to think if you're short you can't enjoy a good bath

Have always hated having baths. I make it all nice, get in, then spend an uncomfortable 15 mins lying on my back and slowly sliding into the bubbles until I'm underwater. So many books have wavy pages from my bath disasters.

I've since realised that the average person can brace their feet against the end of the bath, thus staying upright and have a relaxing soak without fear of drowning.

The thing is I'm not even that short (5'2'') and have always had average sized bathtubs, so am I missing some kind of essential bath life skill?

Short mumsnetters please do let me know Grin

@took yes I do the mermaid thing too Grin

NiceGerbil · 04/01/2021 20:29

We accidentally bought a smallish bath. It fits me perfectly (5'3). DH can't fit in it.

Oh well it was a genuine accident and he prefers a shower anyway.

EllaView · 04/01/2021 20:32

I’m 4’9. I can actually float in our bath. Which is quite relaxing, but quite impractical. I have never found a solution - pillows, mats, nothing works!

BurtonHouse · 04/01/2021 20:33

If you run an inch of cold water in before adding the hot and don't swirl it around too much before getting in your bum will stick to the bottom so you don't slip.

Scarlettpixie · 04/01/2021 20:34

@ZoeTurtle

I'm 5'8" and have to have either shoulders or knees sticking out of the nice hot water.
Same here.
BramblyHedge · 04/01/2021 20:34

We recently redid our bathroom and got a shorter bath. Perfect for me at 5ft2in and husband doesn't seem bothered

Mypathtriedtokillme · 04/01/2021 20:37

I’m 6ft and more of me is out if the water than in it.

babbi · 04/01/2021 20:37

You’re definitely not the only one . !!
I’m 5 ft 1 and float away ,. I only weigh 7 stone 8 ...
I use a wee foot stool at the bottom of the bath 🛀 to keep me upright !

sadcatdiary · 04/01/2021 20:41

My "official" height is 5'2". Grin I'm probably nearer 5'1" in reality. I love a good bath!

zeitgeista · 04/01/2021 20:43

this is why sit down showers are superior

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 04/01/2021 20:46

I have a little shelf thing for shampoo that I put behind my back to shorten the bath, doesn’t move and works great.

YABU to ever knock baths.

qwertyuiop098 · 04/01/2021 20:47

I’m 5’4 and can only just keep myself up with my toes stretched!

Angelik · 04/01/2021 20:48

5.2 here. It is all about the angle of the bath end you are lying against. I looked at probably 100's of baths when doing bathroom a couple of years ago and got one with the softest angle possible. works a flipping treat! My 6ft dh likes it as he feels he lie back and it's kinder on his back.

AlwaysLatte · 04/01/2021 20:50

I'm like that, I'm not short but our old Victorian bath is enormous. My Husband is 6'3 and he loves it. I've got one of those wire things that goes across the top to put book/soap etc on and I tend to put my foot against that otherwise I'm under!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 04/01/2021 20:53

Im 5ft1 and have the same problem. The only solution I have found is to put one foot against the folding shower screen to hold myself up. Of course then my leg gets cold. If I ever own my own house I will be testing all the baths in the shops until I find a perfect one. Not sure my landlord will agree to replacing mine just because I'm too short for it Grin

GlowingOrb · 04/01/2021 20:54

I’m only 5’6” and had to buy an oversized tub so that most of my body isn’t sticking out of the water and I could actually enjoy my soak.

GlowingOrb · 04/01/2021 20:55

Oh, I should add, I’m all leg.

ShowOfHands · 04/01/2021 21:01

I'm only an inch taller than you op and a standard 1700 bath is perfect. I can have water over my boobs, legs straight, fully immersed with my shoulders, neck and head poking out. Perfect.

Ginkypig · 04/01/2021 21:05

@HaroldMeeker

It works both ways. I'm 5'7 and have either shoulders or knees out of the water at all times. I therefore shower as its not remotely relaxing or enjoyable having cold bits.
This!

I actually do love a bath when I’m away though as I don’t have one at home but I do spend the whole bath periodically sliding up and down so I can get the shoulders or (but never both) knees under the water to warm them up.

Sometimes I get a couple of flannels and put them on my shoulders dunking them into the water every so often to heat it up again, a bit like a wet scarf Grin

Goldieloxx · 04/01/2021 21:06

We have a short bath, more comfortable and takes up less space

Ginfordinner · 04/01/2021 21:08

@ZoeTurtle

I'm 5'8" and have to have either shoulders or knees sticking out of the nice hot water.
Same. I'm 5'7". Either I have a short bath or the OP has a longer bath than I do. Even if I was 5'2" I wouldn't be slipping under water. And I thought our bath was a normal length.
partyatthepalace · 04/01/2021 21:23

I have never had this.

Perhaps because fat and short.

Hip width make up for lack of leg length??

You could try gaining a lockdown 15.

Maray1967 · 04/01/2021 21:29

I have a 150cm space bath, the type with the wider shower end Perfect for me at 5 ft 4. I know what you mean OP - I slide down a standard 170 cm one. Mind you, the shower bath is hard work to clean - you do your back in trying to reach over to clean the wall side. But great to bathe in.

Nomnomarrgh · 04/01/2021 21:37

I’m the same height as you and am completely flummoxed on how you are doing this. I have some wavy books but that’s because sometimes I drop them in the bath.

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 04/01/2021 21:41

Argh yes this is so annoying! You plant your bum down and gingerly lean back, and all is well until you get to the last cm, when you lose your grippage, and you go flying down the bath, hastily sitting up before you go under, soaking your book, candles and drink in the process. I wonder if it's worth siliconing the bottom of the bath to make it non slip? 🤔
