Christmas cards are nice to receive and send.

Not wanting to be called 'cis' is not transphobic. Neither is Supporting trans people while being against self ID.

Dogs shouldn't always be on a lead.

MILs are not always a PITA / pushy / horrible / toxic.

Most dogs are ok to be left alone for a few hours here and there.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 04/01/2021 11:35

I think when you're talking about something as complex as race and gender you can't apply black and whites like "All whites are oppressors of POC" or "All men are oppressors of women

Well it's a good job I didn't say that then - I said white people as a class are oppressors of POC and men as a class oppress women. Do you understand the difference in that and saying "all white people are oppressors"?

It's not the exact same experience, and I doubt any of them would claim they understand totally, but most POC are happy for the allies and except them into the fold

I wasn't talking about them accepting allies into the fold. I was talking about POC accepting white people who identify as being a POC into the fold. That means POC accepting them for who they say the are are, believing them unequivocally and never casting judgement and treating them as if they do have the same barriers around race as them. Would you support this? And if you wouldn't, then why should women accept AMAB people into their fold. Because it is the exact same situation

In some cases white people have managed to pretend to be black, based on false pretenses (completely false including made up education/backgrounds etc). Should these people be embraced? No. Anymore than any liars/fraudsters should.

So why aren't men who claim to be women liars and fraudsters? Why is their identity blindly accepted as they push their way into our circles?

Frankly no two women have the EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE.

Women (who are actual female sex to be clear) will experience the exact same levels on discriminations as the next woman. Maybe not the exact same set of circumstances but on principle the discrimination happens because of the sex we were born not the gender we are assigned. Do you think anyone asks a baby girl what their gender is before performing FGM?

But many TW will face the prejudice that women do in the workplace/world once they have transitioned, along with the prejudice that they will face with being trans, and if they are willing to fight the good fight for greater pay equality, and better access to healthcare, and education, etc, etc, etc. Then I have no issues with that. As I have no issues with support from men who also support womens rights.

You are correct, but that is
A. Not for women to fight - men can fight on behalf of their class if they wish, and
B. Doesn't mean, because they have some vague link to some of the issues women face, that they can bloody without wears iron be accepted into women-only folds. Women fought too hard and too long for their own spaces for a man to perpetuate a female stereotype and claim he's one of us now.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2021 11:44

Because I can't figure out how someone who is 5 inches shorter than me and 2 stone heavier is a dress size smaller than I am
Muscle weighs more than fat, this could be a very toned person with lots of muscle who is taller but smaller in dress size. It's very common for others to get someone's weight so wrong based on appearance or on paper.

Trans women are women.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2021 11:48

Who is shorter * I meant. Not taller

heydoggee · 04/01/2021 11:51

Fat people aren't greedy. Or lazy. Or pitiful.

Trans women are women.

Gin is vile.

Otellie · 04/01/2021 11:58

What experience is that then? Lower pay because of their sex? No.
Sexual harressment because of their possession of a vagina? No again
Must be their ability to get pregnant and the issues around maternity rights in the work place. Oh wait, they can't and they don't have those issues do they.

In fact the only thing they have in common with women in the workplace is

  1. they're human
  2. they like to often wear clothes that many women often wear.

That's it. There's nothing else is there. There's a reason for that.

FestiveFruitloop · 04/01/2021 12:00

I wish Jeremy Corbyn had got in, he had some good policies.
Most people nowadays don't know proper socialism from their left elbow.

pictish · 04/01/2021 12:01

I used to be a very fat person. I can tell you now that I was both greedy and lazy. Some are. There’s an unpopular opinion for you.
I’m slim now and I have to eat well and in proportion, as well as exercise regularly to maintain it. 🤷‍♀️

I concur. I have been both overweight and a healthy weight. I am currently the former, this time last year I was a perfect weight, a year before that I was overweight.

The only difference is greed and laziness. No that isn't the case for everyone but sometimes it is.

CounsellorTroi · 04/01/2021 12:08

Lots of bio women don’t have the ability to get pregnant for one reason or another. They’re still women aren’t they?

IamTomHanks · 04/01/2021 12:09

Do you think anyone asks a baby girl what their gender is before performing FGM?

Do you think someone asks a baby boy what their gender is before they circumcise him?

Women (who are actual female sex to be clear) will experience the exact same levels on discriminations as the next woman.

