of course you can’t necessarily find a photo that is inclusive of everybody, but if the group is open to a range of women from different backgrounds it it is reasonable to expect to have some variation in the sort of women being represented in the photograph.

The argument that it would be impossible to include everyone isn’t really a good excuse not to try and represent more than one of the different demographics within the group.

Iwonder08 · 10/01/2021 15:49

OP, I suggest not only the picture should include all the races and mixed race people, it must include at least one disabled person. Make sure it represents all the ages. It also needs to obvious from the pcitrue someone is bisexual/asexual/transgender or ideally all of it.

Or in short they are right, you are just looking for a drama.
There are plenty of ways our society manifests racism in various shapes and forms. Fb group photo is not one of them
