I long for boring...

ListeningQuietly · 11/01/2021 19:53

I suspect a large part of the organizing will come in removing the fig-leaf of "we're a platform".
It's been the big get-out clause since the emergence of highly connected digital space.
THIS

RedToothBrush · 11/01/2021 20:05

@merrymouse

I feel so weary right now with all the outright lies flying about on social media, about Trump, Covid, the vaccine etc.

The problem is that outrage sells, and the truth is often boring.

Even the BBC is guilty of monetising outrage manufactured by known liars - look at the guests on Question Time.

Yep.

This.

Either Trump has resigned or the State Department has had it's website hacked

Wierd. Prince Charles talking on CNN.
Hack?

Apparently... it could be a 'disgruntled staffer'

Or the Russians? Today's Press Release on same site. www.state.gov/sanctioning-russia-linked-disinformation-network-for-its-involvement-in-attempts-to-influence-u-s-election/

Donald J. Trump's term ended on 2021-01-11 19:38:51.
Really odd as it's about 15:27 in DC.

NotaRealLawyer · 11/01/2021 20:30

home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sm1232
"WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) took additional action against seven individuals and four entities that are part of a Russia-linked foreign influence network associated with Andrii Derkach. Russian agent Derkach was designated on September 10, 2020, pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13848, for his attempt to influence the 2020 U.S. presidential election."

“Russian disinformation campaigns targeting American citizens are a threat to our democracy,” said Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. “The United States will continue to aggressively defend the integrity of our election systems and processes.”

I am not so sure Trump will escape criminal charges over the Capitol riots/coup. The FBI are definitely moving on arrests and it could just be they are;

a) checking to see if there's enough evidence to convinct and,
b) waiting until the 21st, after which point a federal pardon is no longer in Trump's power to give.

Law enforcement are known for spending time to build a case. Plus, given the ongoing discussions of the 25th/impeachment, any prosecutor with some sense will wait for that to shake out before committing.

Impeachment or 25th amendment? Alexandria O-C is strongly of the opinion it's not an either/or situation, they should go down all the avenues to get him out. Clear and present danger ⚠️

FATEdestiny · 11/01/2021 20:49

CNN:

There are questions over whether the 14th Amendment may apply to Trump. Here's what it says.

"No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability."

No mention of the state website back on CNN. I also note the odd future time stamp.

CrochetOrBust · 11/01/2021 20:51

The State website is now saying it’s having technical difficulties.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 11/01/2021 20:52

I'm getting a 404 from that state site.

It's like the beginning of the Handmaid's Tale, or any dystopian novel, when you realise that it's all going to get really, really grim.

Grin A Disgruntled Employee Changed The State Department’s Website To Say That Trump’s Term Ends Today, Sources Say
www.buzzfeednews.com/amphtml/christopherm51/state-department-website-trump-term-ending-employee

The president’s biography was changed to read, “Donald J. Trump's term ended on 2021-01-11 19:49:00,” while the vice president’s biography was edited to “Michael R. Pence's term ended on 2021-01-11 19:44:22.” The time stamp on Trump's page changed multiple times.

Just as MN PPs have already opined.
(As well as hitting him in his pocket $$$)

A lot has happened in the last week, including the president losing his Twitter feed, impeachment coming to the fore and the PGA withdrawing from Trump National. He's "gutted" by the PGA move, a person close to the White House says.

He’s angry about impeachment, people who have spoken to him say. But the reaction to the PGA decision was different order of magnitude.

And, Scotland is looking at whether Trump money laundered through the golf course?

Really?

I would love to see the PGA twist the knife by publicly stating that his claimed handicap of 2.8 is a complete fiction and he's mid teens at best. That would be enough to cause his head to pop like a ripe zit.
