I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

@Thisseatisnotavailable not sure if you meant to tag me but I'd copied the ops reply to someone to say that person said they can cook.

FortunesFave · 10/01/2021 02:31

I agree! I know about three people who can genuinely cook. And I know a lot of people.

One man was full of how AMAZING his Bolognese was...bigged it up massively. It was bland as hell and he thought the addition of Worcestershire sauce made it stunning.

I didn't TELL him it was shit of course but it was. Others wham some cheese on top of a dish of meat and potato and think they're Gordon Ramsay.

Real cooking is a true art.

sazzysazz337 · 10/01/2021 02:32

You can literally put cheese on fecal matter and make it edible

You are a bit of a dick actually.
SquirtleSquad · 10/01/2021 02:33

@FortunesFave why didn't you tell him it could be improved? He'll never learn if he's not told!

Weird thread , if you get shit food in restaurants then your going to shit restaurants
Not once have you mentioned what you cook or what you consider good food
As something you might think is good I might think is total crap.
Def more than 3% of people can cook

LagunaBubbles · 10/01/2021 02:35

@fortunesfave do you go round eating at all these peoples houses then? As we all probably know a lot of people , we don't pop round them all for dinner.
Also you might not like his bolognaise because its not to your taste and someone might not like yours because its not to their taste

Blondiney · 10/01/2021 02:39

I'm no chef but I can read and follow a recipe, it's not difficult. During that first, terrifying lockdown I made a dish from scratch every afternoon - it completely absorbed me, taking my mind off everything else.

Still cooking, doubt I'll ever go back to ready meals. Being willing and able to properly feed myself without relying on supermarkets is probably the best thing to come out of all of this.

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 02:51

Ok my food for the next week (including lunches as we're all at home).

Sunday- Brunch: Bacon, sausage and duck eggs. Rosti using the leftover potatoes from last night. Roast tomatoes and mushrooms. Black pudding.

Dinner; Roast pheasant. Roast potatoes. Braised red cabbage. Roast parsnips. Port gravy.

Monday: Jerusalem artichoke soup for lunch with hm bread.

Dinner; Roast beetroot with smoked mackerel, potatoes with soured cream and dill, cucumber salad.

Tuesday; Lunch: Ribollita, ciabatta, cheese, green salad.

Dinner; slow-cooked brisket. Rice. Soured cream. Hm guacamole. Pico de gallo. Hm tacos.

I think the only bit from that I'd enjoy eating would be the ciabatta, cheese and green salad or the rice and guacamole. So roughly 97% of your menu I'd say "sounds terrible" but again that's sounds terrible to me.

Smallgoon · 10/01/2021 02:56

@Sparklesocks

That’s a very high stat you pulled out of your arse based on so very little.
Agreed
ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 02:57

Wednesday DS is making Irish stew.

Wow 😂

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 03:05

Thats not the most complicated menu and your out of touch financially if you think some of those ingredients are cheap for people to buy
Brunch- in my house we would call that a fry up

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 03:06

I'm not asking you to eat it.

And without being rude ciabatta , cheese and green salad is basically a cheese salad roll ? The soup part fair enough

Userzzz · 10/01/2021 03:07

It’s all personal preference so I find it strange that you judge other people’s cooking choices. Why do you care what other people cook? We all like different things. Why assume what you cook is the way it should be cooked? can’t imagine what you’re like in real life.

Sitt · 10/01/2021 03:09

That all sounds lovely, and I also have the time and money to prioritise preparing food like that, even with a toddler and a baby. I hate cooking but like the outcome so force myself to do it. I think we probably have more leftovers than you do so dishes tend to span more than one meal, which makes things easier.

SquirtleSquad · 10/01/2021 03:09

And we aren't asking you to eat our subpar terrible sounding food either, but you still chose to make this strange thread casting your judgements on 97% of us.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 03:11

How is your roast pheasent meal harder than most peoples midweek or sunday roast ? Why is that real food and cooking compared to roast lamb or beef or a nutroast

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 03:12

I want to know if the ciabatta OP lists was home made?
I love cooking home made breads.
Admittedly never tried making ciabatta yet.

Have made

  • loaves of bread
  • bread cakes
  • chapatis
  • rotis
  • parathas

Never tried making ciabatta from scratch though

NiceGerbil · 10/01/2021 03:14

Yeah this is rubbish.

IME the older generation can cook. My mum grew up when rationing was still a thing. She learnt to cook. Ditto my aunt.

Round here there are a lot of first and second generation immigrants from various countries. Food is a cultural thing. An important link. In general, food and cooking are important. Apologies for generalising but it's not unusual.

I can cook. DH can cook.

I'm not sure what you base your assumptions on tbh.

Where do you live?
