A UK resident has decided to declare that he has always considered himself to be French because his mother is French and is applying for French citizenship and feels that he will always be a European.

The lucky individual? Stanley Johnson.

Can we encourage his son to seek active Russian or US citizenship?

Same Stanley Johnson who was caught in a shop without a mask, and popping to Greece without quarantining - arrogant prat who is only out for himself so why worry about it.

Sobeyondthehills · 31/12/2020 19:34

Its when Farage gets his German passport you should save your outrage for not, for someone who campaigned for remain.

And I feel dirty for defending him tbh

MaryLeeOnHigh · 31/12/2020 19:36

@BubblyBarbara

Disgusting lack of respect shown from a father to a son especially with the timing. I’d never vote for Stanley Johnson if he acts that way
He’s not standing for election
vanillandhoney · 31/12/2020 19:36

I mean, I don't like him, but why is it a problem? He campaigned for "Remain" and if he's eligible to claim citizenship elsewhere, why on earth shouldn't he?

jessstan1 · 31/12/2020 19:38

Good for him. He is a Remainer. Well it's a bit late now to be a Remainer but he is making a point. I mean, let's face it, he doesn't have to move to France, he will not face hardship living here, he's a successful writer. However I think it is good that he has come out with this.

I've known a few people who have claimed Irish citizenship because of some relative or other who was Irish. Thinking about it, I could do that too but can't be bothered, I'm OK here and will continue to be.

CharlotteRose90 · 31/12/2020 19:40

This country got smashed to shreds the minute people voted leave. I’m not surprised he’s getting an EU passport and he is entitled to one thanks to his mother.

My mother is European and I’ve applied for mine. I’m actually ashamed to be a British citizen now thanks to how this country has turned out.

VinylDetective · 31/12/2020 19:40

If I was entitled to an EU passport I’d have one in a heartbeat. The bloke’s got an Irish one. Quite honestly I’m deeply envious.

TonTonMacoute · 31/12/2020 19:41

Good luck to him. It's incredibly difficult to be granted French citizenship, I know several people who have tried and failed, including people who are married to French citizens.

However they might just grant it to him to piss off Boris

Maybe Dominic Raab will be able to get an EU passport too? His father was from what is now called Czechia. I wouldn't be surprised if most Brexiters had a second passport to be honest, I certainly feel like the only person in the UK without one sometimes.

akerman · 31/12/2020 19:45

I posted in anger about this today on FB, but remembered he was a Remainers, so deleted the post.
He’s still a miserable shit for flouting lockdown rules the way he has, though.
And I do hope this doesn’t enable Boris Johnson to claim EU citizenship. Mind you BJ is rich enough to be able to buy it for himself.

AcornAutumn · 31/12/2020 19:46

@Shamoo

To be fair to him, he did campaign for remain. He can’t be blamed for his son’s actions. (I am not a fan..)
Yes, I don't think we can blame father or son for the actions of either.
MimiDaisy11 · 31/12/2020 19:47

I'm not a fan of either father or son - his sister and brother seem alright. Sure you could argue that it makes his son look bad but his son is in his 50s he shouldn't need his father to back him. I'm jealous of those who can get EU passports. I have Irish relatives on both sides but it's a bit further back than grandparents so I'm not eligible.

TheRealBoswell · 31/12/2020 19:47

I don’t blame Stanley Johnson from gaining a French passport as he shouldn’t held accountable for his son’s actions. But what does this mean for Boris? Does that mean that he too is eligible to apply for a French passport if his father gets one?

BlueThistles · 31/12/2020 19:49

@sausageathlete

it's about as much respect as the PM has shown to the rest of the country.
so this was your real agenda in posting Hmm
Xerochrysum · 31/12/2020 19:51

I see no problem with it at all. I am foreign, and my son can have my nationality if he choose to, though he never lived there.

Fuckingcrustybread · 31/12/2020 19:53

Well said!
TooTrueToBeGood · 31/12/2020 19:55

He's gone up in my estimation, though that wouldn't be hard as he seems to be as much a buffoon as Boris is. This can be interpreted as the father publicly stating that he wholly disagrees with the actions of the son. A big FU to Boris from daddy dearest.

Cam77 · 31/12/2020 19:56

Funny though isn’t it. Farage will be waltzing through EU/EEA passport control with his German wife and kids next time they pop over the channel, while 60 million Brits will be stuck for a good 1-2 hours behind the US/Korean/Chinese tour groups and foreign students etc. Hilarious.

Cam77 · 31/12/2020 20:01

There are millions of Brits who have no idea how frustrating it is queuing for two hours at the end of a long trip before you can get in a taxi to take you to your accommodation. I think many people just take relatively speedy passport control for granted - they are in for a hell of a shock at many EU destinations!

Carolofthebellies · 31/12/2020 20:05

Both remainers and brexiteers do it not just remainers.

rwalker · 31/12/2020 20:10

The only thing unreasonable with this is why people have so much interest in it,

His mother was french and he can so why not.

Another prime example of how over invested in other people business that have fuck all to do with us.

Why are you so ashamed ? Because we left the EU?
