To think that people who describe themselves as 'foodies' are a bit wanky?

You like food? Most of us do.

Or an old welly.

Ah, so you'll be wanting it 'au jus', then, I see Grin

Emeraldshamrock · 09/01/2021 22:15

Nah some people have a real interest in food if they're a good cook and offer a dinner invite even better.

Theimpossiblegirl · 09/01/2021 22:18

I'm tempted to get Wanky Foody printed on a tote bag to take to farmer's markets.

I do like food, trying new things and am quite creative in the kitchen but I'm definitely more of a drinky too.

WoolyMamamoth · 09/01/2021 22:19

And do you serve your quadruple cooked chips in little baskets?

Not a fan of chips so I personally don't.

I think judgement is more wanky than appreciating something in life.

OrangePlumGrape · 09/01/2021 22:25

It’s a bit boring when somebody makes a hobby out of something we all do most days as a matter of course. Like reading, surely everybody reads books, is that really a legitimate hobby? Or walking, we all go for a walk now most weekends don’t we but I wouldn’t list it as a particular interest of mine or want to talk about it at work or claim to be a better walker than you are. Probably just me.

ChestnutStuffing · 09/01/2021 22:25

Food as a hobby, basically.

It can be a kind of gluttony. Not too much volume, but too much attention paid.

I like to cook and I like good food, but everything in moderation is a good approach to life.

Oh yes, the billions of book people are just as boring really. The ones who zoom with the bookcases in the background.

The word is just so utterly infantile and twattish. It seems to come with a stupid little giggle on the side, and possibly a head tilt. "Oh, I'm a bit of a foodie, me!" Tosspots.

Call yourself an epicurian, drop the giggle, and stop pissing the rest of us off. Definitely stop putting pictures on Facebook.

Penistoe · 09/01/2021 22:36

it's someone with more knowledge, appreciation and artistic interest, who seeks out real quality and new tastes

This is what it says in the dictionary next to the word wanky!

BirdsInTheAttic · 09/01/2021 22:39

Can’t get that worked up about ‘foodie’, though I get where you’re coming from.
The one that makes me cringe is ‘thinker’, when people have it on their Twitter bio or similar. Like the rest of us don’t think?!! Or are your thoughts just much more important than everyone else’s?

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/01/2021 22:40

Slates are old hat. What you want is a meal in a tiny bath.

Cantgetoutofbedtoday · 09/01/2021 22:43

Completely agree. Someone referred to themselves as a foodie on a thread earlier 🙄

RumJerrySailorRum · 09/01/2021 22:44

YABU in the main ,although I do get your point so I'll let you off 😂

My Ex SIL classed herself as a foodie, did weird random shit that was sometimes inedible, sneered at you if you used a jar of pasta sauce for example but couldn't make a fucking omelette if her kids lives depended on it. She was wanky.

My mate who is a chef, takes her food seriously, and is a foodie. She never sneers, always helps with pointers etc and gets you ingredients from her restaurant kitchen. She is not wanky. She's ace, we all love her.

But no, not all people read, take walks etc and I think food can definitely be classed as a hobby.

If I had more money and a bigger kitchen id be cooking for love not necessity.

dayswithaY · 09/01/2021 22:48

Yes but they're not as annoying as InstaMums.

Dee1975 · 09/01/2021 22:56

🤣🤣 love this post. Yes, absolute wankies!!

noodlezoodle · 09/01/2021 23:03

I have occasionally referred to myself as a foodie, but I have also felt like a bit of a wanker when I did so, if that helps?

Signing up for one of @Theimpossiblegirl's tote bags.

I will also have a good old nose at people's bookshelves given half a chance. Sorry OP.

Oblomov20 · 09/01/2021 23:04

I completely disagree with op. I'm not keen on the word 'foodie'. But I think that people who are interested are quite rare, and no I don't think most people ARE that interested.

Have you ever read a 'what's for dinner thread' on MN?

I'm not keen on the word 'foodie'. But I think that people who are interested are quite rare, and no I don't think most people ARE that interested.

But how do you define 'interested'? Most people do care and take an interest in what they eat, even if their range isn't as exotic or far-reaching as that of some. Even then, if a Brit who takes a keen interest in seeking out, say, a particular Sri Lankan delicacy, does that make the entire population of SL foodies too, even though it might just be everyday fare to many of them? Is a Chilean who eats steak & kidney pie and mash with jellied eels in their own country a foodie, whereas your average Londoner at home wouldn't be?

I think it's just snobbery, really - by all means eat what you want, but what does it achieve by slapping down people who prefer other foods that you personally consider pedestrian and/or inferior to your own preferences? It's like sneering at people on the bus reading John Le Carre and Agatha Christie whilst wielding your copy of Beowulf and loudly declaring "Well, of course - I'm a REAL reader - we're quite rare, as most people couldn't care less about what they read".

ALightFromTheShadows · 09/01/2021 23:21

Not all people like food- I'm really not that fussed. It's just fuel IMO.
Are foodies harming you in some way?

BaubleBubble · 09/01/2021 23:30

Yes, I cringe when watching Master Chef and they’re talking about how something needs to have a ‘delicate crunch and a light middle’ or something and taking it so bloody seriously.

I also think the same watching Grand Designs when they’re going on about something utterly trivial and wasteful and self-indulgent, like a specific wood finish.

Although thinking about it, most hobbies are trivial, wasteful and self-indulgent.

I think food and shelter makes me get an extra twinge of guilt somehow.

5foot5 · 09/01/2021 23:33

Completely different to my usual work place then. Before the Awfulness when we used to go in to the office every day, the first part of Monday morning would be spent discussing where we had walked that weekend. But I would list it as main interest and back when we could take holidays they usually tevolved around walking.

Oh and I think OP is BU. Unashamed foodie here. Mind you I don't do much social media so I won't be boring people who aren't remotely interested by posting boastful pictures of my dinner on Facebook or insta or whatever

No. I just think there is no such thing as a foodie. It''s made up wank.
