To think that people who describe themselves as 'foodies' are a bit wanky?

You like food? Most of us do.

Can’t get worked up about it.

Lemmeout · 09/01/2021 21:29

Nowt wrong with wanky

SmidgenofaPigeon · 09/01/2021 21:30

Nahhhh there’s DEFINITELY a difference between just liking food and appreciation of flavours, recipes, new restaurants etc etc. People who’d just be happy with basic sausage and mash for dinner and those who might want the mash flavoured with mustard and take time to make a proper onion gravy, for example.

bearlyactive · 09/01/2021 21:30

Personally I think "wanky" is worse than "foodie"!

Thomasy · 09/01/2021 21:31

I'd love to be a proper foodie, but in reality I'm a glutton who loves a buffet too much Grin

Thewithesarehere · 09/01/2021 21:32

You haven’t met real foodies then. Grin

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 09/01/2021 21:32

No, a foodie isn't just someone who likes eating, it's someone with more knowledge, appreciation and artistic interest, who seeks out real quality and new tastes. I just shovel it in without thinking

I suppose the alternative is "epicure"...is that better?

YouBoughtMeAWall · 09/01/2021 21:35

Foodie= bore bag who fills Facebook/insta with their latest kitchen achievement. Just shut up and eat your dinner.

I don’t mind it, I really like food but I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘foodie’ personally. I have a friend who is really interested in food - she goes to small shops to find obscure ingredients, reads food blogs and follows restaurant trends, has basically tried every cuisine you can think of. She’s great for restaurant or recipe recommendations! I’d consider her a foodie because her interest in food is much bigger than mine, but I don’t think she’s wanky - just enthusiastic.

arethereanyleftatall · 09/01/2021 21:38

I disagree op. Because it has a specific meaning. Everybody likes food. Foodies like 'naice' food.

ThorFull · 09/01/2021 21:42

I think there’s a difference between liking good food- having a few recipe books, trying new things. And having food as a hobby- trying new restaurants, buying ingredients in higher end independent shops, buying specialist equipment. I’d say that’s a foodie. And I don’t think that’s particularly wanky.

Tenyearsgone · 09/01/2021 21:42

I always imagine foodies eating their dinners off slates.

OP posts:
NotCornflakes · 09/01/2021 21:43

Totally agree, if someone says they are a foodie I know we won't be friends (says the woman who had tomato soup and tortilla chips for dinner).

Tenyearsgone · 09/01/2021 21:44

I'm more of a drinkie than a foodie really.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 09/01/2021 21:45

Well I bloody love finer foods, shopping around for the right ingredients and trying new things and taking time to cook and prepare etc BUT I just ate a BBQ space raider sandwich on very cheap white bread for dinner so... I guess you can be both.

WoolyMamamoth · 09/01/2021 21:47

Sometimes we do...

And do you serve your quadruple cooked chips in little baskets?

I agree with you, OP. I always think the same when people describe some over-hyped, over-priced vehicle as 'a real driver's car'. As opposed to the other 99% of cars in private ownership, which are clearly intended to be bought new and then immediately left parked up permanently on your drive as a pretty ornament for 20 years until they're automatically scrapped....

RealisticSketch · 09/01/2021 21:52

Would you prefer food geek? Grin

thefirstmrsrochester · 09/01/2021 21:53

My neighbours DH refers to himself as being both ‘foodie’ and a ‘muso’. And he is a boring wanker with it. My neighbour on the other side is a chef and is a delight, happy to help with recipes etc. and brings cakes, pastries and tarts to socially distanced coffee at the back of the houses. Love him.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2021 21:54

Slates are for amateurs - real foodies only ever eat off the scoopy bit of an old garden shovel, with the rust, mud and cat poo left untouched and in situ for authenticity Grin

I do not want to be offensive but some countries are known for using food purely as fuel.

Same 🤣🤣