No they don't. Sexism and gender based discrimination is not the same worldwide. It is not the same in every culture. I do not and have never experienced or will ever experience the same hardships a woman born in Sudan will experience. I will never and have never had to worry about FGM for example. She will always have it far worse than me. That doesn't mean my, or her, experiences are any less valid.

I am open to the idea that women are not all some giant homogenous group, just like POC aren't. My upbringing, my culture, my personal experiences are what make me who I am. I would have massive issue with a women from the UK pretending that they are a half First Nations Canadian women, or even thinking they can pretend we have the same issues. Just like an African American will have an issue with a white person pretending to be them. Just like a transperson would have issue if I pretended to be trans. That's a unique part of their identity and culture.

Because the person is appropriating a unique culture, not half the human race, which is no more a unique culture than men are a unique culture.

My vagina is not a unique part of my identity or culture. 4 billion people have them. Nothing unique about it.

Female is not a culture.

We may have some shared experiences based on overriding gender stereotypes. We have similar battles to fight. Just like African Americans and Latinos can claim similar shared experiences and battles. But they are not the same culture.

My feminism embraces women of all cultural backgrounds, while respecting that their outlook and cultural values are different then mine. It even includes people born male, who have transitioned to present as female. It includes people born female who have transitioned to male and still want to support feminist issues.

We all have similar issues to face and fight and I prefer to focus on where we align.

Also, what spaces? What fucking space exists in the world that only open in the presence of a vagina. Tell me that and I'll worry about transwomen getting into them.

And with that, I'm heading home. Agree to disagree.

HPLikecraft · 04/01/2021 12:09

No, you’re not emetophobic just because you think vomit is disgusting. We ALL do.

And your MIL doesn’t have narcissistic personality disorder just because she can be a bit self centred.

Too many armchair psychologists on here.

BlackCakeyStuff · 04/01/2021 12:10

Mumsnet shouldn't delete posts or threads. Bunfights are my favourite part of the internet.

Sport is not news, and people only behave like it is because mostly men like it. You don't see the shopping or knitting Olympics, do you?

RunningFromInsanity · 04/01/2021 12:10

Fat people are lazy

Breastfeeding in public is attention seeking

Oh god, yes to this! It has always puzzled me why the outcome of people playing games has a bit section in the news.

Loads of people on mumsnet think fat people are lazy. I think you haven't understood the thread, its about opinions which are unpopular on mumsnet.
RunningFromInsanity · 04/01/2021 12:13

Blackface is only racist if it’s done in a derogatory way.
There is nothing wrong with a white child dressing up as their black footballing hero at a fancy dress party. Pocahontas/red indian fancy dress is not racist.

Otellie · 04/01/2021 12:20

Only women can get pregnant, even if not all women are able to do so.

Biological males can never ever get pregnant because they have male bodies. Clothes and feelings do not make a woman. Only biology does.

Which brings me to another unpopular one:

People who put women into a subset of their own sex class just so they can make men another subset of woman are thick and stupid. Unpopular opinion amongst the woksters I know.

Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat, a lb of feathers weighs the same as a 1lb of iron
zeitgeista · 04/01/2021 12:24

people should let others identify how they like and just let them be happy.
if you think non binary is fake, great! that's your opinion but don't try and stop people from identifiying as it if it makes them happy and more comfortable.

RunningFromInsanity · 04/01/2021 12:25

But you need a lot more feathers to make up that 1lb weight.

CounsellorTroi · 04/01/2021 12:26

If you filled two containers of identical volume with feathers and iron, which do you think would be heavier?

CAPTCHAchacha · 04/01/2021 12:26

I have a feeling this may be an unpopular opinion here: If you want to have an intelligent discussion about trans issues, go to Feminism chat. And I say that as someone who doesn’t consider myself to be a feminist.

KnitsAndGiggles · 04/01/2021 12:26

Individuals driving their car a bit less and doing their recycling won't make the blindest bit of difference to climate change.

Greta Thunberg is a gobshite

The government isn't doing too badly dealing with covid. Also I'm glad the Tories won the last election and I would vote for them again

Ohalrightthen · 04/01/2021 12:27

Having a baby you can't afford or care for properly because you "couldn't live with yourself if you had an abortion" is fucking selfish, and shitty parenting.
