to think if you're short you can't enjoy a good bath

Have always hated having baths. I make it all nice, get in, then spend an uncomfortable 15 mins lying on my back and slowly sliding into the bubbles until I'm underwater. So many books have wavy pages from my bath disasters.

I've since realised that the average person can brace their feet against the end of the bath, thus staying upright and have a relaxing soak without fear of drowning.

The thing is I'm not even that short (5'2'') and have always had average sized bathtubs, so am I missing some kind of essential bath life skill?

Short mumsnetters please do let me know Grin

You need a mat under your bum to stop you slipping.

One of the most unexpected side effects of having children has been such improved baths. Now that I own a bath thermometer I can finally run one to the perfect temperature and the mat solves the slippage issue.

VienneseWhirligig · 04/01/2021 17:57

I think you're right. I have the same issue and I'm slightly taller than you.

Adelino · 04/01/2021 17:57

YANBU.
I bought off plan and requested a smaller bath.
Could a decently thick bath cushion help?

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2021 17:58

I'm 5 foot 2 and would happily spend my whole life in the bath.

BrokenCircle · 04/01/2021 17:58

Put a bath mat in the bath. Job done.

Myshinynewname2021 · 04/01/2021 17:58

There are short baths. I know as I have one and only just realised why I can't have a decent bath.

Sarahandduck18 · 04/01/2021 17:58

Bath pillow.

needsahouseboy · 04/01/2021 17:59

Which is why I want a Japanese soak tub bath :)

petitdonkey · 04/01/2021 17:59

My spare bedroom has an en-suite with a short bath. It was a necessary size as the room is small but I blimming love it!! I even get to bend my knees to brace so can comfortably read a book. I never ever use the massive swimming pool Bath that I put in the main bathroom!!

ZoeTurtle · 04/01/2021 17:59

I'm 5'8" and have to have either shoulders or knees sticking out of the nice hot water.

LadyJaye · 04/01/2021 18:00

I lived in Japan for a while, where bathing is integral to the culture.

As soon as I can afford it, I'm ripping the stupid long, shallow bath out of my bathroom and replacing it with an ofuro (a short, deep 'soaking tub') that you can effectively sit upright in.

I'm 5'8", btw, so it's not just a short person problem.

Orf1abc · 04/01/2021 18:00

Put your feet on the base of the bath. Or get a less slippy one/ buy a mat. As a fellow short person I've never had this problem.

Shmithecat2 · 04/01/2021 18:01

I'm opposite end of the scale - 6'3 and can't enjoy a good bath. No chance and having my knees AND my boobs under the water at the same time.

Londonnight · 04/01/2021 18:01

Bath mat. I am 5ft 1", so even shorter than you and I don't have a problem in the bath if I use a mat.

GypsyLee · 04/01/2021 18:02

I'm 4ft 11, and manage fine.
Wtf are you doing to slide under water? Grin
My dh is 6ft 4, now he struggles to fit in the bath, he's so long.

purplemunkey · 04/01/2021 18:02

I’m 5’2’’ and I could also live in the bath! I’ve always thought it’s better being short as I don’t have knees or shoulders poking out and getting cold. I’ve never had the problem you’ve had, maybe I’ve always had small baths? I’ve lived in a number of houses though. Maybe I’ve got a bum that sticks to baths Grin

Rocococo · 04/01/2021 18:05

I sometimes invent a sort of sideways step to boost me up the bath.

fourandnomore · 04/01/2021 18:05

I’m the opposite as being tall i always struggle fitting in the bath! There are quite a lot of different bath lengths though but we didn’t choose ours so I never go in it sadly. First child birth the birthing pool was just so they suggested having a bath and as I tried to get into it I realised it just wasn’t going to happen Grin

JustanotherTuesday · 04/01/2021 18:06

I'm 4'10" and have this problem, I can never get comfortable in the bath due to slipping down the bath. I'd much rather have a shower.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/01/2021 18:08

Surely 5 foot 2 is perfect bathing height. Where are your feet? Braced on floor, or on the wall of the bath? Are you using greasy bath oils or something?

I'm also tall, and baths are not at all relaxing for me, as half of me gets chilly.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 04/01/2021 18:08

as someone up thread has said if your tall bits of you stick out of the water and get cold

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/01/2021 18:08

I'm only 5'4" - and I have an extra large bath - no problems?
I'd rather be too short than too tall and have to sit in the bath with my knees scrunched around my ears.

2BDIs · 04/01/2021 18:08

You either have a giant bath or are about 4ft tall if you are slipping all the way under and getting books wet. I'm 5ft 6 and would love to be shorter, as I get in and me knees stick out and get cold or I have to wedge my foot up again the tap as there is nowhere for my legs so my calf and foot are out the water and cold Sad

BornIn78 · 04/01/2021 18:10

I'm the same.

Bath mats don't work, pillows don't work. We have a ridiculously big bath in our main bathroom though, plenty of room for 2.

So we're redoing our en-suite and having a small bath put in. I looked at a stone Japanese soak tub but they're £6k. We are going for a the smallest bath from Victoria Plum, I've actually been and sat in one to test before we ordered, and it's fine.

Thimbleberries · 04/01/2021 18:11

I like slipping under, would much prefer all of me to be covered! I have the problem of a standard length bath but really shallow - I think it's a water saving feature. I want to replace it with something deeper, maybe a normal bath, but ideally something that would be wider in the middle (do they make those? Like a capital D, not a P as that doesn't give the extra room where I need it!). Japanese ones sound lovely, but can't see them fitting in a small bathroom in place of a normal size bath with shower over, especially as I'd still need the shower bit!
