To warn you about Sainsburys own brand baked beans

Posting here for traffic, mainly.

A few days ago, we opened a tin of Sainsburys beans and DH (luckily) noticed that they smelled really odd. If I had to describe it, I would say that they smelled like manure. The tin also smelled very metallic (we did smell another tin for comparison) and was badly discoloured.

DH notified Sainsburys and sent them a picture, and they couldn't have been less bothered. Hmm No follow up questions, no request to see the tin/contents, no product recall.

Yesterday we tried another tin, and it was the same. Horrible smell and blackened/discoloured tin. I ate a couple of beans before I realised Envy and had a nasty metallic taste in my mouth for several hours afterwards (now gone, so definitely not COVID).

I'm going to return the remaining tins in person today, but it feels like the sort of thing people should really be aware of, as you don't really tend to do the sniff test with beans and I can imagine someone ending up quite ill from these. Hopefully it's a one-off, but if you buy Sainsburys beans, smell them first and check the tin!

Thank you for making me feel less smug about only having Heinz baked beans!

Not Sainsbury's beans but...🤢

Pre-Covid, I let Sainsburys know several times about rotten/gone off food. They weren't interested in the least. Our local (in London) is filthy and you can sometimes even smell the off food. I don't shop there anymore.

farawayplanet · 02/01/2021 12:58

Sainsburys is going right downhill.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/01/2021 13:03

Swapped them for Heinz! I know they're only cheap, but it's the principal of the thing. Once again woman who did the exchange wasn't bothered - wouldn't be surprised if they went straight back on the shelves Hmm

Sainsburys customer service is very poor imo, although the staff are lovely in our branch woe betide you if you need to contact head office.

Basically the opposite of lidl- horrible surly teenagers on the checkouts but the company couldn't do more for you.

Is that the magic password that will make Sainsburys get their shit together?

Dreahil1 · 02/01/2021 15:05

@KimchiLaLa

Don't fill in complaints - tweet them! They're shamed in to replying. I always have success that way
I was thinking the same

I once bought some Cafe Direct tea bags where the perforations were askew and lots of the bags were leaking tea leaves. I wrote to them and provided the batch number, they did a full investigation at the manufacturing site and found there had been an issue on the production line - I was amazed they went to such an effort - but that's how to respond to a customer complaint!

Northernsoullover · 02/01/2021 15:16

I always buy Sainsbury's beans and have never had a problem. You have undoubtedly had a bad batch. I won't stop buying them based on your 'warning' but might if the next can are iffy.

onelittleclara · 02/01/2021 15:35

We get through several tins of the low salt/sugar ones a week and have never had this. I reckon dodgy batches. Definitely twitter. Much prefer to Heinz btw.
