To think Lidl packing policy is bonkers...?

I take my shopping bags to Lisl. At the till they think they are safer/ customers are quicker if they put their shopping in a basket 1st then took basket over to side and pack there coz of COVID..
I pointed out to the cashier that I would ve in the shop less time if i put shopping straight into my bags and walked out...id also be near her the exact same amout of time. Am i thick or something?
In effect customers are packing twice/ loitering longer.

Both Aldi and Lidl have always had the pack at the shelf policy.
You're not supposed to have your stuff at the till even in ordinary times

DameCelia · 07/01/2021 13:06

Sorry 'youre not supposed to pack your stuff at the till'

StrawberrySquash · 07/01/2021 13:08

But if you pack on the side you aren't next to her. And she'll be quicker packing into your basket than you will be. And the queue will move faster leading to less hanging around.

millymoo1202 · 07/01/2021 13:08

Totally agree, I had my bags sitting in trolley open ready to put shopping in and was told I wasn’t allowed to do that!!! World has gone bonkers

ImAllOut · 07/01/2021 13:08

You've always had to pack at the shelf, it's more efficient and they serve more customers. If I've only got a small basket shop though I just like my bag up at the end and slide it in as they scan. If I've got a trolley shop I tend to have my bags already open in the trolley, with the trolley facing lengthways to the till, and I try to slide most of it into the bags where I can.

Whatwill2021bringus · 07/01/2021 13:08

That’s not just due to covid. That has been the same for many years but often they just let people
pack at the till anyway.

Several years ago now I shopped in Aldi for the first time (didn’t have one in my area so had never been). Started parking at the till as that was what I was used to and I got told off and told to pack along the bench thing at the front or in my own car. I was fuming at the time 🤣

ImAllOut · 07/01/2021 13:08

I should add that this is in Aldi, we don't have a Lidl nearby.

Givemeabreak88 · 07/01/2021 13:09

Use the self check out instead

sleepylittlebunnies · 07/01/2021 13:10

I think it depends on how neatly you pack and probably does take slightly longer with a basket rather than a trolley. I use a trolley and quickly shove it all in there then pack into bags in the car boot. With a basket I stack it in the basket stand once the shoppings on the belt and use 1 big shopping bag to shove my shopping into. I can always keep up with the staff scanning in Lidl and Aldi, I can understand them preferring proper packing to be done on the shelf if customers can’t keep up though.

maddy68 · 07/01/2021 13:10

It slows them down staff at Lidl and aldo are targeted for speed they have to scan so many per minute In order to receive the higher pay

OscarWildesCat · 07/01/2021 13:11

I’ve been with the entire trolley lined with one of those blue IKEA bags so I’m still throwing straight in the trolley and not faffing with bags yet still was told I have to removed the bag from my trolley. I get why there’s a rule on this but this was just ridiculous, the bag lined the whole trolley. Handles either side so it didn’t fold in etc. Madness.

Boulshired · 07/01/2021 13:12

You may think you are quicker but the majority are not, the idea being the quicker you go through the queue the less staff needed and the food is cheaper

SoupDragon · 07/01/2021 13:12

I use a trolley with an IKEA blue bag in it. I also do the "pack at the car" technique after I read it here - hadn't occurred to me before.

RedMarauder · 07/01/2021 13:12

You will only get told off if the queue is long and you don't keep up with the cashier's scan speed.

Depending on the cashier's scanning speed I can either get it all in bags or part of it in bags.

Some Aldis and Lidls now have self-service tills. If you wish to pack all your stuff and you have a basket of stuff then use one of those.

AlohaMolly · 07/01/2021 13:14

I’ve just got back from doing my Lidl shop, trolley lined with bags as a PP, and the cashier didn’t bat an eyelid.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 07/01/2021 13:15

"Use the self check out instead"

They don't exist in Lidl

ImAllOut · 07/01/2021 13:16

Yes this must be area specific as I've never been told off at Aldi, or on rare trips to Lidl, for having bags in my trolley ready.

Givemeabreak88 · 07/01/2021 13:19

They have self checkouts in my Lidl I use them all the time (in both of my local ones)

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 07/01/2021 13:19

Maybe not in your area. But they do exist. I use them.

Aldi and lidl have always had the policy of letting things into the trolley or basket and going over to the designated packing area to bag up

throwa · 07/01/2021 13:19

I went to Lidl this morning, and as always sorted the shopping out pre-scanning, lined the trolley with bags and chucked things into the appropriate bags as fast as they were scanned. I admit I do sometimes stack things craftily to slow down the check out operators (things on top of each other), but I've never been asked to pack at the bench, nor have I seen anyone else asked to do this. Most people seem to do a variant of the above.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 07/01/2021 13:22

Nah, exactly the reason I don’t use Aldi, stupid rule. After being barked at when i was the only soul in the shop and had my bags ready to put shopping straight into I won’t be bothering again. Yanbu.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 07/01/2021 13:24

RedMarauder, there was nobody in the shop when i was told. Jobsworths.

RavingAnnie · 07/01/2021 13:24

I pack into my bags at Aldi and Lidl. I do it quick though and don't faff. I agree that if you aren't packing neatly it's no different in time to pack into a bag than back in your trolley.
