to think if you're short you can't enjoy a good bath

Have always hated having baths. I make it all nice, get in, then spend an uncomfortable 15 mins lying on my back and slowly sliding into the bubbles until I'm underwater. So many books have wavy pages from my bath disasters.

I've since realised that the average person can brace their feet against the end of the bath, thus staying upright and have a relaxing soak without fear of drowning.

The thing is I'm not even that short (5'2'') and have always had average sized bathtubs, so am I missing some kind of essential bath life skill?

Short mumsnetters please do let me know Grin

@purplemunkey
I must similarly have a bum that sticks to baths Grin
A hidden talent I never knew about.

YANBU

In the house I grew up in we only had a bath, no shower. And the bath we did have was shorter than normal to fit in the space. Never had an issue with getting comfy in it. Hate baths everywhere else I’ve ever tried them because like you said I can’t get comfy and slip down, I much prefer showers anyway but very occasionally fancy a hot bath. It’s never worth it, and I no longer even have those passing fancies for one! My mum has since had our original bath ripped out and replaced with a lovely shower instead as well, so can’t even have one there

Thimbleberries · 04/01/2021 18:12

(oh I've just looked, and while D-shaped baths are indeed a thing, they aren't what I mean by it - they don't actually stick out in a D-shape to make them wider than normal in the middle. they just have one flat side to go against the wall.)

DRC2004 · 04/01/2021 18:12

I’m jealous OP. 😂 My partner and I are very tall and our flat doesn’t have a full length bath. I didn’t realise until after we moved in!

ttigerlilly · 04/01/2021 18:13

I'm 5'10 and whilst I don't slip there is always a part of me which gets cold even if I fill the bath right to the top. When I was pregnant my tummy stuck out the water and got cold Grin

HaroldMeeker · 04/01/2021 18:14

It works both ways. I'm 5'7 and have either shoulders or knees out of the water at all times. I therefore shower as its not remotely relaxing or enjoyable having cold bits.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2021 18:16

I feel your pain op Grin I'm also 5'2 and hate the feel of bath mats. So I shower now . It's not comfortable otherwise.

NoProblem123 · 04/01/2021 18:16

I think your bath issues are more than offset by your rainfall showers Grin

zeitgeista · 04/01/2021 18:16

whereas i'm 5'5 and too tall to enjoy a good bath.

maybe 5'3.5 is the happy medium.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/01/2021 18:18

I’m 5.1 and I love a bath, I lay right down into the water with my kindle iron the caddy, it’s bliss until I get too hot & sweaty.

Screwcorona · 04/01/2021 18:23

I have the opposite problem. At 5ft9 I cant fit in the bath so have to have my legs either stocking out or totally bent. If my legs are straight I have my bum at the head end. You must have a longer bath than me

HappyPumpkin81 · 04/01/2021 18:24

I bought a 150cm bath to fit my tiny bathroom. It is fantastic and really deep so I can soak for ages. I'm 5'4" and can't get comfortable in longer baths. I think the bath had to be shipped from Germany though 😬

BitOfFun · 04/01/2021 18:26

I'm 5'1" and appreciate what you're saying. When we had our bathroom re-done a few years ago, I chose a bath which was 1500mm long, rather than the standard 1800mm, so we could fit in a separate shower enclosure. Being able to wallow without slipping has been a happy coincidence.

NemoRocksMyWorld · 04/01/2021 18:26

I'm 5ft 2. I have a standard size bath, but it has a curved shower screen. I push the shower screen back so it goes over the end of the bath. I then brace my feet against the bottom of the shower screen.

If I don't do this I have the same problem as you. Having a new bathroom fitted with a 1500 bath... Can't wait! 6ft 4 husband might struggle though!

bilbodog · 04/01/2021 18:26

Use a plastic foot stool/step at the end of the bath on its side to brace your feet against.

Staffy1 · 04/01/2021 18:27

Depends on the size of the bath. Our old house had one that was just right for me. This one is too small.

Godimabitch · 04/01/2021 18:28

You are absolutely right and it makes me so mad. I love a bath. But it takes so much work to keep in a comfortable position without being able to reach the other side Angry

HugeAckmansWife · 04/01/2021 18:28

I'm 5ft and bought a house that happened to have a corner bath. Always assumed I'd rip it out but it's a perfect length and much wider so when dd decides to ruin my bath by joining me there's lots of space even though she's 9!

BitOfFun · 04/01/2021 18:30

I cross-posted with you, Pumpkin! Ours wasn't particularly difficult to source though; we got it from an ordinary bathroom range.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 04/01/2021 18:32

Yanbu. Our bath is enormous (to me) so I only have baths in hotels or holiday houses. Probably haven't had a bath in 2 years :(

1forAll74 · 04/01/2021 18:32

I am 5ft 2ins, and love having a bath, and have a normal sized bath. I don't fill it up too high with water, and lie in it without fear of drowning !
One of my cats always comes to sit on the edge of the bath when I am in it, so wouldn't want him to fall in and drown if the bath was too full of soapy water. !

Tempusfudgeit · 04/01/2021 18:36

Sorted!

to think if you're short you can't enjoy a good bath
IdblowJonSnow · 04/01/2021 18:43

I'm 5 feet and if I'm lying down it's almost perfect but if I dont want to get my hair wet then I slip down. Would a bath mat definitely prevent that?

abstractzebra · 04/01/2021 18:46

I agree (even though I don't even have a bath now!).
I used to date someone who had a small, deep bath with a seat in it. It was lovely Grin

lemonysnickett88 · 04/01/2021 18:49

I'm 5 foot 7 but I don't brace my feet on the bath, I don't slip in either. The bath is a few inches longer than me though so not massive
