My son just changed my phone settings for me so the font is big and I can read everything. I'm just turned 43 and I just felt properly old for the first time. Boo! I'm waiting for new glasses which should help but I've always had perfect vision until the last couple of years. Poor me Grin

What was it that made you realise you are no longer a youngster? Please.help me feel less alone in my sudden dotage!

I'm 42 and I now need reading glasses AND contact lenses.....

Nordman · 07/01/2021 01:01

@Maxsaidno

I referred to Helen Daniels on a Teams call the other day... tumbleweed. I proceeded to explain who she was, referencing Kylie in the process. The group of twenty-something colleagues refused to believe Kylie was ever in Neighbours and were convinced I was winding them up. I felt horribly past it.
I remember her death like it was yesterday Wink

This whole thread is making me feel a bit old ( don't worry I can take it) the only saving grace is that no-one has said 'back in my day'

RoseMartha · 07/01/2021 01:05

Couple of years ago when I realised I could not see close up with contact lenses in, when I wear them now I always have a pair of reading glasses on my head , sometimes a pair of sunglasses as well!

pastaparadise · 07/01/2021 01:05

I saw toys from my 1970s childhood in a museum - care bears, speak and spell, little professor etc

RealisticSketch · 07/01/2021 01:05

I am very happy that me and dh have been indoctrinating the DC on our popular culture such as Blackadder or flash Gordon so that when we trot out some popular culture reference that is a good 3 decades old the entire family can join in and add the punch line... No tumble weed here. I consider it vital to my sense of well being their education.

When I realised some of the teachers at work went to school with my eldest son. One of the PE teachers has had sleepovers at my house. I remember shouting at him to go to sleep at 2amHmm

Also during last pregnancy I started squinting at the TV or to read signs. I thought it was a pregnancy thing. However one year later it turns out it is old age and I need glassesSad

I remember contemplating that elasticated waisted trousers might not be a bad thing. I haven't caved yet, but the thought was there. I am also at the stage where I don't give a toss what anybody thinks of me and realising that this must mean I am now officially old.

icklepiglet · 07/01/2021 01:08

The first time I was ID'd in a bar and felt flattered instead of annoyed.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 07/01/2021 01:16

Notashandyta: I love your comment about “having a fall”, it’s spot on. I sadly only enjoy telly these days with the subtitles on. I tell myself it’s because people mumble too much. I also dislike a lot of modern pop music and the comment another poster made about not knowing what is number one in the charts really resonates with me. What does help is that my grown up children don’t like much modern music either and get nostalgic about 90s or 2000s music (as do I)

When my DS asked me "Mum, did you write with a quill when you were at school?" (he is a big Harry Potter fan!)

howrudeforme · 07/01/2021 01:24

When signing up to something online and they need my date of birth and I’m scrolling and scrolling and scrolling back down the years for ages to get my year of birth.

FunkBus · 07/01/2021 01:31

I don't really feel old but I literally have no idea about any popular music at all. I remember my mum being the same and I was so disbelieving that she had never heard of Eminem or whoever. And now I'm exactly the same. I read stuff like "Lil FuckStick286 has been sent to prison" on the fucking BBC and I don't know who they are! The BBC ffs, it's not like some obscure publication so these people are obviously well known.

It's not even like I'm trying to be some 'ugh kids music these days', I would love to know what they like but I'm right out of the loop.

Most of it I've heard is utter tosh, however.

Grin - I would usually say 'little bggr' but not sure if that's PC or acceptable in younger age groups...!!
Quaagars · 07/01/2021 01:42

When a new teacher at DS's school started, and she looked about 12.
(No joke)
Was a common theme throughout late primary as lots of teachers looked to barely be out of school themselves and I'm like WTF Grin
Teachers are supposed to be grey, and in their sixties or something lol
(yes, yes I know this totally shows my age Grin

Whatsnewpussyhat · 07/01/2021 01:53

When you get side eyes by men in the street and you realise the look has changed from lust to disgust.

When you need a warm up before you can get out of bed.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/01/2021 01:56

When I accidentally referred to the TA as a kid. I immediately apologiesed and did the "sorry, you know me, I've just got so many of them" but yeah, 5 yo DSs teacher and 121 could legit be my kids

Guineapigbridge · 07/01/2021 02:00

My five year old asked me if tyrannasaurus lived on Earth when I was a child Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/01/2021 02:00

Recently. Dd, who is 12 offered me fashion advice the other day. Fgs. This because she hates my dog walking coat. I don’t either tbh so I told her I don’t care what I look like. Then had this oh shit moment. Now that makes me old.

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2021 02:03

CarrieMoonbeams · 07/01/2021 02:06

When DH and I were on holiday, there was a choice of 3 pubs where we could go for lunch - we chose the one with the prettiest hanging baskets.

loubieloo4 · 07/01/2021 02:10

@CarrieMoonbeams we choose the one without music blasting!

Itawapuddytat · 07/01/2021 02:12

A couple of months ago I realised that when my mum was my current age, I had just graduated Uni. My DD is only 7 and DS just started secondary school.... Oh yes, and I need glasses now.
