I had assumed worse case scenario would be summer term...but it was pointed out to me tonight that if vaccinations are slow in rolling out, it could quite conceivably be September.

Thoughts?

I would hope not, I would like to see exam yrs in school (hopefully on a rota) ASAP.

OppsUpsSide · 09/01/2021 11:12

I’m still working towards it being February half term!

Delta1 · 09/01/2021 11:14

Partial opening after Feb half term i reckon. Most likely for the younger kids and exam years. Gradual return for everyone else.

Delta1 · 09/01/2021 11:15

There's absolutely no reason to think it would be September. That's just pointless scaremongering.

Imapotato · 09/01/2021 11:24

I’m hoping for after the February half term. Dd1 particularly needs to be in school. She is y11 and missing out on so much.

I hope they at least manage to get y11 and 13 back. I know that exams have been cancelled now, but they still need produce work which they can be marked on and complete their education. Dd1 has put in so much effort over her whole school life, I’m gutted for her that this is how her school days are ending.

annevonkleve · 09/01/2021 11:26

They've got about 5 weeks until February half term plus half term week itself. You can get a lot of people vaccinated in 6 weeks if they get on with it.

Then they should be able to do a half and half rota like they did in the summer - and have one week on and one week off with another 6 weeks to carry on vaccinating.

From Easter a full return should be possible.

Delatron · 09/01/2021 11:27

It is pointless scaremongering based on nothing. The schools closed end of March last time with no vaccine on the horizon. By Yr 6 went back part time ( 4 days per week). From June.

But yes with a vaccine the’ll keep them closed form the beginning of Jan until September. Ridiculous suggestion

Exactly. And yet threads saying it will be September are popping up all over MN like fecking whackamole.
Marzipan12 · 09/01/2021 11:35

I hope not. If it goes on longer then Feb half term they will have to put kids on a rota instead of prioritising keyworkers to ensure every child gets an education in school. As much as I feel for keyworkers they cannot justify denying other kids an education longterm.

Saz12 · 09/01/2021 11:39

Early to mid- March at latest is my guess. The vaccine aim is to get 25% of the population done by mid-February, but that 25% represents 80% of hospital admissions. 12 days after they’ll have excellent immunity in that group.
Couple weeks more to do the under-50’s who have asthma etc but not CEV, the public-facing essential workers (teachers, food sales, public transport staff, etc)...

I don’t see any justification for many restrictions going beyond mid-March.

Absolutely agree and my DS is attending school as a key worker child. I feel for his peers at home.

Not a chance. Stop it with the scaremongering.

Funkypolar · 09/01/2021 11:51

Keep them closed and move to online learning permanently. Think of the reduced costs! 👍🏻

Nah, it will be July 2023. Happy now?

Nonamesavail · 09/01/2021 11:56

September I think. Worst case next easter

lockeddownandcrazy · 09/01/2021 11:57

They are not really closed, some are running at 75% attendance due to the loose definition of 'keyworker' and one parent being a key worker being enough to get a place. Plus those who have - supposedly - no tech at home, those with EHCP's etc. Total farce!

SushiGo · 09/01/2021 12:02

I think some year groups will be in after Easter, but others probably not until September.

I also think they are going to have to make the key worker criteria stricter and send a lot of kids currently at school that have a parent at home. Very unpopular I know, but case levels are just so, so high.

A cynic might suggest it’s a deliberate ploy by the government. Claiming they have bowed to pressure and closed the schools, when in reality they remain largely open like they wanted.
