To think tv is a letdown tonight

Given we're all stuck in surely they could have made a bit more effort to put something decent on tv.

We are fortunate enough to have Sky, Netflix and Prime... all rubbish. Some don't have the choice.

Surely they can do better

I think the tv has been bad all Christmas. We've really been scraping around for things to watch. There seemed to be huge numbers of Carry On films. Is there anyone who actually thinks they are funny these days??

BaublesAndBawbags · 31/12/2020 20:18

I'd have loved a run of 70s/80s game shows tonight. DSS (22) watched the Blankety Blank reboot with an expression of escalating bewilderment, before he finally broke down and said, 'Was this an actual television programme or is it a piss take?'

I dread to think what he'd have made of 3-2-1.

DeeDimer · 31/12/2020 20:19

We've got Ed Sheeran on and next it's Cold Play (Sky One). Nice and chilled.

rc22 · 31/12/2020 20:19

@TokyoSushi We watched the Ripper back to back on Boxing Day. DH wanted to watch it on Christmas day but I drew the line at that!!

We've watched Paddington tonight and have found Bridget Jones's Diary on Netflix. Agree nothing much on tonight.

Iwantacookie · 31/12/2020 20:20

I think tv has been shit all xmas. Especially since half the country has shut down.

Scarlettpixie · 31/12/2020 20:22

Watching the crystal maze and looking forward to the last leg.

Yes we were saying that to our dc

Generation Game and 321 would blow their mind

Imagine them seeing the conveyor belt Grin

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2020 20:24

We are watching Channel 5 with top 50 songs of the 80s as voted for by the public or something. They are only on number 43 though-Rick Astley.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 31/12/2020 20:26

We're watching the matrix on prime. One of my favourites!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/12/2020 20:29

I'm looking forward to Sandi Toksvig's Hygge on radio 4 - it's at 11.30, but the pre-Christmas ones are on catch-up if you didn't hear them.

First episode

TokyoSushi · 31/12/2020 20:30

Now we're watching Outbreak! Happy New Year! 😳🥳

Whathappenedtothelego · 31/12/2020 20:31

TV is always dire on NYE.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/12/2020 20:38

@Whathappenedtothelego

TV is always dire on NYE.
But you'd think they'd have made an effort given a far larger audience than normal.
BubblyBarbara · 31/12/2020 20:41

They could have out big fat quiz of the year on tonight but no it was on Boxing Day for some stupid reason. Oh and again on New Year’s Day!

sausageathlete · 31/12/2020 20:43

It's crap. They haven't even got rid of the dreadful Jools Holland annual nightmare.

Callipygion · 31/12/2020 20:50

We are waiting for Hot Fuzz, it is on at 9.

HermannlovesPauline · 31/12/2020 20:59

We bought a ticket to an online comedy show for this exact reason. They are banging on about fucking COVID a lot - seriously people are tuning in to forget coronavirus

PishFood · 31/12/2020 21:11

Very poor offerings, I am watching the crown but even finding that too depressing for NYE. Will probably watch the best of mock the week at 10:45 and go to bed.

justgeton · 31/12/2020 21:20

So many people have gone above and beyond this year to try and get us all through all the crap.

Sadly not the BBC. ITV, all of them. They've dished out the usual repeats and drivel.

They're even repeating things already on this Christmas... BBC 4 is showing The Sound Of Music. There is no excuse for this.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 31/12/2020 21:37

@YellowandGreenToBeSeen

The TV industry has been decimated by Corona. The vast majority of companies are staffed by (excluded) freelancers, advertising has hit the floor, budgets have been slashed (and programme making is even more costly as you need to have 2 times the contributors / crew in self isolation before filming in case someone gets sick), it takes time to make programmes and the country was in a formal lockdown when tv for Christmas would have been made. Telly people would love to be making better telly.
OP There is an ‘excuse’.

See my earlier post.

justgeton · 31/12/2020 21:44

That's no excuse.

There's no excuse for repeating repeats. There's no variety. No attempt to cater for various tastes. It smacks of knock up a schedule using the same old stuff and then blame a pandemic

Pathetic

Ok then. Not going to argue with you (despite having over 20 years experience at the TV coalface). You know best.

Ps. I’ve been one of the lucky ones and had work this year. I’d say 80% of my colleagues have been unemployed since March and you can’t make telly without the crew. Please don’t call us pathetic. Colleagues have lost their houses, savings, income. Have some compassion.

DressingGownofDoom · 31/12/2020 21:50

DH always makes me watch this, ten bloody years of wanting to blow my brains out on NYE thanks to jools fucking Holland.
sausageathlete · 31/12/2020 21:51

Death to 2020 and then the Last Leg here.

Hugh Grant looks more like Griff Rhys Jones!

I haven't asked for new stuff. I've asked for some thought in the scheduling. The archives must be stuffed to the gills with stuff.

Instead we get the same old stuff wheeled out.

That's what's pathetic.
