To think Lidl packing policy is bonkers...?

I take my shopping bags to Lisl. At the till they think they are safer/ customers are quicker if they put their shopping in a basket 1st then took basket over to side and pack there coz of COVID..
I pointed out to the cashier that I would ve in the shop less time if i put shopping straight into my bags and walked out...id also be near her the exact same amout of time. Am i thick or something?
In effect customers are packing twice/ loitering longer.

In lockdown here they've encouraged people to take their trolleys outside and pack their stuff directly into their car/ bags in the open air.

Romancer · 07/01/2021 16:16

I think it is also a security idea, staff can see into the trolley, and you don't spend time chatting and distracting cashier and slipping an extra can of beans in.
Lidl is the only place where I have been challenged about had I paid. I had. Manager was walking past and spoke to checkout man,

Northernsoullover · 07/01/2021 16:20

I always pack at the till in Lidl Confused. Everyone does where I live. Aldi too. I don't understand how else you would do it? Dollop it back into your trolley? You could chuck it in an open bag surely in the same amount of time as it would take to put in bags?

Northernsoullover · 07/01/2021 16:20

Trolley not bags

justchecking1 · 07/01/2021 16:30

The bench is all taped up in our Lidl, so you can't use it. They shout at you if you go anywhere near it. They must all have different policies 🤷🏻‍♀️

itsgettingweird · 07/01/2021 16:48

@Iwantacookie

Just have ikea bags open in your trolley shove everything in at the till. No need to use the shelf at the back. What pisses me off now is when people try to queue jump instead of using self service.
I actually did this last week.

Was really good but wouldn't work for a big shop!

SlopesOff · 07/01/2021 16:53

@Robbybobtail

One of the reasons I never shop there anymore (that and the rotten fruit and veg and tasteless own brand items)
I am with you on the own brand stuff, anything that does have any flavour is pretty awful.

Certain fruit & veg is OK, cabbages, potatoes, and apples, if chosen carefully but most other stuff goes off really fast, if it isn't already growing mould, there was an entire shelf of hairy blueberries in ours, every single pack, last year.

BlueThistles · 07/01/2021 18:06

Its great quality where I am in Scotland.. ☔️

Iwantacookie · 07/01/2021 18:31

@itsgettingweird
I do for my big shop. 2 ikea bags open chuck it all in as it comes down.

CoronaIsWatching · 07/01/2021 18:34

Has anyone else ever visited the Lidl in Shepherds Bush? If you want to see the worst humanity has to offer then go there

It is arrogant to think that you are entitled to break the rules.
teenagetantrums · 07/01/2021 18:43

Everyone here packs at the the till in Lidl. They don't mind. My DP works there and l can assure you they don't get paid more for scanning quicker as previously suggested 🤣.

Burnthurst187 · 07/01/2021 18:46

My local Lidl never say anything! I was there this morning and just have a couple of bags for life open in the trolley and just chuck it all in

GabriellaMontez · 07/01/2021 19:40

I go to 3 different lidls depending where I'm working. I don't do this, I've not noticed anyone else, no one said anything... his would you even know this was a thing? I wouldn't go if it was.

GabriellaMontez · 07/01/2021 19:42

Where are the rules?

It's always been like that! Yeet all your shit into the trolley, pack it at the shelf. Better than trying to keep up with the superspeed checkout people.

VanillaAndOrange · 07/01/2021 21:48

We usually have a couple of big plastic trugs in the trolley and put everything straight into those, so there's no repacking to be done (and bulky items like multipacks and sacks of potatoes go straight from conveyor belt to trolley to car). Our car is out of action at the moment, so I went there on foot today with a rucksack and another big bag, and for the first time I just put everything in the trolley and repacked it at the shelf. I don't know whether they would have objected if I'd tried to juggle all that stuff into two bags on the tiny bit of counter at the till, but it would certainly have been harder for me! I have packed at the till in another branch where I occasionally buy just a few things on my way home, and they don't seem to mind.

cherish123 · 08/01/2021 00:23

I am quite confused by this. What does it mean, "pack at shelf". Presumably the shelf is at the till.

Shelves line the wall at the end of all the tools for packing your groceries.

Yes then you pack at that huuuuuge shelf behind you
RickiTarr · 08/01/2021 02:22

The only time I ever went to Aldi the checkout operator only managed to grunt and nod towards the (totally empty, uninteresting) shelf. She couldn’t be bothered to use words and it took me ages to understand what she was suggesting. The DC thought it was a hilariously daffy system.

I thought a supermarket where elderly and disabled customers clearly weren’t welcome was really strange and sinister and I’ve never been back. I don’t care how good their face cream and stollen are, grocery stores are supposed to be for everyone, not some Triumph of the Will shite.

Typically on a 10 foot long banner
Northernsoullover · 08/01/2021 06:24

Uhhuh wtf are you on about? Everyone packs at the till. So my whole neighbourhood is arrogant? You utter loon. Did you have a bad day yesterday? Why so salty? Grin

Northernsoullover · 08/01/2021 06:27

Sinful no banners in my Lidl. Are there in Aldi? I don't go there so have no idea.
