Much better than Hinch grey!

OP posts:

I’m not a fan of white or grey, DH is so had to have a bit of a compromise, but for me it’s colours all the way. Most rooms in the house that I’ve decorated I pick a colour and build the room around that, I’ve got red, green, orange, purple etc. It’s definitely not too everyone’s tastes but I love it.

Janegrey333 · 02/01/2021 21:00

@StillCoughingandLaughing

People are queuing up at the moment to say how much they hate grey decor. Being desperate to prove you don’t follow trends has become a trend in itself.
I think that’s unfair. If you stop to think about it, no wonder people are saying that they hate the grey gloom and the sheeple attitude that led to it. Incidentally, I never follow decorating trends but I certainly find the drab grey too many people accept, utterly lacking in taste.
SwimmingOnEggshells · 02/01/2021 21:09

@Janegrey333 hear hear! Ironic name for a disliker of grey Grin

BumbleBeegu · 02/01/2021 21:10

I love 'white with a splash'...of whatever colour you've chosen to off-set the white 🤷‍♀️

All my walls and woodwork are white, which I love, but each room has a splash colour, which softens the starkness of the white. So my living room has a pale, duck egg blue...sofas, curtains, cushions etc, very relaxing! Bedroom is a soft, pale lemon with lots of plants on wooden shelving (looks nicer than I've described 😂)

So, white with a splash...it's the future 😂

megletthesecond · 02/01/2021 21:15

Yanbu. My house is all white. Lots of warm wood and greens.
It is quite Scandi.
I don't have the money to worry about what matches what. Everything matches white.

lioncitygirl · 02/01/2021 21:17

Bit too much like the inside of a hospital for me.

TramaDollface · 02/01/2021 21:18

My house looks like the seventies threw up all over it, and I love it.

When I go dog walks and spy on other people I cannot believe how many live in a fug of greige blandness

NiceGerbil · 02/01/2021 22:04

Love 70s 😀

VestaTilley · 02/01/2021 22:16

YABU. Both are awful and show a total lack of imagination Grin

PickAChew · 02/01/2021 22:19

Only better when it's fresh. Headache inducing in a South facing room with big windows. I prefer colour or off white.

You're right, it's so fucking tedious. Can't people just decorate how they like without validation from others
Bluntness100 · 02/01/2021 22:37

To be honest, I think grey done well can look fantastic, elegant and warm. However the issue is some folks over do it, snd they do it cheaply so they use cold hard greys, and they put it everywhere, which has caused a lot of folks to go off it.

I’m sure I saw a post from mrs hinch awhile ago that she was looking at colour cards, so I think she’s looking at redecorating. I think her home has lovely elements but it’s a bit “next at home” for me. Too much the same.

As said, I’m not a fan of all white, or all grey, but I have many shades of green, interspersed with some funky wallpaper. I love it, and as long as my family do too, that’s all that matters.

I’ve a friend who loves colour, she’s got pea green, raspberry pink, bright blue rooms, it’s not for me, although I actually really like the raspberry room, we all have different tastes. I’ve another friend who paints everything mushroom and loves a dark brown sofa. All our homes are different, it’s about what you love, not what’s “fashionable”.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/01/2021 22:38

Loath white and grey decor. Every room in this house is different, and that's how I like it.

mrjuno · 02/01/2021 22:40

You decorate your house however you like, OP.

I personally have a horror of 'accent colours', 'feature walls' and anything along those lines - but each to their own.

My house would be horrific to an awful lot of people (nothing matches anything, furniture was all inherited, clutter everywhere), but it's my house and I like it.

TornadoOfSouls · 02/01/2021 22:45

Yes, exactly right.

cyclingmad · 02/01/2021 22:52

I quite like grey its quite a neutral colour, my master room has one wall in grey rest if off white with grey throw white bedding and blush pink in a throw and some art work...looks veery great

My second room has light grey walls with white bedding and navy accents in accessories

And my last room is a walk in dressing room which has lovely blue pink on the wall and grey accessories in chair, art work

So the rooms upstairs all tie in together but yet still have their own unique look

I think this shows how everyone is different. I prefer a house to flow.

The only think that I “loathe” is clutter. Although I find loathe too strong a word. I just feel uncomfortable with too much clutter. Every room in my house is different, but it’s, as said, shades of green with some funky, beautiful (in my view and very expensive) wallpaper. Some folks would hate it and that’s ok.

spidermomma · 02/01/2021 23:09

I'm sick of white. Feel like I walk into heaven every time I open my pissing doors or eyes for that matter
Everything is white from my white walls, wooden blinds, white marble floors, white doors, white stair case that's glass with may I add WHITE WALLS behind. I HATE IT
Slowly started to add colour , glitter pink wall and bedding in bedroom, red and blue spiderman wall in ds1 room , Disney princess wall in dd room, blue / grey stars in ds3 room to break it up
Just purchased all navy accessories for my livingroom and waiting for my back wall to be plastered then doing that navy with the large squares on!
Then added plants into the kitchen and on window cils in random areas to !
Still looks like mrs hinch but with colour and not a filter :)!!!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/01/2021 23:09

Oooh, you'd hate my house then, @Bluntness100, it's full of clutter! I get uneasy in houses without it. Scared if I sit still for too long, I'll be tidied up.

I'm sure your house is gorgeous, and I adore green - two thirds of mine is in shades of green - but I'm too naturally chaotic to have "flowers Smile

wewillmeetagain · 02/01/2021 23:10

A completely White House always makes me think of mental hospitals, don't ask me why Blush

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/01/2021 23:10

"Flows" nor flowers, thanks autocorrect!

Oh but you sound lovely, so I’m not sure id hate it, but if it was very cluttered yes, I’d be uncomfortable, but that’s my issue. Not yours..😃

I too like white walls and ceilings. Off-white, really. I'm definitely not going for the Scandinavian look. I just like being able to choose a variety of pictures and pottery and general knickknacks and not worry about whether they go with what I've already got. My mum called my previous house The Hospital, but she is at the opposite extreme - matching curtains, wallpaper, rugs, which means choosing bedding and pictures is a fraught business.

I love the deep blue and green tones that are popular now, but my partner vetoed this when we recently decorated and I also fear they'll look old hat in a few years' time. So off-white it is.

Grey? Can look great, but Bluntness is right. Too much bad grey has lessened its appeal. Pet hate is the exterior of buildings being slapped with grey paint. I'm seeing a lot of chain pubs and the like covered in battleship grey. Living in the northwest, where the sky is generally a depressing shade of grey, I consider it a form of visual pollution!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/01/2021 23:15

Like white when it’s fresh clean and not marked/faded etc.

Dislike the grey trend, be it internal or external. I always think it’s more business interior than a home personally.

There is a house near me, it’s a beautiful, large, old, semi detached house, and they have painted the brick work in a sort of pale but steel grey, battle ship grey as you describe, it’s actually horrible, I won’t lie. I have no idea why they did it.

The thing though about painting internally, is if you’re handy with a paint brush you can change a room in a weekend, and for less than fifty quid, so nothing has to be long term.
