To think Lidl packing policy is bonkers...?

I take my shopping bags to Lisl. At the till they think they are safer/ customers are quicker if they put their shopping in a basket 1st then took basket over to side and pack there coz of COVID..
I pointed out to the cashier that I would ve in the shop less time if i put shopping straight into my bags and walked out...id also be near her the exact same amout of time. Am i thick or something?
In effect customers are packing twice/ loitering longer.

They had the packing rules up in Aldi briefly in the March lockdown (for the first time) but then took them down again.

One of the reasons I never shop there anymore (that and the rotten fruit and veg and tasteless own brand items)

I'd rather shop in Aldi or Lidl than somewhere that charges you 30-40% more for the 'privilege' of having five types of baked beans to choose from, a much larger and busier shop to get round so shopping takes longer, fresh produce that is no better or considerably worse, never updates their products range so there is never anything new or exciting, and takes 50% longer at the till. Shopping at Sainsbury's or Tesco is a thoroughly miserable and irritating experience.

I put it in the trolley then pack it at the boot of the car.
That way I can take my time and pack it as I want it.

You should pack away from the till. Always been the case. In these times you should take your trolly to your car and do it there so you are not loitering by the shelf area.

As I and others have told you, it is not the case in our local shops so it must depend. You should pack at the car is also a rule that cannot exist as not everyone brings a car to the supermarket.

What am I hearing this in an ‘Allo ‘Allo style cod-Nazi accent?

Was in Lidl yesterday, and most people were packing straight into their bags. As the customer base can be quite elderly, they won't be rushed.

I packed my Mum's shop into a bag, but put mine in the trolley and did it at the shelf.

I always pack at the till in Aldi. I have a toddler or two with me and there's no way I can get it all out again. I find if I say to the checkout worker nicely please can they slow down they have always been kind enough to do so. I try to shop at quiet times and let people go in front of me to pay if they just have a basket.

A 10 foot banner! Where? Seriously... in England or somewhere else? Is anyone in Lidl now and could send a photo?

I'm often in a bit of a rush but surely couldn't have missed this.

I'd go myself and check but I've already cracked open the red.

Haggertyjane · 08/01/2021 17:54

Our local Lidl and Aldi allow us to pack straight into bags, but you have to be awfully quick.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/01/2021 18:02

People who pack their shopping directly into many bags at the till in Aldi & Lidl, slowing down the whole operation, deserve a special place in hell.

  1. put items on conveyer
  2. cashier scans them
  3. place scanned shopping back into trolley
  4. go to the Shelf of Shame & fiddle with your groceries, sorting into whichever bags you fancy until the cows come home if you so wish.

Just don’t clog the checkout.

Saying this as someone with a physical disability using crutches, so time in a queue where I’m not moving is sodding painful, waiting for Mary to decide if her gin might squash her loaf etc.

If, like me, you need to shop with someone (and it’s a big load), send player 2 with Ann empty trolley to start the post-cashier stacking into the trolley whilst you load the belt on the other end.

Also doing to hell - people who pack, then act aghast, flapping at pockets or tossing through handbags for their cash or cards. It’s hardly a surprise you have to pay for your groceries, so check where your purse or wallet is while you queue up.

Bloody hate shopping. Can you tell?

My elderly father once got told off for having his trolley 'on the wrong side' in Lidl. He is left handed and only has sight in one eye! He was not very pleased.

CorianderBee · 08/01/2021 18:05

They've always done that.. it's not a Covid policy

ultrablue · 08/01/2021 18:16

@insancerre

Lidl and Aldi have always had this policy The cashier puts everything in your trolley and then you pack it on the packing shelf or into your boot It does hold up the queue if people pack at the till
I seem to remember Kwik Save had this policy back in the 80's. Cashiers would load it into an empty trolley as you loaded items from your trolley onto the belt
SpudsandGravy · 08/01/2021 18:29

When I go to Aldi I pack at the side as I'm a slow packer, but others in the queue ahead of me sometimes put their stuff straight into their bags. I've never seen the staff take issue with that.

I really don't get what you're saying. Whats the difference with putting all heavy shopping on the conveyer first, delicate food on last, throw heavy stuff into the bottom of 3 open bags in the trolley, delicate stuff on top. Why would I throw it into a trolley to take out again? as the last item is scanned its all packed.
Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2021 14:38

@starfishmummy

I just have the big trolley bags open in my trolley - I just put things into those as quickly as I put in the trolley. I just stick them in anyhow so Im not faffing making sure they are in the right bag etc, i put squashables last on the conveyor so they go on the top of the bags. No cashier has complained yet.
