To think Lidl packing policy is bonkers...?

I take my shopping bags to Lisl. At the till they think they are safer/ customers are quicker if they put their shopping in a basket 1st then took basket over to side and pack there coz of COVID..
I pointed out to the cashier that I would ve in the shop less time if i put shopping straight into my bags and walked out...id also be near her the exact same amout of time. Am i thick or something?
In effect customers are packing twice/ loitering longer.

Do people still not know how Lidl and Aldi work.

If I'm shopping alone I will place the item straight back in to the trolley which sometimes makes me faster than the cashier!
I then will pack it properly at the packing bench or just pack it at the boot of my car.

If dp is with me, we pack as the cashier scans because it's faster with the two of us. Never been told to move to a packing bench and I've never heard a staff member tell anyone that.

TurquoiseDragon · 07/01/2021 14:01

I would bet that a good number of those who claim to be able to pack at the speed of the till operator scanning aren't being totally honest.

Most of the time I see someone packing into bags at the till, they take longer than they think and the till operator has to stop to let them catch up. It's all that faffing over which bag to put things into.

I just put everything in the trolley and pack at the shelf or by the car.

BlueThistles · 07/01/2021 14:06

@malificent7

She didn't pack into my teolley. She put the items at the end of the till...i then had to bend down to put my items in the basket. ( one with a pulley so too heavy/ big to lift.) I then had to take my stuff to a shelf behind her till and repack there. If i just shoved it all in my hand luggage i'd have been out in a jiffy.
This isn't a new system because of covid.. it's always been this way.. you put the heavy stuff into the trolley in the first place .... how did you manage that ? Confused

You're being unreasonable to shop in a store that you know cannot accommodate your needs. Just shop elsewhere and been done in a jiffy.

mouse70 · 07/01/2021 14:09

I have always just put items back into trolley once scanned in Lidl and take to my car to pack into bags as they are always so fast (did not know I was supposed to pack at shelf) Due to Covid on the very few times I have gone to other supermarkets I now do the same so I am spending a little less time in the shop, also gives me time to sort out my purchases into different bags ie fruit and veg in one, things needing to be kept cold into cold bag and delicate items(bread-eggs) Tins and heavy items into another bag.

fashu · 07/01/2021 14:09

I'm sure my Aldi is encouraging people to pack at their cars rather than the shelf, or if your me stick it in my pram.
I can understand though, because some people are painfully slow at packing.

me either.. I find it way better actually than trying to pack in Tesco where the checkout person scoots my item at me. and I try to pack there on the spot... in Lidli and Aldi you repack the trolley then take you time sorting into bags .. I much prefer this Grin
unlikelytobe · 07/01/2021 14:11

I never knew Lidl or Aldi had self-scan as they don't in my area. Self-scan tills usually require a member of staff supervising the inevitable problems....'unexpected item in the bagging area'!! Not to mention the nicking.

I wish they had a 'less than 10 items' till also as I can be waiting behind someone with a mountain of stuff in one giant trolley but that is probably another staff/time/turnover issue. Lidl is the one supermarket I'm always getting asked by the person behind me if they can go in front of me because they have only 5 items when I have 8!

As for packing at the till some people are quick enough and others need some bloody trainingSmile

Gwenhwyfar · 07/01/2021 14:13

"Do people still not know how Lidl and Aldi work."

I know how my Lidl and Aldi work and I pack my own bags at the till. I would normally have a basket rather than a trolley though. I have never had to go to a shelf.

Bunnybigears · 07/01/2021 14:13

Aldi asks you to pack at the car which I love as I have time to pack properly and I can take my mask off and breathe while I'm doing it.

lalafafa · 07/01/2021 14:14

I don’t see the difference in throwing my shopping into 3 open bags in my trolley. Never been pulled up about it.

SteelLucy · 07/01/2021 14:15

Used to work in Aldi, we would have a target speed of around 1000 items per minute average. Idea is less time on the till-more time to stock shelves etc.. so only need to employ one person to do tills and delivery rather than employ people for separate tasks like other supermarkets. That's why Aldi/Lidl pay more to staff.

Sunshineandflipflops · 07/01/2021 14:15

I don't shop in Lidl or Aldi for this reason. I think customer service at the checkouts is crap so I'd rather take my money elsewhere and have less stressful shopping experience.

NothingICanDo · 07/01/2021 14:16

I had my bags sitting in trolley open ready to put shopping in and was told I wasn’t allowed to do that!!! World has gone bonkers
What??!! Thats mad! . I've been doing this for years..I just did it a few days ago...how strange

VinylDetective · 07/01/2021 14:17

I leave my bags in the boot and pack them there. Much easier.

NothingICanDo · 07/01/2021 14:17

Yeah...in the pissings of rain

Sunshineandflipflops · 07/01/2021 14:18

Oh, and the fact they don't have a till for baskets/10 items or less. I don't want to wit behind 2 other customers with full trolleys to pay for my 3 items, no matter how quick they throw your shopping at you at the till.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 07/01/2021 14:18

"Wow, all this time I've been shoplifting and scanning my card on a cereal box. "

Hmm back atcha @DumplingsAndStew

Chill out, I've already conceded that clearly they must exist...maybe if you RTFT it might help

I don't have a car? No way can this be a general rule!
NothingICanDo · 07/01/2021 14:20

I don't have a car? No way can this be a general rule I dont drive either. I've never had a problem packing my bags at the check out desk. This is all new to me today.

AWeeBit · 07/01/2021 14:20

I pack at my car if I can, these days. In and out of the shop as quickly as possible.

bendmeoverbackwards · 07/01/2021 14:20

@RedMarauder

You will only get told off if the queue is long and you don't keep up with the cashier's scan speed.

Depending on the cashier's scanning speed I can either get it all in bags or part of it in bags.

Some Aldis and Lidls now have self-service tills. If you wish to pack all your stuff and you have a basket of stuff then use one of those.

Ridiculous way to treat a paying customer! Pack straight into your bags and ignore the telling off.
grumpymacgrumpface · 07/01/2021 14:21

I try to pack into open bags in the trolley but if the checkout operator is getting ahead of me I'll just sweep stuff straight into the trolley - I think that's fair to both of us. Generally speaking I can keep up but there's one man in our local Aldi who I think is jet-propelled - either that or he starts scanning my shopping before I've picked it!

SerenityFlowers · 07/01/2021 14:24

Trolley Bags are the way to go. The smaller ones fit perfectly in the Aldi shallow trolleys. I always just chuck everything straight in at the till and never a problem to keep up. Oh, and our local Aldi staff are lovely - always a friendly smile and a hello, never seen them grumble at anyone even the odd slow person.

movingonup20 · 07/01/2021 14:25

I usually pack at the till but I can keep up with the cashier and am usually on foot so don't buy huge amounts at once, so annoying when people are slowly putting stuff into bags, it's not how the store is set up.

If you want a full service supermarket shop elsewhere
