If you're not a critical worker can I ask what do you do?

Curiosity really as I've just read the list of critical workers and other than entertainment industry and non essential retail I can't think of any other jobs that aren't on the list at all.

So if you're still working but don't class as a critical worker what do you do?
I'm a social worker so am, my Dp is with construction industry so doesn't although some of the jobs they've done do as the building when finished will be used in a critical role.

@Blowingagale

Benefits adviser- wfh not critical worker.
Who processes the claims so people can be paid their benefits or is paid automatically? When i was out of work recently , I still attended telephone appointments with a job coach/ benefits advisor .

@SallyMcNally

Marketing for a university. Technically university staff are critical and that seems to cover everyone who works there but sensibly our work has asked that only people who are actually key to education delivery/ lab research ask for letters to prove critical worker status and that everyone else who can work from homes does.

They are being very flexible with parents as well and are offering to part time furlough with top up pay anyone who needs it.

@SallyMcNally my friend has the same job at a university and is insistent she’s critical and her kids are going to school Monday. The uni have given everyone a blanket letter to use. I think it’s irresponsible. She had been working from home since March and is adamant that she can’t be furloughed and can’t work from home whilst gone schooling.
PinkPiranha11 · 09/01/2021 17:57

Home schooling - sorry.

HOkieCOkie · 09/01/2021 18:08

I’m a Nanny. And still working.

Verrucapepper · 09/01/2021 18:10

Work in projects for a university (occasionally student facing). My boss says I’m a key worker but mumsnet make me terrified to send my kids into school!

Blowingagale · 09/01/2021 18:33

@ Doingtheboxerbeat
I’m with a charity so benefits entitlement rather than processing. I know a few job centre staff are around for very vulnerable clients, don’t know about the rest of the back office except that they are working very hard under a lot of pressure.

That makes sense, as soon as I hit post I thought there was no mention that you worked for the DWP 🤦‍♀️. I thought the claimants would view you as the most important critical worker Grin.
F1rstt1imer · 09/01/2021 20:04

My DH is a zookeeper which isn’t deemed critical or key...apparently elephants can feed themselves 🙄🤷‍♀️

I take he’s still allowed to go to work (unlike retail/ restaurant workers?)

Many of us aren’t furloughed or critical yet we’re doing roles that have to be done for the benefit of the country

HettySunshine · 09/01/2021 20:16

Solicitor but not criminal law.

caringcarer · 09/01/2021 23:34

One adult son world as lorry driver delivering some food, second ds works in car part factory packing up batteries etc. with ambulance contract, dd works as payroll manager all are working this lockdown but all furloughed in April except son delivering food only furloughed for 6 weeks. Dd made redundant at end of Oct but got a new job in December to start at the beginning of January. DH financial data analyst wfh. I work at home as foster carer.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 09/01/2021 23:39

In the first lockdown I was an assessor/ trainer for social care. Also a consultant for care services (adult elderly ) my job never required me to physically be there. Technically in the first lockdown the assessors were told we classified as keyworker and should send our DC in. We revolted and refused saying it was taking places away from others as hard as it was we could work and deliver childcare.

It couldn't be forever as eventually observations would need to be done but it could last a while.

As it happened I had to resign due to the majority of issues being with company and childcare. It just became untenable and ds1 has extra needs. My DC were in a really bad way. However I believe my previous colleagues are still holding that line.

ceeveebee · 09/01/2021 23:41

I’m in charge of legal, risk and compliance for a FTSE100 non essential digital retailer.
DH works for a big 4 accounting firm in mergers and acquisitions
We are both busier than ever but non essential (which I agree with) and able to wfh.

jakeyboy1 · 09/01/2021 23:41

I'm not a critical worker but most of my clients are. The public sector is very reliant on private sector people doing their jobs and this is often overlooked.

MutantNinjaCovid · 09/01/2021 23:43

@Guineapig99

Education training x 2 which qualifies but WFH and everything is online so don't consider ourselves ' critical' in that sense.
Why do you think it qualifies?
Sparklesocks · 09/01/2021 23:44
