To warn you about Sainsburys own brand baked beans

Posting here for traffic, mainly.

A few days ago, we opened a tin of Sainsburys beans and DH (luckily) noticed that they smelled really odd. If I had to describe it, I would say that they smelled like manure. The tin also smelled very metallic (we did smell another tin for comparison) and was badly discoloured.

DH notified Sainsburys and sent them a picture, and they couldn't have been less bothered. Hmm No follow up questions, no request to see the tin/contents, no product recall.

Yesterday we tried another tin, and it was the same. Horrible smell and blackened/discoloured tin. I ate a couple of beans before I realised Envy and had a nasty metallic taste in my mouth for several hours afterwards (now gone, so definitely not COVID).

I'm going to return the remaining tins in person today, but it feels like the sort of thing people should really be aware of, as you don't really tend to do the sniff test with beans and I can imagine someone ending up quite ill from these. Hopefully it's a one-off, but if you buy Sainsburys beans, smell them first and check the tin!

Yes! I have had this multiple times. Ate them anyway but won’t be buying again.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2021 10:00

Do beans have batch numbers on the tins?

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 02/01/2021 10:00

We had this about six weeks ago with a tin of 'Stockwell' baked beans (Tesco cheap brand). We put it down as a rogue tin and threw them away.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/01/2021 10:02

@SoupDragon

Do beans have batch numbers on the tins?
Not sure - I guess so. Hold on, will see if I can recover the second tin!

SoupDragon · 02/01/2021 10:06

I've never had it

bloodyhairy · 02/01/2021 10:07

Not relevant, but Sainsbury's own brand mayonnaise is the worst thing I have ever tasted.

We buy the sainsburys low salt small tins for the kids and not had any issues. Could it be a specific batch? Have you contacted them?

TidyDancer · 02/01/2021 10:09

I buy these (the reduced salt/sugar version anyway) and never had an issue. They are actually nicer than the Heinz ones. Hopefully you just had a bad batch, but I imagine it's possible regardless of the shop or brand.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/01/2021 10:09

@bloodyhairy thanks - another one to avoid then!

I think you need to return the affected tins and contents to them.

pelosi · 02/01/2021 10:11

Thanks for the warning. I had something similar with Marks and Spencer, their cheese and onion sandwich was full of green mould inside throughout. I took it right back, filled in complaint form and never heard back!

Not sure what made me open up the sandwich to check but I do it every time now.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/01/2021 10:12

Up till now it's been fine, and it could well be bad luck. Think I'll have to change brands anyway as eating beans is supposed to be relaxing. Grin

Don't fill in complaints - tweet them! They're shamed in to replying. I always have success that way

Lisibeth81 · 02/01/2021 10:14

I bought some own brand mushrooms from there which turned out to be mostly stalks.

We would have if they'd asked. Too late unfortunately, but I imagine they'd just have binned them anyway as they really didn't seem interested!

Goodness, yes, it's horrible isn't it? The texture is off as well as the taste.

It has to be full fat Helman's for me.

This. I have found it's the only way to get anything done with big companies this year.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/01/2021 10:30

Definitely feels like they've gone downhill of late. Also (since we're airing grudges) they've stopped using free range eggs in a lot of their own brand/Taste the Difference stuff, and very little of their stuff is Fair Trade any more. Sad

All supermarket own brand beans will be made in the same factory and then labelled as tesco, Sainsburys, morissons etc.

I've had this tins of tuna before.

GameSetMatch · 02/01/2021 11:34

I bought three tins on pears from Sainsbury’s and inside each tin was mandarin segments.

I bought beans from Aldi before Christmas - normally have Heinz, don't eat them that often and couldn't remember if I had any. They tasted OK, but the volume of gloop to beans was way higher than with Heinz.

Pyewhacket · 02/01/2021 12:20

Bad batch, throw them away, they're only 35p a tin.

Callipygion · 02/01/2021 12:29

I had a tin of cat food once that was absolutely rank. The outside of it showed no damage or anything odd so I don’t know why it was off. It made me heave it was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever smelt and made the house stink for a few days. I packaged the thing up, sealed it, and posted it back to them to complain - I thought they should appreciate exactly the same experience they gave me! I think they sent me some money off vouchers.
