I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

So you are basing your nonsense purely on what you have eaten and what you have read. Wow, not just a dick but an ignorant one.

MooseBreath · 10/01/2021 01:09

I wouldn't put myself in the 3% best cooks in the world (how high on yourself must you be to do so!), but I don't throw random veg into chilli/pasta sauce, use jarred sauces, or make unappetizing meals. This is a site for people who are most often parents with children to feed. People who have picky eaters and vegetable-dodgers tend to share ideas on how to get their kids to eat a balanced diet. You won't be finding a lot of people on here who a) have time to make a Michelin-star-quality meal every night, or b) are feeding people who would eat such food.

YAB so U.

You have to like doing it though don't you. My dh likes to cook and makes some delicious things but they are still gone in a few minutes after hours of preparation. I just don't have the time or inclination to do this.

StealthRoast · 10/01/2021 01:10

Oh op Nigella must be quaking in her boots, why don’t you apply for the next series of Masterchef if you’re so good?

Also, do you have no life? I can’t imagine sitting there on a Saturday night worrying that millions of people can’t cook.

What is this really about?

tisnotthedamnseason · 10/01/2021 01:10

@NuniaBeeswax

"Sometimes I can't be arsed but other times I'll make a real effort. The other day I sliced my own cheese for my microwave burger. Felt like fucking Nigel Slater, feeding my soul as well as my body"

You're not a true Michelin star chef unless you toast the bun. It's the small details that count innit.

Of course, I'm not a savage!
Quaagars · 10/01/2021 01:10

D) From your arse

ZippedyDooDa · 10/01/2021 01:11

Please share your greater wisdom with us mere mortals OP - what do you cook and what should we all be cooking?

Catty1720 · 10/01/2021 01:12

@tisnotthedamnseason

Master chef here you come Grin
ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 01:12

I don't use jars at all @Catty1720.

I feed two adults and two teens. One has ASD and often spits stuff out (in good humour), but she'll always have a go and I honestly don't mind if it doesn't work for her. Which is why I'll occasionally get a McDs. I don't think there's bad food. I do think there's shit food.

Well I really don't want to because I find cooking so utterly boring. Why spend hours preparing something for it to be gone in 10 mins max!

StillMedusa · 10/01/2021 01:13

Well I've managed to get four kids to adulthood without them developing scurvy or diabetes... win win?
Some of us are simply not interested in perfecting recipes or faffing about for hours in the kitchen. I'm not.. yet manage to make simple, easy meals that cover the food groups nicely... my ideal last meal on earth would be jacket potato with cheese and salad... what is wrong with that?
Anecdotalyl, most of my colleagues who really love cooking and spend hours discussing recipes are also lifelong weightwatchers/slimming world attendees... coincidence?! I'm slim, healthy, vegetarian and couldn't give stuff about 'ingredients that go together'! Let me throw in my random veg and be happy!

Emeraldshamrock · 10/01/2021 01:13

Has the foodie thread upset you.

AreyouseriousClark · 10/01/2021 01:14

Eh? You don’t think there’s bad food, just shit food? I think shit food is pretty bad!!!

Well come on to fuck give us some recipes before I stew another veg!

QueenPawPaws · 10/01/2021 01:14

I think people cook to their taste and/or budget
So some people like baked beans in chilli, some people do it to bulk it out for budget reasons. Might not be to everyone's taste or authentic but if they and their family enjoy it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Made a cottage pie today that probably a lot of people would say was grim but it tasted really nice to me! So you can judge it was carrot/celery/onion fried off with minced beef, oxo, a tiny bit of marmite, mushrooms because they needed using up, red wine, tomato purée, mash with mustard and cheese on top

Some people might add peas or sweetcorn or garlic but again, taste/budget

Catty1720 · 10/01/2021 01:14

@ShrikeAttack do you batch cook or anything like that to make cooking from scratch easier/less time consuming? I think I’m probably lazy/don’t think enough about what I eat maybe when DD is eating what I eat I’ll be more aware

ineedaholidaynow · 10/01/2021 01:15

Do you class yourself in the 97% @ShrikeAttack. Do you think McDonalds fits in the 3%?

Blondiney · 10/01/2021 01:15

@FamilyOfAliens

Biscuit I can cook you one of these?
And ruin perfectly good cookie dough? Don't you dare!
Ericaequites · 10/01/2021 01:17

For some of us, canned pasta sauce with added mince and sautéed mushrooms over boiled macaroni is good enough. I’m not a great cook, but can make an economical and tasty meal.

Eating tinned spaghetti hoops on toast is my idea of grim.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/01/2021 01:18

Give us a recipe then.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 10/01/2021 01:18

I hope you washed your hands and sang happy birthday after you typed this steaming pile of horseshit.

cyclingmad · 10/01/2021 01:18

Oh sorry I must have missed some news that we are now ruled by OP who has the right to tell people they are shite at cooking and need to do better.

Oops should go cancel my takeaway order right away Wink

Whatever would I have done without OP! 🙄

GypsyLee · 10/01/2021 01:19

I cook from scratch and have baking days and laundry days.
I enjoy finding new combinations, but they are usually well researched and not just chucked in.
My speciality is Joey Grey.
People don't have a lot of time to cook, I know that once you've practised done a dish a few times it becomes second nature, but many don't have the time to invest these days.
It's sad if this is something you value, especially from a nutritional point of view, but everything in moderation.

Byllis · 10/01/2021 01:19

@QueenPawPaws exactly. I used to know someone who loved cooking. I dreaded eating at hers as I thought the food was bloody awful. No seasoning, random ingredients, sometimes undercooked grains. But her and her DH always ate with gusto and it was nutritional stuff, so I can hardly say she couldn't cook.

I also like to make risotto super thick and stodgy, which is apparently frowned upon. It's how I like it though.

SonjaMorgan · 10/01/2021 01:19

Some of my favourite food needs very little cooking or prep. I think I am a relatively good cook but I mainly stick to certain type of Asian cooking. I wouldn't know where to start with lots of European dishes.
