My son just changed my phone settings for me so the font is big and I can read everything. I'm just turned 43 and I just felt properly old for the first time. Boo! I'm waiting for new glasses which should help but I've always had perfect vision until the last couple of years. Poor me Grin

What was it that made you realise you are no longer a youngster? Please.help me feel less alone in my sudden dotage!

For me it’s when I have to state my date of birth and spin that blasted wheel! I’m spinning backwards for ages!!

nickymanchester · 07/01/2021 09:24

I'm in my 50s and the one thing that really hit me, as others have mentioned, is when I found out that I needed varifocals.

MrsMop1964 · 07/01/2021 09:27

when I realised my work colleagues were younger than my kids.

Charley50 · 07/01/2021 09:28

When I realised that young people today think so differently from people my age. E.g. that young faces need Botox, that people can change sex and if I say they can't I'm being 'unkind', and anxiety is a reason for not doing things.

Roselilly36 · 07/01/2021 09:28

My knees are making me feel ancient at the moment!

Charley50 · 07/01/2021 09:29

Btw the things I wrote above don't actually make me feel old, they just make me wonder at the strange direction the world is choosing.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2021 09:31

@MrsMop1964

when I realised my work colleagues were younger than my kids.
Or were not even born when I started my job. Or when you realise that there are now adults that were born in this century.

When they were commemorating something that happened 50 years ago and it was in the same decade as I was born.

I've also had the 'these things happen to our eyes when we age' comment from my optician who looks like a child and nowhere near old enough to be a graduate professional.

Teenageromance · 07/01/2021 09:32

Not being able to work technology - of any kind but particularly the tv remote. I’m a scientist for goodness sake!

RuthTopp · 07/01/2021 09:38

Having to wear varifocals.
When someone is on a talk show and it is said they have had 2 No.1s and 1,000,000 sales of their latest , and you think ' Who' ?
And yes the Police / Doctors etc seem to get younger all the time .Wink

snowstorm2012 · 07/01/2021 09:40

When I listen to Kisstory and my fave songs are on there which I thought were pretty recent Grin

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 07/01/2021 09:42

Aw @NovemberR I doubt it was cause you were ''old" - I recoil if anyone goes to hug me - I hate 'friendly' hugs! I'm a bit of a weirdo though so 🤷‍♀️

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 07/01/2021 09:50

Well I'm only 30 but a lot of people I work with (PhD students mostly) are younger - during a conversation about driving, realised most of them had never used a paper A-Z!! or had to drive anywhere without a satnav/smartphone! and also had no idea what ceefax/teletext was! That made me feel old!

Also when teaching uni students, a year or so ago the new freshers were born after 2000 - I clearly remember the millenium (although I was only 11)!

Had another of these moments when I was about 18 and a beaver scout leader - one of my beavers (aged about 6/7) asked me if I'd heard of this new band - the spice girls! He had no idea that that was the second time around for them!

Lifeisabeach09 · 07/01/2021 09:50

When I play music from the 80s, 90s, noughties, or refer to older song artists and actors and my daughter or colleagues don't have a clue what or who they are.
Working with people who were born after a finished secondary school!
My shite metabolism and sluggish digestion!!

Oh, God, this. One of the trainees I was mentoring was more impressed that I found my way to one of our client sites 100 miles away from memory alone than my encyclopedic knowledge of all aspects of our profession, even though it was a fairly simple route and he knew I had been a good few times before.

ChaoticFruitCake · 07/01/2021 09:56

Helen Daniels is dead? I thought she was still painting in the Bungle Bungles!

ExConstance · 07/01/2021 10:05

I'm so old I could be mother to all my office based staff - and some of them are menopausal ! It really hits me when one or other of them will talk about problems their mother has, such as bad knees and said mother is 5 years younger than me.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/01/2021 10:07

When it turned out my very own children had not idea who Sade was.

Heathens.

VinylDetective · 07/01/2021 10:08

When I tried to get up to stand on a chair and just couldn’t do it. It was fine again the next day. I’m much older than all you spring chickens here though!

OohImBlindedByTheLights · 07/01/2021 10:32

Last year when I decided to try keep up with the office chat and watch love island (ok would have been the last summer love island.... so 2019?).... anyway, saw one of the girls wearing a beautiful dress and went to buy it but quickly realised I don't go clubbing anymore and have no where to go out wearing something like that haha!!

Also when I watch make up tutorials and think I'm gunna buy that eyeshadow palette then again realise, I have no where to go with a full face of make up like the girl on the tutorial lol!

Blinkyblonkyblimey · 07/01/2021 10:33

I genuinely remember when it was all fields round here! Also having a discussion about something and realising it happened 50 years ago. Shock

draughtycatflap · 07/01/2021 10:42

When I’m bending to sit on the toilet and I’m farting before I even hit the seat.

TheDogsMother · 07/01/2021 10:42

@howrudeforme

When signing up to something online and they need my date of birth and I’m scrolling and scrolling and scrolling back down the years for ages to get my year of birth.
This ^^.
dingoesatemybaby · 07/01/2021 10:45

The last time I went out with friends and got 'drunk'. I'm 35 (was 34 then, before covid of course).

The next day I actually thought I was dying. Never used to get hangovers and used to drink a LOT more.

TheDogsMother · 07/01/2021 10:45

In the car with DH when I said as a kid I used to play in fields and woods right here. We were on the M25 !!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/01/2021 10:45

Ha, I suppose I have eyeshadow palettes older than these girls.
