If you're not a critical worker can I ask what do you do?

Curiosity really as I've just read the list of critical workers and other than entertainment industry and non essential retail I can't think of any other jobs that aren't on the list at all.

So if you're still working but don't class as a critical worker what do you do?
I'm a social worker so am, my Dp is with construction industry so doesn't although some of the jobs they've done do as the building when finished will be used in a critical role.

Editor.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 09/01/2021 12:14

Most professional services would be non-critical workers.

StripedSalamander · 09/01/2021 12:16

HR so wouldn’t be considered critical but my employer is a critical service provider therefore I’m considered a ‘key worker’

DH is a traffic warden and has to work. He had a few weeks off during the first lockdown but now they have apparently put things in place for it to be safe for them to work and they still want tickets issued. He says it's really quiet though and not much to do since the schools have closed and they were his main patrol areas.

ElsaSchraeder · 09/01/2021 12:22

marketing, sales, conferencing, hospitality, any kind of consultancy or research, editing, interior design, fashion, food technology, Web design, sports....

whataballbag · 09/01/2021 12:22

Not a critical worker, work in construction

TellerTuesday4EVA · 09/01/2021 12:22

Recruitment, still working full time and busier than usual for this time of year.

Nodancingshoes · 09/01/2021 12:24

My Dh is a landscaper so not critical. However his contract is with the MOD so probably could be classed as a keyworker at a push. Hairdressers, beautitions, general office workers, carpet layers, builders, scaffolders, car dealerships? That sort of thing?

MissMarpleDarling · 09/01/2021 12:27

Still in the office and the only one out of my team dealing with clients face to face all day. Think I am paid the least.

TheMShip · 09/01/2021 12:27

I'm a staff scientist, one of my major projects is on Covid right now. Technically a key worker, but certainly not critical and we don't qualify for a school place (Scotland, requires both parents to be key worker category 1/2, I'm category 3).

thecatsthecats · 09/01/2021 12:29

COO of a web systems development company, providing ancillary services to keyworkers.

Normally we meet clients in person, but we have saved a lot of time and travel by just doing virtual meetings.

B33Fr33 · 09/01/2021 12:32

My husband counts as a key worker. He has oversight of a team who do installation and replacement of rail signalling. He is the overall 'in charge' but is rarely (about 5 days out of 14) needed on location so can do some work from home. He doesn't count himself as critical. But our neighbour works exclusively online from home doing management of an IT team installing and up grading for the NHS. He does count as critical. I guess NHS is the distinction.

MutteringDarkly · 09/01/2021 12:34

Research (industrial not medical), design, some charities, recruitment, corporate training, commercial sales (non-essential items), marketing, PR, advertising, HR in some co.s (although I'd argue payroll can be critical), I.T., tech support, fashion, printing and publishing, non-essential manufacturing, hair and beauty, business coaching, archivist...

All jobs have an importance but I'd put the above outside the "critical" list.

Girlonit · 09/01/2021 12:35

Law does count doesn't it @gradetoolisted. Well some of essential to running of the justice system it says.

Construction like I say depends what you're building/working on @whataballbag

dreamingwondering · 09/01/2021 12:39

Lecturing isn't considered critical in Scotland

Girlonit · 09/01/2021 12:39

I guess yours depends on what your company deals with as IT is on the list of critical jobs @JingleCatJingle

information technology and data infrastructure sector and primary industry supplies to continue during the coronavirus (COVID-19) response

Governance officer for a government department. Every meeting I’ve minutes since March has been virtual.

Guineapig99 · 09/01/2021 12:43

Education training x 2 which qualifies but WFH and everything is online so don't consider ourselves ' critical' in that sense.

QuantumJump · 09/01/2021 12:46

DH works for an insurance company, I don't think he'd count as 'essential financial services provision' which is how it's described in the list of critical workers.

tempnamechange98765 · 09/01/2021 12:47

Civil service. DH in fhe financial sector.

gradetoolisted · 09/01/2021 12:48

Not all areas of law. A large portion don’t work in anything to do with family law or criminal justice and those that work on the transactional side are likely to be able to work from home. Lots of lawyers never see the inside of a court room.
