To want to go to Markies for picky bits

736 replies

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

I think you deserve to go to Markies now.

MrsGrindah · 09/01/2021 15:15

@RickiTarr Completely agree. Wish there was an emoji for wide eyed innocence!

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2021 15:15

Don't care how many 'cool girls' licking Covid patients there are on the thread. Just stay the fuck at home and stop enabling the fucking virus to spread.

I'm about to head out for a food shop myself. No slots to book a delivery for what seems like weeks. Sorry if that's unreasonable but I don't fancy starvation or eating the carpet. 🤷‍♀️

I promise not to lick the grocery produce in Sainsbury's though.

IcyApril · 09/01/2021 15:15

YANBU.

Never heard of Markies. We would call it Marks or M&S.

Picky bits is perfectly normal in this part of the world.

MaryShelley1818 · 09/01/2021 15:15

It's Marks and Sparks or Marksees here. Possibly regional differences but totally baffled by the OTT ranting about it.
And yes OP I don't think it's unreasonable to buy food atm.

PleasantVille · 09/01/2021 15:16

@LaMarschallin

SusannaSpider

Oh lord, only on Mumsnet - my children say smorgasbord not picky bits.

It's a real word, you know: just ask
PleasantVille.

Clearly @SusannaSpider knows that as she didn't put it in quotes Grin

Not sure why we've diverted to posts of examples of people who do use correct words though.

LindaEllen · 09/01/2021 15:17

Sorry but you don't need to go. It's not essential. You haven't run out of food, as you made it clear you get your shopping delivered.

To go shopping because you're 'fed up', right now, isn't great. Or allowed.

We're all fed up. I'd love to go and buy a load of really nice, snacky food. But I'm not going to, because that would mean an extra trip, which could mean either we catch covid, or someone in the shop catches it from me, if I happen to be carrying it.

We're in a national lockdown, so unless you have a physical/medical/safety reason to go for an extra shopping trip in person when you already have plenty of food in the house, stay put.

Reminds me of a very late night shift once with a very junior FY1, speaking to a newly arrived patient .

‘He’s very dysphasic isn’t he?’ says doctor .

‘No’, I say, ‘just from Shetland!’

cakewench · 09/01/2021 15:19

Ignoring any predictable follow up comments, I'd say go for it. Mask up and get those Serrano ham and manchego rollitos before someone else does.

Do you have to run out of food to be allowed to shop nowadays? I'm pretty sure that's not in the guidelines...

Belledan1 · 09/01/2021 15:21

I call it the same but sort of in phonics - Marksis! People are so rude on here I remember outrage on here that people called dorothy perkins dotty ps. I cant see why you cant go. I am sure alot if people on here go to the supermarket and buy picky bits in their weekly. shop. I had an online this week but forgot washing powder and disinfectant so went poundland near me

Sarcobaleno · 09/01/2021 15:22

Jeezo. What a bunch of life-sucking arseholes. Markies is a regional nickname for marks and spencer. Get over it. Any name for nibbles, picky bits etc is always a bit wanky. If she'd have said party food you'd all have kicked off she was having a party.

OP, go and get your picky bits and enjoy them, we all need to find small bits of enjoyment just now. If you're feeling guilty bung in a box of tampax and stop stressing.

Reallybadidea · 09/01/2021 15:23

@LaMarschallin "Marks and Expensive"

Now that I like Grin

Also liking "Smorgasbord". We call that meal 'Christmas tapas'.

Sarcobaleno · 09/01/2021 15:23

And for 90% of people who have not gone to shops for something they couldn't actually live without, I call bullshit.

How awful Op. we went a bit downmarket and went to Asda for some cookies and drinks to take on a walk for an illegal picnic.
It's my birthday so there Grin

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 15:25

@PoptartPoptart, it was a click and collect, actually. And there was lots of slots available. So there

Markies? Marksies I think you mean

No. That might be what /you/ call it. Op calls it Markies.

What makes you think that your version of an abbreviated name is any more correct than someone else's?

Markies here too. Never heard it called Marksies, but I'm not a dick so I wouldn't correct someone that did.

Happy Birthday, YRH. I didn’t know they had Asda in Norfolk. Smile
Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 15:27

I’m from glasgow but live in Aberdeen. It’s only in Aberdeen that Markies is used. Not in Glasgow.

In Glasgow I would be slagged for saying either nibbles or picky bits. But I can’t imagine the socially acceptable way of saying it.

Returning the liking for an alternative Christmas term - good idea Smile

@iklboo

Now you know you should have posted:

'AIBU to arrange a visit to Messrs Marks & Spencer's establishment of fine foods and goods in order to purchase a variety of foodstuffs? One has the inclination for a cornucopia of delights and sweet meats for ones's evening sustenance'

Gosh that would make me so happy Grin

@Butchyrestingface I am coming for you !!!!

Agree this thread appears to have lost it's light hearted appeal somewhat.

OP is trying to "Make Memories" here ....
