Am I unreasonable to ask if there have been theories about why Harry/Meghan called their child Archie?

I am a republican and don't follow royal reporting except when it hits me in the face (yes, that's you, Sky News).

I would be grateful if people could fill in my obvious ignorance about why he might have been named Archie? Obviously unless you're a sacked nanny, you're unlikely to know for sure, but there have probably been guesses by columnists which MNers might have read.

....because they liked the name?

FoxyTheFox · 01/01/2021 22:28

Because they like the name.

HTH.

Lockheart · 01/01/2021 22:29

No you're not unreasonable to ask.

ARudeTerriblePerson · 01/01/2021 22:30

Thanks....encouraging!

Well it's a daft question. Why does there need to be a special reason, other than just liking it? 🤷‍♀️

NeonSparkle · 01/01/2021 22:37

What a bizarre question...

EagleFlight · 01/01/2021 22:40

Probably because it’s a normal and reasonably popular name, and due to being so far down the line of succession he didn’t need to have a fairly typical royal family name (like George or Charlotte).

Harrison I think was Harry’s ego.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/01/2021 22:41

It might help if you made the point of your question a little less obscure? I mean - why shouldn’t they name him Archie?

YouBoughtMeAWall · 01/01/2021 22:42

Why would there be a theory? Confused

palmstar · 01/01/2021 22:43

I seem to remember he was named after an army colleague of Harry's. Although liking the name is enough.

Lillyhatesjaz · 01/01/2021 22:45

Half the boys in my nursery are called Archie it's really popular. I have wondered if it stems from the tv show Monarch of the Glen

Theunamedcat · 01/01/2021 22:46

Harrison i feel was a two finger salute to the press and people who always said he was not Charles son

But im sure like all couples they argued discussed names together

Porcupineintherough · 01/01/2021 22:48

A theory? Could it not just be that they both liked the name?

nimbuscloud · 01/01/2021 22:50

🙄

ViciousJackdaw · 01/01/2021 22:52

My mate's hairdresser's brother's wife reckons it's a code and each letter of the name has a hidden meaning. She saw it on Facebook so it must be true.

Has anyone asked Gibbo of 'army WhatsApp group' fame?

Kanaloa · 01/01/2021 22:55

It’s a nice-ish name which they both probably liked? Same reason most people choose their kids names really.

My dog read the same version on his Facebook account, he told our cat and she said he's making this up. Maybe, just a possibility here Harry and his wife really liked the name. I'm not sure if this is true, neither of them posted on here and asked for opinions. What's a good nn for Archie? Archewell.
Plonque · 01/01/2021 22:58

I was surprised they used the name because of how common it is (common as in popular not common as in peasant!) Archies are ten a penny round here, I wouldn't give my child such an over used name, personally.
My first thought when they announced it was they had free rein to break stuffy traditions and they chose THAT? Confused

I remember reading a story about the time of the birth that he was named after Harry’s friend and ex commanding officer.
How true that maybe is anyone’s guess.

AliceMcK · 01/01/2021 23:04

Because it’s a nice popular name they both liked. A break from royal traditions which they both like. And Harrison, well because Harrison Ford is awesome!

But I’d bet Archie was/is an Archibald.
PodgeBod · 01/01/2021 23:07

I remember when they named him a lot of American parenting groups I was on found it quite surprising and unusual as "old man names" aren't as popular there. So maybe now they are based in the US it seems quite unusual and cool, vs the UK where its quite normal? Just a theory

spaceghetto · 01/01/2021 23:08

If you jumble up the letters, it forms "hair" and "ce." This sounds like "heresy", an action that shows you have no respect for the official opinion. I'm going to bed in the next 30 mins, so I still have time for more questions...
