I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

tisnotthedamnseason · 10/01/2021 00:57

@FamilyOfAliens

Biscuit I can cook you one of these?
😄😄
WorraLiberty · 10/01/2021 00:58

Is that you Nigella?

Quaagars · 10/01/2021 00:59

Well, that sounds like a figure plucked out of thin air if ever there was one, lol!
I cook.
From scratch.
Sometimes we have ready meals though that we just stick in the microwave, doesn't mean me or DH can't cook.
We both can do great homemade meals.
Sometimes we can't be arsed though as we're human Grin

OhCaptain · 10/01/2021 00:59

“Not because I’m a dick.”

🤣🤣🤣

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 10/01/2021 00:59

Meh. Sometimes I cook curry from scratch. Sometimes I cook something Chinese with egg fried rice. Or kedgeree. Or fish pie. Or spaghetti bolognese. Not sure how any of these meals would stand up against a genuine curry/Chinese meal/bolognese. I also don't care. They taste nice.
Sometimes I put breaded chicken and chips in the oven and cook them. Sometimes I chuck whatever we have in a pan and hope for the best.
My dc eat 99% of what I make without complaining. Occasionally they eat it and ask me not to make it again. Even more rarely they don't eat it at all.

EverydayImJuggling · 10/01/2021 00:59

Personally I find people who make a big fuss about food really boring. Most days I just want something fairly quick, easy and healthy that everyone on my family will eat. Occasionally, we have something more elaborate or enjoy something new (that’s what restaurants are for).

I don’t want to pour over cookbooks or hear people bore on about ingredients.

Sparklesocks · 10/01/2021 00:59

Maybe you should run a zoom cooking course for mumsnet OP? I’m sure the pot noodle scoffing bunch of us could learn so much from your expert ways.

I pulled that percentage from;

A) Stuff I have been fed.

B) Things I read.

C) Shit I have eaten in restaurants.

I can cook

But I don't

(I find it boring now, would rather eat a sandwich and watch Netflix)

Byllis · 10/01/2021 01:01

I know what you mean about unappetising recipes, op, but the statement is harsh for a few reasons. People may be cooking what they like, so as long as it's actually edible then they are able to cook, yes. Also, someone may not be very familiar with how to make a pasta sauce nicely, but may be a fantastic baker. Also, cooking for a family, which seems to be the sort of cooking you're talking about, isn't always the best arena for great skills as you're balancing a number of different priorities and tastes.

Is there some auto-generator for bizarre threads tonight?

Catty1720 · 10/01/2021 01:02

@ShrikeAttack do you use all your own sauces or jars?? I’m just curious I don’t think I’d know where to start I use shop brought but I still class it as I cook not restaurant style but I like to think I’m good at it.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/01/2021 01:02

So what do you cook in an average week and who are you feeding @ShrikeAttack

PamsterWheel · 10/01/2021 01:03

What do you cook OP?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/01/2021 01:03

Could you get any further up your own arse?

That's interesting, I've never eaten shit in a restaurant, are there specialist shit restaurants? Can you order solid shit, watery shit, loose shit.

OP I agree, I no longer eat at people's houses. I am honest I can cook about 4/5 meals from scratch that taste lovely, however I detest cooking. I find the process so boring, then there's the cleaning after when I'm full and I just want to relax. However, I have been invited to people's houses and they boast what great cooks they are and the food is just gross. I think people think they cook far better than they do.

tisnotthedamnseason · 10/01/2021 01:08

Sometimes I can't be arsed but other times I'll make a real effort. The other day I sliced my own cheese for my microwave burger.
Felt like fucking Nigel Slater, feeding my soul as well as my body. 😇

You're not a true Michelin star chef unless you toast the bun. It's the small details that count innit.

Frannibananni · 10/01/2021 01:08

Everyone has different tastes I think it’s a special kind of precious to assume everything you cook is going to be loved by everyone. I like vegetables in everything, salad with pasta and a white bread vegemite sandwich every now and then. I think I’m a good cook too.
