I'm going to say about 97% of people can't cook.

I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

You should start a youtube and Instagram account to change the nations eating habits. Joe wicks and Jamie oliver have alot to learn.

violetbunny · 10/01/2021 03:15

I get where you're coming from OP. The thing is though, for many people cooking just isn't a priority. They'd rather dedicate time and effort to other things. That doesn't mean it's shit, it's just what works for them, and it just means we are different.

For what it's worth, I like to eat nice food, and put a lot of thought into making sure we eat healthy, well cooked meals. I don't spend an age in the kitchen but I do make sure it tastes nice whatever it is.

DP on the other hand couldn't care less and if I wasn't around would subsist mainly on frozen food and Uber Eats. I mostly refuse to eat his cooking when he does attempt it, as he puts in the least effort possible and it shows. He just values food differently.

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 03:16

@Userzzz, I don't judge or care really. I'm an utter twat in real life.

I just want people to eat decent food. Because it's a pleasure.

OP posts:
Scbchl · 10/01/2021 03:18

Do you realise though that for you eatings a pleasure but for many foods just an energy source and other things are a pleasure not food.

NiceGerbil · 10/01/2021 03:18

Just saw the last post lol

Duck eggs
Pheasant

Posh ingredients don't mean you can cook.

A really good cook can make delicious food out of cheaper ingredients. That's a skill. And one that many people are utilising currently with job losses etc.

What did you want to get out of this thread, op?

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/01/2021 03:18

Bit of a snob then OP with that menu.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 10/01/2021 03:19

But if people enjoy the food they eat thats a pleasure to them . I would hate your duck egg as I don't like them but do like hen eggs and same with pheasent I don't like it at all but like a nice lamb shank or nicely cooked bit of beef.
People eat what they like and enjoy
My favourite is strogonoff but a lot of people don't like it .

Sitt · 10/01/2021 03:21

You can’t make people enjoy the things you do. Especially if they don’t have the same resources. It’s like insisting that people should always take bubble baths to keep clean instead of having quick showers “because it’s a pleasure”. Some people don’t agree, some people agree but don’t prioritise that, and some people can’t prioritise that

NiceGerbil · 10/01/2021 03:22

Yeah I think so.

It's not tricky to cook delicious food if you have lovely ingredients.

It's making lovely food when you only have some basic stuff that is a real skill.

I think OP is way off the mark tbh. And this is a strange thread.

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 03:22

It genuinely does make me sad when I read about rubbish food that people eat.

Not because they can't afford it.

Because they can't cook.

It makes me feel sad that the majority of people eat rubbish food. Life is short. Why feed yourself terrible things?

OP posts:
MeanWeedratStew · 10/01/2021 03:23

I do most of our weeknight meals in the slow cooker. I have three young children and a full-time job (we're not locked down in my part of the world, everyone is going to work as normal), and if I didn't make the dinner as part of my morning routine, I'd have to something really rushed in the evening. I make no apologies for cooking in a way that works for my family, and they clearly like it enough to eat it with minimal fuss. I agree with the PP who said that if your food "sweats to death" in a slow cooker, you're doing it wrong.

OP, you've made a lot of assumptions here, based only on your own experiences. Surely you knew that would get people's backs up?

Sitt · 10/01/2021 03:25

Many people never experience the joy of making their own clothes, perfectly made for them alone, like I do. Because they can’t knit and sew. I don’t feel sad about it, they all seem to be getting on fine. It’s lovely when someone does discover the same passion as me, but I don’t feel sad when they don’t.

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 03:26

Duck eggs are the same price as hen's eggs.

And pheasant is the same price as chicken.

OP posts:
Sitt · 10/01/2021 03:26

It’s really weird and controlling to want other people to cook and eat and prioritise their lives like you do

NiceGerbil · 10/01/2021 03:27

Shrike I don't get it.

What rubbish food are you sad about?

Also, some people don't see food as a big pleasure but a means to an end. They're not fussed. They have other things that give them pleasure.

You can't assume that everyone feels the same as you. And citing duck eggs and pheasant makes you sound like a bit of a dick.

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 03:29

And pheasant is the same price as chicken

I grew up in the countryside, I see pheasant as costing barely nothing if indeed anything lol

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 03:31

It makes me feel sad that the majority of people eat rubbish food

Who?
Who are you talking about?
Majority?
What are you basing this on?!
Confused

NiceGerbil · 10/01/2021 03:31

Pheasant is small, tricky to get the meat off, and easy to over cook.

Unless you're a poacher's wife it's not readily available in mainstream shops.

And I'm sure duck eggs are more expensive.

It's a pleasure to you, you twat. It's not a pleasure to everyone.

Pavit · 10/01/2021 03:32

Duck eggs are not the same price as chicken ones at my tesco, you can get more chicken eggs for cheaper.

Sitt · 10/01/2021 03:32

I was thinking the same Quaagars. we used to get them left on our doorstep usually in return for previous favours. But nice chicken isn’t cheap to buy anyway, so if it costs as much as chicken in supermarkets or butchers then that’s not really saying anything

LovePoppy · 10/01/2021 03:33

@ShrikeAttack

think the only bit from that I'd enjoy eating would be the ciabatta, cheese and green salad or the rice and guacamole. So roughly 97% of your menu I'd say "sounds terrible" but again that's sounds terribleto me.

I'm not asking you to eat it.

No, but you’re telling “97%” of us that our food is horrible.

At least own how pretentious you are.

WyfOfBathe · 10/01/2021 03:34

Most of what you make sounds terrible to me. We have different tastes. Should I feel sad for you too?

I can cook. In fact I can cook fairly complex things, thanks to my ex who was a chef. But, like you say, life is short. I don’t particularly enjoy cooking, so I don’t spend too much time on it. A decent jar of sauce on pasta tastes good to me, so I’m not going to waste my time making my own sauce when I could be doing something I enjoy.

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 03:36

@ShrikeAttack

Ok my food for the next week (including lunches as we're all at home).

Sunday- Brunch: Bacon, sausage and duck eggs. Rosti using the leftover potatoes from last night. Roast tomatoes and mushrooms. Black pudding.

Dinner; Roast pheasant. Roast potatoes. Braised red cabbage. Roast parsnips. Port gravy.

Monday: Jerusalem artichoke soup for lunch with hm bread.

Dinner; Roast beetroot with smoked mackerel, potatoes with soured cream and dill, cucumber salad.

Tuesday; Lunch: Ribollita, ciabatta, cheese, green salad.

Dinner; slow-cooked brisket. Rice. Soured cream. Hm guacamole. Pico de gallo. Hm tacos.

This seems to be just Sun-Tues not a week?
NiceGerbil · 10/01/2021 03:37

Round here there are loads of people whose parents came from overseas, or they have.

Food is an important part of most cultures.

I find it really odd that you seem to be overlooking that.

We have a reputation in the UK for being very open to cuisines from around the world, new ingredients etc.

Your attitude discards that diversity and variety.

I also maintain that it's easy to make nice food if you have good (expensive) ingredients. What is harder is producing tasty food when you are strapped for cash. That's real cooking. Forget the pheasant and duck eggs. Making the most of limited ingredients is where the real skill is at.
