To think the pacing and plot of Bridgerton were like badly written fanfic?

Weird fake conflict after wedding, resolved by curing childhood trauma after a brief declaration. Bridgerton family about to be taken over by vicarious scandal....oh wait, no they’re not. Daphne’s reputation hangs in the balance if vindictive blonde chooses to, oh no, that’s all resolved within minutes.

Daphne and Simon just make speeches at each other, seemingly written by someone who has never heard humans speak before.

I enjoyed the first few episodes, but was then just WTF?

@VenusClapTrap
I tried to find Harlots on iplayer yesterday but they only had series 3. Obviously I’d like to watch all series.

hiptobeasquare · 03/01/2021 15:54

I loved it. I am a major fan of regency type romances Georgette Heyer being (to me) the gold standard in the arena. I have read some of the Julia Quinn books so I wasn’t expecting great historical accuracy. It was an excellent escape. I can’t wait for season 2.

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2021 15:56

It was so bad it was actually wonderful. I loved every historically inaccurate, escapist, trashy second of it.

VenusClapTrap · 03/01/2021 15:56

That’s a shame @Chambored

Haffiana · 03/01/2021 15:57

I found it slightly jarring that all the debs and younger sisters who were meant to be 18 years old at most, were all so obviously in their mid to 20s or even older.

Pacing was jarring as well, plus some appalling anachronisms. Interfered with the enjoyment for me.

DrDavidBanner · 03/01/2021 16:03

I watched the first episode and it looks beautiful (especially the Duke) but its all quite daft isn't it? No harm in that, I think we all need a bit of escapist fluff right now.

I've started on the book but finding the characters quite irritating and smug, and I can guess the plot from 20 paces so I don't know if I'll be able to finish it.

CandyLeBonBon · 03/01/2021 16:22

I loved the integration of modern tunes into the mix. I love the modern twist it gave it. Especially like hearing billy eilish's 'bad guy' in there somewhere! Made me chuckle Grin

Lookslikerainted · 03/01/2021 16:36

It’s totally nonsense but I enjoyed the nonsense in a weird time. A nice light escape.

Paloooza · 03/01/2021 16:39

It was ok and the costumes stunning but too much sex and not enough story for me.
Much prefer sexless bbc adaptation of P&P which I,M currently binging again on Netflix

OlderThanAverageforMN · 03/01/2021 16:52

@VenusClapTrap

I enjoyed it well enough as escapist froth, but the dialogue, acting and plot were pretty bad. It was like a pale imitation of Harlots, which was equally colourful and no slave to historical accuracy, but had rollicking good story lines and a fantastic cast.
Harlots was great. Sexy romp through Georgian London.
doadeer · 03/01/2021 16:59

The books are just Mills and Boon style. It's a specific romantic genre. They all have the same formula and style.

Thewithesarehere · 03/01/2021 17:15

I don’t know if anyone noticed this or not, but the sex scenes were so much more balanced. There was no full frontal and there were scenes where even the most intimate scenes didn’t show her boobs and it made me quite happy.
She said in an interview somewhere that there was an intimacy coordinator to work on the sex scenes to ensure it worked for both sides well. It’s about time we show less nude women with the sole aim of luring viewers.

thevassal · 03/01/2021 17:48

@FrostedCranberries

It was excellent bar the sex scenes. I just dont think people like seeing ethnic minorities in costume drama, especially when they play roles of gentry. It's as if brown and yellow people should be serving the whites.
What? None of OPs valid points (all of which I agree with) mentioned the casting at all, let alone the race aspect. Some people might have disliked that element but that doesn't mean that you can assume that's the sole reason someone might have for disliking something.

Also your sentence should have read "I thought it was excellent..." your personal opinion isn't objective fact.

I thought it was awful, and, worse than being unrealistic (again, the dialogue and plot far more so than the characters' race), for something billed as a modern/sexed up Jane Austen, it was just boring!

Stoic123 · 03/01/2021 17:59

It was complete and utter rubbish. I enjoyed it very much.

sunlight81 · 03/01/2021 18:10

It was that bad it was good! Easy watching with beautiful Men and Women. The sex was refreshingly unbiased and I certainly enjoyed seeing the dukes bare ass more than once!

Didyousaynutella · 03/01/2021 18:24

Oh the duke! He certainly knows how to smoulder. In fact most of the males were totty. Definitely aimed at women!

CrapDogOwner · 03/01/2021 18:29

I watched it absolutely transfixed by the sheer awfulness of the dialogue - in places it was like a parody. I genuinely couldn't tell whether the writers were taking the piss or not. Loved it in a "so bad it's good" sort of way.

SparkleAllTheWay · 03/01/2021 18:38

I’m bingeing and currently on episode 6.
It’s utter trash, with stupid storylines, hammy acting and completely historically inaccurate...but it’s SO watchable and Simon is SO HOT. I’m bloody loving it! Grin. Great ‘January blues’ buster.

altiara · 03/01/2021 18:48

I signed up to Netflix just to watch it!
I have read all the books before (a long time ago) so at least I knew what I was going to watch.
I did love the duke of Hastings 😍 but didn’t like the sex scenes.

Mummadeeze · 03/01/2021 18:56

Once I stopped comparing it to BBC period dramas and stopped chastising some of the actors for not being posh enough in my head I also loved it. It really was just the tonic over Christmas and New Year. And I enjoyed all the sex scenes as the men were all so attractive. Very entertaining.
