To think the pacing and plot of Bridgerton were like badly written fanfic?

Weird fake conflict after wedding, resolved by curing childhood trauma after a brief declaration. Bridgerton family about to be taken over by vicarious scandal....oh wait, no they’re not. Daphne’s reputation hangs in the balance if vindictive blonde chooses to, oh no, that’s all resolved within minutes.

Daphne and Simon just make speeches at each other, seemingly written by someone who has never heard humans speak before.

I enjoyed the first few episodes, but was then just WTF?

Oh it was absolute nonsense. Enjoyable escapist soft porn nonsense.

Pandamumium · 03/01/2021 14:26

It’s absolute nonsense, but I love it!

Ultimateblends · 03/01/2021 14:27

Its a terrible programme, tongue in cheek entertainment, it was utterly brilliant -nothing-easy-watching, you're thinking too much into this one!

CoronaCurls · 03/01/2021 14:28

Yes! I totally thought it is a AU (alternate universe) fanfiction of Jane Austen, with high production values and gorgeous costumes.

Mydogisagentleman · 03/01/2021 14:31

I’ve only watched one and a half episodes, but I think I can see what’s going to happen

FrostedCranberries · 03/01/2021 14:32

It was excellent bar the sex scenes. I just dont think people like seeing ethnic minorities in costume drama, especially when they play roles of gentry. It's as if brown and yellow people should be serving the whites.

Chambored · 03/01/2021 14:35

Defo Jane Austin homage - but on acid and in technicolour. I loved it!

SparklyLeprechaun · 03/01/2021 14:37

Utter nonsense, all of it. The books are pretty boring and not that well written but passable. The series is just unwatchable.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 03/01/2021 14:38

It was trash! And utterly brilliant. Loved it.

HermioneWeasley · 03/01/2021 14:41

Loved the costumes, no issue with the colour blind casting and while what I thought was the original plot (let’s pretend to be in love, oh no - we’ve actually fallen in love!) was obvious but fine, it was the plot and pacing of the second half - everything quickly resolved with no tension or suspense. It’s was rushed and poorly paced.

It’s wonderfully awful! I have watched it twice. The chemistry between the two main leads is great though they can work on their acting skills a bit.
All in all, a delightful fantasy (Jane Austin is overrated anyway).

VinylDetective · 03/01/2021 14:43

I loved it. So has everyone I know who’s watched it. Panto for adults.

Thewithesarehere · 03/01/2021 14:44

Bonus points for making the the BP of Daily Fail readers shoot through the roof! Grin

CandyLeBonBon · 03/01/2021 14:44

I love it. Queen Charlotte was deliberately cast with a black actress. Utter frivolous vacuous nonsense and a perfectly fluffy antidote to the misery and gloom of everyday life! Grin

OlderThanAverageforMN · 03/01/2021 14:44

I don't think they ever advertised it as a serious drama though. The books are terrible by all accounts, but myself and DD's did enjoy the series, it was light and fluffy, and not terribly taxing, and had lots of hot men..... what's not to like?

InescapableDeath · 03/01/2021 14:46

Seemed like a standard historical regency romance to me (written by modern authors). Enjoyed it as fluff!

Biscuitsanddoombar · 03/01/2021 14:46

Oh yes it’s obvious fanfic - at least it doesn’t take itself seriously 😆

sheworkshardforthemoney · 03/01/2021 14:53

@VinylDetective

Yes by episode 5 🥵 I had realised it was AU/ fanfic Made me like it more. Sometimes historical accuracy is very bleak/ dull

Total frivolity/ soft porn 😁
Love it

ShastaBeast · 03/01/2021 14:57

Biggest plot hole = the assumption kids make you happier as a couple. Even with servants, Queen Victoria did not enjoy having babies.

This myth is pervasive now, even for us commoners without staff.

Thewithesarehere · 03/01/2021 14:57

There are some great scenes in it. The one I really liked was....

SPOILER ALERT

.....when Daphne’s younger sister thanks her for being perfect so she didn’t have to be.

feltpens25 · 03/01/2021 15:01

I read a lot of romance novels - it’s very typical regency romance novel (obviously it’s based on a series of books) stuff. It isn’t normal period drama, it’s fluffy and a bit ridiculous with a predictable HEA which is why I think some people haven’t enjoyed it, it’s full of tropes and stereotypes. I loved every second! It was nice to have some unabashed dramatic OTT romance to escape with!

(Also the cast is the most ludicrously attractive group of people ever)

buckleten · 03/01/2021 15:17

The Duke 😍😍😍

Hankunamatata · 03/01/2021 15:21

Utterly brilliant predictable fluff with soft porn. Easy watching

VenusClapTrap · 03/01/2021 15:36

I enjoyed it well enough as escapist froth, but the dialogue, acting and plot were pretty bad. It was like a pale imitation of Harlots, which was equally colourful and no slave to historical accuracy, but had rollicking good story lines and a fantastic cast.

cattreats · 03/01/2021 15:50

As it happens, I think it is a perfect example of why we should stop complaining about cultural appropriation in art. There is no reason why a fictional experience shouldn't mess around with history and fact and borrow from other cultures. It's entertainment not fact. All this fuss about someone having to have certain characteristics in order to play a fictional role makes me very uncomfortable.
